Set in Mississippi during the 1960s, Skeeter is a southern girl who returns from collage, who wants to become a writer and ends up deciding interviewing black woman who have spent their lives taking care of southern families to tell people how it really is, Aibileen, Skeeters best friends housekeeper, is the first to open up to her. Aibileen continues to tell her stories when more women come forward with their stories and they have a lot to say. In the book, Skeeter didn’t come up with the idea to write a book about how it was for a …show more content…
When Hilly goes to the Phelan house, to expose Skeeter to her mother, she is in shock by her weight loss and Mrs. Phelan mentions Hillys weight gain and says that her husband would never want to go home to an un presentable wife, she then offered to book a hair appointment for both her and Skeeter and there was never any confrontation between Hilly and Mrs. Phelan. In the movie when Hilly comes to the house she is in shock by her weight loss and Mrs. Phelan just commanded her to leave. I have never really liked how much they change the movies from the books, like the small things in the characters appearance or their personality in the
mean there are only small little things that are different in the book and movie.
To start off, the director did keep most of the characters looks and personalities the same in the movie as in the book. Some differences were that in the book Skeeter is big and tall, but the movie has her slender and average height, if not shorter. Hilly is portrayed in the book as a dark haired woman, whose weight increased throughout the timeline in the book, but in the movie, she is thin and stays that way through the whole movie. Also in the movie, Skeeter’s maid, Constantine, is shorter that Skeeter, although
The three girls working together begins to create the solution to the main conflict. The main conflict in this case is blacks are being treated in a way that is not fair. They are being treated as if they are disease carrying things. Skeeter wants to change that perspective on people. That’s why she wants to write a book on how black maids are treated in Mississippi. “I turn and hear Pascagoula’s knock on my door. That’s when the idea hit me. No. I couldn’t. That would be . . . crossing the line.” - (Page 104) This was foreshadowing what Skeeter would do next. It let the reader know what was going to happen. Minny and Aibileen are there to help Skeeter with her book. They are the interviews. At first, the book starts out with Aibileen doing a normal day of work. She notices the Skeeter isn’t like all the other ladies. She’s more polite. When Skeeter gets a job at the local newspaper she starts to go to Aibileen for help with the Miss Myrna articles. She is even willing to pay her to help her. “ ‘For your help,’ I say quietly, ‘ I’ve put away five dollars for every article. It’s up to thirty-five dollars now.’ ” (Page 126) This shows that Skeeter is quite
The actor choices from the film compare to what the book envisioned, but also contrast. The character of Daisy is not similar in the film to what the book
When watching the film, the first difference the viewer can see between the book and the movie is how the characters are portrayed. A notable example would be Carlson. In the film,
A few factors in the movie are altered from what was in the book. In the book, there is a
Skeeter reacts by saying saying, “maybe we should build you bathroom outside”. She later goes in the kitchen and says to abillens that she feels sorry for what she has to hear that. She believes that black people are not dirty and they don't carry diseases. She believes that everyone is the same, and skin color doesn't matter to determine if they are pure or not. Skeeters reaction to discrimination helped her make a change throughout her writing
Other large things that happen in both the book and the movie includes the pie incident between Hilly and Minny, Skeeter’s mother fighting off cancer, and the bond that is formed between Aibileen and the children she takes care of, (Stockett, 398, 434, 520). The conclusion of the story remains the same as well: the book becomes very popular, Miss Skeeter acquires a job in New York, and Aibileen gets fired from her job which coincidently actually leaves her feeling free, albeit sad. These similarities were important to show the theme of the
Skeeter tries to behave as a proper Southern lady: She plays bridge with the young married women; edits the newsletter for the Junior League; and endures her mother's constant advice on how to find a man and start a
The movie “The Help” was based In the early 1960’s in Jackson, Mississippi. During this period of time it was very segregated, very much so that whites did not want African Americans to have contact with them, but were expected to fully take care of their children from birth to adulthood. Most of the African American maids later developed a strong bond with the children that they looked after. They tried teaching the kids to see no color, just to later witness them grow up to be brainwashed by the world to think of African Americans as less than. Except for one southern girl named Skeeter Phelan, who saw the equality in everyone. And one day she decided to interview the maids to get their perspectives on life and to get their story out to the world. At first the maids were hesitant because it would be serious consequences if anyone knew who exactly spoke up, but Skeeter did whatever she could to make sure all the maids were anonymous and no one knew. She risked many hardships like losing her relationship with her boyfriend and also building tension with the women of the Junior League. Successfully the maids stories got out and it opened eyes little by little.
Although the movie and the book are very similar, there are noticeable differences that capture the audience's attention. If the reader was very attentive, they would notice that there is a willow tree outside of Skeeter’s house, but in the book this tree was not there. They might also notice that even though the main characters are the same, other characters are very different. For example, Charlotte Phelan, Skeeter’s mother, has a more positive attitude at the end of the movie, whereas in the book she remained hateful. One scene in particular, which demonstrates her changed attitude, is when Hilly shows up and Charlotte stands up for Skeeter. In the book, she just goes to bed. These slight changes are important because they make the viewer

When Skeeter approaches Aibileen to help by giving her some stories Skeeter is shot down instantly and is told by Aibileen “there is a reason no one has ever written anything like this before”. Skeeter is unaware of what could happen to her in Jackson if she publishes this book, she runs around looking for maids with no real understanding of what is at stake. She goes on to check the Mississippi laws realizing that it is more than just
