It is easier to understand “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” by using the Psychoanalytic school of critic to analyze it. Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic theory actually helps with understanding why the Grinch hates christmas and why he behaves the way he does. Freud believed that our unconscious mind was influenced by childhood events. Freud believes that our personality is made of three things; the id, ego, and superego. The id is the unconscious part that has our needs, and instincts. The ego is the part that stays in touch with reality and tries to suppress the id and superego so they are socially acceptable. Finally the superego is the personality that completely cuts out the socially unacceptable instincts of the id. As you begin to read
The next perspective the Grinch demonstrates is humanistic. Being humanistic means you have the freedom to change your behavior. Following this concept, you could have something called unconditional positive regard which is a basic acceptance of someone no matter what they do or say. The Grinch gave a good example of this when he found it alright to raid Whoville and take everything they have; right after he did this he felt great about himself which demonstrates his strong unconditional positive regard for himself. Another concept he showed was his strong self-actualization which is the growth of an individual toward fulfilling higher needs. The Grinch showed this when he returned everything to Whoville and his heart grew three sizes
Heroes have fascinated the masses for years; this is displayed in comic books, movies, and myths that trail back farther than five thousand Before Common Era. The question that goes through all minds at some point, however, is what makes a hero? Joseph Campbell wrote his theory of "The Hero’s Journey" in which he describes the path the hero will tread and the trials and tribulations ahead of them. That is not to say that there are not multiple ways to go about a hero tale, there are various kinds of heroes, which all change the story. There are tragic heroes, classic heroes, epic heroes, and more. In the film The Nightmare Before Christmas, Jack Skellington fits Campbell’s archetype of the Hero’s Journey tragically, as he enters the
As a child the Grinch was didn’t fit in with the kids in his class because he was different than the rest. This makes his ID take over. He has an unconscious hatred. The unhappy childhood is the cause of his aggression. The Grinch builds his anger toward Christmas and everyone that is different from him because he is made fun of before his classmates during the Christmas season.
“The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason. It could be that his head wasn't screwed on quite right. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were to tight. But I think that the most likely reason of all May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.” (Seuss).
The grinch is a good example of how a person can turn good, but did bad decions in the past. The grinch returned all the presents christmas morning when he stole them all. He became a good person. He had a heart. The grinch is not quilty of the charges brought against him, nor does he have poor character.
At least once in our lives we were told the legendary “How the Grinch stole Christmas”, especially during a particular time of year. This prevalent poem teaches juveniles the importance of family and the insignificance of materiality during holiday seasons. He demonstrated this buy displaying the Who’s celebrating Christmas cheerfully “without any presents at all” (Seuss). However, with further research it is evident that this piece is inspired by Dr. Seuss himself.
Although a sociologist can look at Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch that Stole Christmas in all three of the major theoretical perspectives, the main one expressed is symbolic interactionism. The Grinch that Stole Christmas is a story about a “who” who was not considered to be part of their “whoville” society due to the fact that he not only looked different from the rest of the people, but he acted in different ways than their norms. The story is merely about how the Grinch hates the “whos,” because of how they treated him; until, a little girl named Cindy Lou Who gains a curiosity for the Grinch and wants to give him another chance to be a part of their society. Throughout the story both of the main characters develop a deep connection to each other. Upon viewing the story from a symbolic interaction perspective view, I discovered how the story thematically symbolizes an important part of Christmas by giving people another chance; meanwhile, focusing on the relationship between the main two characters help them regain faith, and while the setting symbolizes their society’s purpose.
The author of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, used symbolic interaction to describe the Grinch in the movie. Symbolic interaction is the behavior between one another that shows symbols and body language. The movie is about a Grinch who does not like Christmas. The Grinch believes that if he takes the present away from the whos in Whoville that he will ruin the special Christmas spirt that the whos have.
At the beginning of the movie the Grinch does what makes him “happy”, if you can call it that. He sits in his cave by himself, torments people and thinks of ways to ruin Christmas for the Whos. The part of his mind controlling him at the beginning is the id. He finds a sense of pleasure through these destructive things. At the beginning of the movie we have not yet been shown the Grinch’s superego, or ego. This is all a part of his unconscious that

With the season, sounding the holiday spirit, the movie that I have chosen to analyze a character that depict a personality disorder and, “enduring patterns of experience and behavior that differ greatly from the norm and the expectations of the individual’s social group”, is Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The character’s behavior that I will be examining is the Grinch and the personality disorder that he acquires to exhibit is anti-social personality disorder. Anti-social personality disorder is one of the four disorders consider appearing dramatic, emotional, and unpredictable. As a person with anti-social personality disorder they tend to not care about other people’s feeling showing little remorse, along with aggressive behaviors. Generally, individuals start showing signs of this disorder early on in childhood as early as six years old, and include symptoms of impulsivity, behavioral problems, callous social attitudes, and lack of feeling for others. Antisocial personality disorder implies that the person does not conform to social norms and tend to little or no respect for the law.
As the story moves along Sam out the elder in different situations to see if he would eat the green eggs and ham, but to Sam’s dismay the elder wouldn’t. Finally after trying and trying and trying Sam gets the elder to try the Green eggs and ham. One of the most popular stories by Dr. Seuss is the classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This story became so popular that Universal Studios not only picket it up for a movie, but also a whole theme for their Christmas season theme park. In this story the Grinch loathes Christmas and the who’s with every fiber of his being. The Grinch presents himself as socially cut off from the who’s down in whoville. He lives on top of Mt. Crumpit with his dog Max. All of this hate is because his heart is two sizes too small (and this time he’ll keep it off). He finally had enough of the Who’s bangboozaling and clangclangaling so he devised a plan to steal Christmas. After Santa Clause came and delivered all the presents to the houses he would sneak in, in his Santa Clause suit and steal every present, every light, every decoration, every tree, and all of the food for the feast. He even stole the roast beast! He would empty the houses one by one and he didn’t leave anything. Not even a crumb big enough for a mouse. So as he got done with emptying the houses and was about to dump everything over Crumpit he heard a noise, a weird

Charles Dickens began writing the famous story “A Christmas Carol” in October 1843 and wrote excitedly during the next six weeks. He completed the narrative at the end of November so that it could be published by the time it was Christmas. It came out on December 17, 1843 and sold out in only three days (Molly Oldfield). The expression “Bah! Humbug”, a line repeated many times in the story by its main character, a miserable and bitter fellow by the name of Ebenezer Scrooge, has become a well-known phrase even today. The story takes place in and around the city of London and begins on Christmas Eve, continues through Christmas Day, and ends the morning after Christmas in 1843. At the beginning of the story, Scrooge hates Christmas and happiness and was very greedy. Then a trio of spirits, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future (who was also known as the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come), haunts him and shows him the wrongfulness of his doings. The theme of this Christmas story is compassion and forgiveness. It shows that a person’s life will be empty, lonely, and sad if he or she does not care about others. It also shows what happens when people are unforgiving towards each other. Relationships are broken when people do not forgive each other. The story, “A Christmas Carol”, has been made into a play and a movie with some similarities and differences in the roles of the characters, conflict, climax, and resolution between the two mediums.
Scrooge! He is a whale of a grouchy person who despises Christmas. Based on the passage, it says “Does not need to spend an extra cent on anything! Therefore, this show’s he is indeed omnivorous and astringent. Another sentence from the text show’s “If Scrooge sees anyone singing a Christmas carol he will whack them in the face as forceful as he can” this also shows he is tight fisted and harsh. People around him sees him as an isolated, harsh, selfish scarce and greedy character. The text started with his best acquaintance Marley was dead on Christmas eve. Marley was not just a friend, but a business partner. Since his partner died near Christmas, time, Scrooge is even extra irrational during Christmas time. Scrooge’s biggest catchphrase is BAH HUMBUG! Furthermore, this, is one text evidence on why Scrooge hates Christmas! All of this confirmation sites on why Scrooge is a grouchy, harsh, omnivorous, selfish and hates Christmas!
