The current healthcare system (i.e traditional hospital settings) will not sufficiently meet the needs of the growing senior population, and advances in technology can allow this population to be treated more effectively in the comfort of their own homes.
Technology has had a huge impact on health care in general. From lifesaving medical equipment and new methods of developing pharmaceuticals, to medical filing systems and new developments like minimally invasive procedures that actually cut back on overall health care spending. This paper will specifically focus on the benefits and drawbacks of the home healthcare industry and the impact of technology. It also happens to be more convenient and less expensive, yet it often meets or exceeds the standards of nursing homes, assisted living homes, or hospital care (Medicare.gov, n.d.). Some of the services provided by home healthcare are: Treatment for long term chronic illnesses, hospice, patient education, Intravenous treatment, and many more. Because home healthcare takes a more personalized approach to patient care, they increase patient awareness, education and thus safety, leading to fewer emergency room visits and increasing their overall health. Cutting down on time spent in hospitals leads to better patient disposition and thus longevity, especially since the elderly are at a much higher risk of developing infections and contracting diseases in hospital settings (Friedlander, 2015, para. 9). Technology is playing a huge role in making home health care successful. The introduction of affordable home healthcare technology such as electronic health records, mobile health devices and alarm integration tools are allowing the elderly to remain in the comfort of their home, while still receiving the care they need (Halvorson, 2013).
