The Adolescent’s Journey
Many of the stories that have been told for centuries, or have recently been created, incorporate the story of a young innocent character who embarks on a journey and becomes a hero, known as The Hero’s Journey; a series of steps that all heroes follow. This journey not only shows the main character becoming a hero but also shows the hero move along a path similar to that of adolescence, the path between childhood and maturity. The Hero’s Journey was created by a man by the name of Joseph Campbell. He wrote a book called The Hero with One Thousand Faces, a novel containing a variety of stories that follow the steps of the Hero’s Journey. (Wilson, “Sigmund Freud and the oedipal complex”) Freud’s Oedipus complex is shown in George Lucas’s Star Wars trilogy through the relationship between Luke and his father, Darth Vader. Though it does have a strange twist to it; because Luke’s mother is deceased the one female left in his family is his sister Leia. According to Freudian beliefs, usually his subconscious sexual drive would be directed to his mother and would lead to him fearing his father, because he has a secret drive to steal his mother from him. But in Luke’s case his mother is dead and all of this focus is directed towards the last female left; Leia. In the film Luke is actually kissed by Leia, this incestuous encounter depicts a key aspect Freud’s Oedipus complex. Another part of Star Wars that follows along with this belief is the encounter between Luke and his father Darth Vader. This encounter would correlate directly to the step in the Hero’s Journey called the Supreme Ordeal where the hero encounters his final enemy and confronts death. This Freudian belief of the Oedipus Complex fits along the path of adolescence because of the battle between the father and the son.
