In order to become a registered nurse, nursing students must learn the core concepts of professionalism that they must follow in their future nursing careers. According to Finkelman and Kenner (2016), “Today, nursing is an applied science, a practice profession. To appreciate the relevance of this statement requires an understanding of professionalism and how it applies to nursing. Nursing is more than just a job; it is a professional career requiring commitment” (p. 17). This paper will discuss the following topics: The Health Care Delivery system, Professionalism, Health Ethics, Teamwork and Collaboration, and Health Law; and how they relate to the case study, as they are critical aspects of the nursing profession and its very important to understand and apply them in my future practice. In todays’ health care delivery system, nurses are the ones who spend the majority of their time with the patient. The American Nurses Association defines professional nursing as “the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations (Epstein & Turner, 2016). Similar to the case study, all nurses should act as advocates for their patients and report any concerns they have to their supervisors, physicians or the department who can help solve the situation.
