American ideals about diets and body images are constantly changing. It seems as though we are always searching for a “perfect” food, one which will keep us slim while providing the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients necessary for survival. In recent years, the focus has shifted from concerns about fat and carbohydrates to overall health and wellbeing. There has been an increasing emphasis placed on ‘organic’ foods – foods grown without pesticides, chemicals, and inorganic fertilizers. Cancer has become a huge concern, as it is being linked to many of the chemicals and pesticides used in food production. Not all varieties offer the same benefits, however. Farmed salmon, while often easier to obtain, is the less healthy choice. While they are being raised, farmed salmon are fed a combination of fish protein, antibiotics, pesticides, vaccines, chemicals, and other drugs. These present a risk not only to wild salmon living near the farms, but to humans and the environment as well. Farmed salmon contain more of the ‘bad’ fats than wild salmon, and fewer ‘good’ fats. Wild salmon, while often more difficult to locate than farmed, are the healthier choice and the one preferred by the majority of chefs and consumers throughout the country. The flesh is darker in color and firmer, direct results of an active, migratory lifestyle. Wild salmon are ‘harvested’ only after their feeding and spawning cycles have concluded, but despite this fact their species have become severely endangered.

Anyways it’s not like fast food fish sandwiches are required for us to survive. Also fish is wasted very frequently, it expires or is not eaten, so that is just harming our resources for no reason. People need to realize that fish is important, but could be used in a much smarter way. Many are reasonable and try not to be wasteful, but too many people are. Undoubtedly, if we continue this pattern of wastefulness with our ocean's resources there will be consequences. Many statistics and facts back this up. The rules and regulations we are putting on commercial fishing simply aren’t getting the job done. Our ocean’s fish population has declined so much in forty five years and the overfishing by commercial boats hasn’t gotten better, just worse. Salmon farming is damaging to local wildlife and for this reason it is crucial that it must be halted. Salmon farming is damaging to British Colombia’s economy and must be terminated. Salmon farming must stop as it poses a health risk to its consumers. Salmon farming in British Colombia must be brought to a complete stop immediately.
Many pet owners feel the need to supplement their dogs’ diet as new information about commercial dog food becomes available to the public. A number of commercial dog foods that have been advertised as healthy and beneficial for dogs are now receiving scrutiny over the actual contents of their foods. When these claims are paired with an aging dog with arthritis or another pain inducing disease it seems obvious that dog owners would begin searching for a miracle supplement to make their aging dog healthier and more comfortable. Salmon oil is said to do both simultaneously. Although some research has supported the idea that adding salmon oil to a dog’s diet can be beneficial, the research is not substantial enough to conclude that salmon oil is indeed a miracle supplement.

For our groups visual communication strategy we chose to create a children's picture book. Our book will target elementary school children in the North Vancouver Area, specifically between the ages six to ten years of age. Our group would start by targeting one or two elementary schools in North Vancouver as they are located near the Capilano Salmon Hatchery. The location increases the relevance and connectivity of our specific topic to the kids and their parents. Our book will focus on communicating the negative impacts that both climate change and humans have on our local salmon population, through the primary use of illustrations and short “kid-friendly” dialogue. Our report will delve deeper into the science and details of the causes, impacts, vulnerabilities and possible solutions that both local people, and larger forces (ex.government, or NGO’S) can take in order to protect Vancouvers salmon stock.

The lifecycle of the New-Zealand chinook salmon is conventional to that of salmon in the North Pacific. chinook salmon (Otherwise known as quinnat or king salmon) mature in the ocean, they typically will reach sexual maturity at 3 years old, but this can vary anything between 2-7 years. (Females take longer than males.) Upon reaching sexual maturity, they will migrate upstream to spawn. Spawning usually occurs in autumn, immediately after all adults die, as the energy expenditure of the process is too significant to recover.

The effect of two different fish oil diets has been assessed in muscle pigmentation and on serum lipoproteins and cholesterol muscle deposition in rainbow trout. Twenty immature rainbow trout (300g) in duplicate were fed ad libitum during 8 days with diets containing 7% or 24% fish oil respectively. By increasing the amount of fish oil in the diet, a 30% increase in serum and a 23% in muscle cholesterol have been obtained.
