You do anything long enough to escape the habit of living until the escape becomes the habit.” This quote by David Ryan shows the level of addiction in some addicts (Ryan 1) Addiction is a serious disease that is incurable in most people, and the numbers of people who are addicts is growing worldwide. An addiction is being abnormally tolerant to and dependent on something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, addictions range from a wide variety of things such as drugs, alcohol, and food addictions. Heroin a drug that is injected into your body, used because they relieve pain. Heroin use has effects on the body such as dizziness and euphoria, and have long term effects such as mental confusion, have hallucinations, and even have slight mood swings (padui.org 4-7). Some people also use legal drugs in illegal ways, this would include over the counter prescriptions, alcoholic beverages, even nicotine. Doctors will prescribe medicine to a patient and the patients body becomes dependent on it there fore making them unable to live without it. A person never thinks of alcohol or nicotine as an addictive substance, but once your body becomes dependent on something you are classified as addicted. (padui.org 5) An addiction has three stages, early stage addiction, middle stage addiction, and chronic stage addiction. During the early stage of an addiction you start to have an increase in your dependence and tolerance of the drug, the person will start to use the drug so much that they start to depend on them, the life they life with the drug become normal and life without the drug becomes abnormal (padui.org 11). The middle stage of an addiction is classified by losing control of you and damages the liver. In this stage a person has to use more drugs than they ever have before to get the feeling of being high, also the drug is now relieving pain created by the lack of use.
