Colleges also helped popularize basketball. In 1893, in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania the first recorded college basketball game was between Geneva College and the New Brighton YMCA. Geneva College now feels they are the birthplace of college basketball. 1901 is when many colleges began having basketball seasons. Only few colleges like Yale, Minnesota, Dartmouth, Columbia, Chicago, Utah and Navy participated at first. In the early days of college basketball, most teams played less than 10 games, and some 15 or 16. That following year, the University of Minnesota would become the first undefeated team in basketball, by going 11 and 0. Early games always had problems with injuries. Fouling was in place, but there weren’t enough good refs back
In the essay “The Shame of College Sports,” Taylor Branch examines the flaws of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in college sports regarding “amateurism” (Branch 227) and the “student-athlete” (227). In doing so, Branch discusses the history of college sports and the National Collegiate Athletic Association while emphasizing certain regulations such as allowing multinational organizations to advertise their brand on athletic gear but athletes cannot use any of their memorabilia to get cash or a free tattoo at a tattoo parlor (227). Branch also argues that athletes are being manipulated for their skills and fame from the National Collegiate Athletic Association and universities and further irritates that they make money off the “unpaid
Q.)What was one factor discussed that occurred in both Empires? A.) Political Corruption, Desire for power "the generals became warlords or regional military strongmen; in Rome the praetorian guards handpicked or often the emperor himself picked his successor":
In The Cartel: Inside the Rise and Imminent fall of the NCAA, Taylor Branch is piecing together pieces of evidence and information about scandals that arose both the NCAA’s perspective as well as his own perspective to show contrast in the controversial findings within the NCAA concerning athletes and leadership. Throughout the entirety of the book, the picture that is being painted by Branch is that the NCAA as well as the institutions are reaping the benefits of intercollegiate athletics. While the "big men” are reaping the benefits of the skill and hard work of the college athletes. The information in Branch’s work not only presents the documents of scandals, but also presents his argument and proof for greed that is overtaking humanity, as well as athletics. The main focus is on the underlying theme of greed.
team was said to be one of the best in the entire NCAA men’s basketball. The Kentucky basketball could shoot the ball, they could pass the ball, and they could dribble the ball like no other team that year. If there was any year for a NCAA basketball team to go undefeated this was the team. They were the don't-even-try-to-beat-us-because-we-will-still-crush-you team of the league. Coach John Calipari was in his 6th year of coaching and was in his prime. That year they had Julius Randle as power forward and James Young as their small forward, both of these men would go on to be first round draft picks in 2014. This star team also had the returning twins Aaron
Everett and Odysseus are interchangeable. These two characters are alike in many ways. These two characters have the same goals, conflict, and journeys. The character Odysseus from “ The Odyssey” is comparable to the character Everett from “O Brother Where Art Thou?” because they have very similar personalities.
In the 1950s, America was viewed as one the strongest nations in the World. America established itself as a strong military super power and dominate country in World War II. The effects of World War II carried over in the 1950s, America saw a lot of economic growth, there was an increase in the amount of people who moved to the suburbs, and the baby boom which came about because of the millions of soldiers returning home from military services. Even though this seemed like a happy time, there was still a thick tension in America. This tension was between African-Americans and white Americans. In 1865, the thirteenth amendment was passed which abolished slavery. Even though this occurred, white people still felt that African-American were
Abstract: Collegiate athletes participating in the two revenue sports (football, men's basketball) sacrifice their time, education, and risk physical harm for their respected programs. The players are controlled by a governing body (NCAA) that dictates when they can show up to work, and when they cannot show up for work. They are restricted from making any substantial financial gains outside of their sports arena. These athletes receive no compensation for their efforts, while others prosper from their abilities. The athletes participating in the two revenue sports of college athletics, football and men's basketball should be compensated for their time, dedication, and work put forth in their respected sports.
College athletic programs are among the most popular sporting events in America. With this rise in popularity, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and its colleges have also seen a rise in revenue in recent years. In 2014, the NCAA made over 900 million dollars in revenue. Some collegiate coaches, such as Kentucky’s John Calipari, have yearly salaries in the millions, not counting incentives and endorsement deals. While, clearly, money is being made, NCAA regulations ban collegiate athletes from being paid. Many question this rule and argue that athletes at the college level earn and deserve pay for play. The debate to pay or not to pay college athletes rages on despite the latest court ruling supporting NCAA policies. Because colleges and universities earn such a profit from sporting events, many fans feel it is only fair to distribute some of the wealth to the players. Supporters of paying student athletes feel that these young men and women should be fairly compensated for the time demanded of the athletes and the stress put on the athletes, physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially. Those in favor of paying college athletes contend that athletic and academic work ethic at both high school and collegiate levels will improve, as well as, fiscal responsibility in these young adults. The NCAA argues that paying athletes would negatively affect their
While college basketball and professional basketball both are the exact same sport, they are completely different styles of game. Both have five players on the court at a time, with three referees and a coach. The point system is the same, which consists of one point, two points, or three points. Despite these similarities, they are very different. Between the effort of players, the officiating and style of a game, and the overall behavior of players and role media plays, watching or playing each of these two leagues results in very different outcomes.
A united university through sports is often a rarity. College football can be one of the most intense experience in college sports. The passion and energy is nearly impossible to encapsulate into a single feeling. Sports teams and their fans share a bond that cannot be recon with. The colleges with prestigious athletic backgrounds have a numerous alumni who carry pride into every game day. A lot of fans equal a lot of fun, but attending an school with diehard fans is best part of college sports. College football has gained the reputation for becoming the most celebrated sport. The best way to celebrate a college football game is tailgating. Tailgating and college football have become such a tradition that it is hard to see one happening
“You can’t always be the strongest or most talented person in the room, but you can be the most comparative.” This was a famous saying from basketball player, Pat Summitt. The early 1990’s was both a great and not so great time for women’s athletics. There were some very athletic women who didn’t get enough credit because they were judged by playing sports; it made them not “attractive.” The NBA approved the proposal to begin the WNBA in June 1997 (Valois). Many important things happened in the 90’s that made the WNBA what it is today.
There are a lot of arguments on which one is better. However a lot of these arguments are very vague. For my argument I think College basketball is more entertaining than NBA basketball. The reason why I think that is, is because every player has a chip on there shoulder to make it to the NBA. They are playing their hardest and giving it everything they have and more. For example, in this years College basketball season most teams had amazing records and some didn't. For example, UCLA before this season was a team that was so bad, with a record of 15-17 and this year they got 31-5 they jumped so far up. Also, there are a lot of great players competing which were in the playoffs this
The first game in the history of college football was played in New Brunswick, New Jersey on
The game of basketball started in December 1891. Basketball was founded by a Canadian born instructor named James Naismith at the Young Men’s Christian Association training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. The YMCA developed rules for the game which were later used in high schools, colleges, and settlement houses. The game grew bigger and popular in a lot of areas. Particularly in urban areas, where games were sponsored by schools, social clubs, churches, and companies. Colleges sponsored tournaments to attract players to their school. The best players around the world would attend these tournaments and invitational meetings in hope to earn scholarships or enter semipro leagues around American cities. Not only did men play the game of basketball but women, particularly in the south, received similar opportunities to play basketball for sponsored teams. Throughout the 20 centaury, basketball was a primary sport in inner-city playgrounds and urban recreational communities. College basketball was the main form of organized basketball beginning in the 1930s. The American basketball league began in the 1920s. As professional as the ABL was, it could not compete with college basketball. However the American basketball league changed the college basketball world. One of the main places basketball was played was at the Madison Square Garden. The first ABL elite program was the Boston Celtics. In the 1920s they won as much as 90 percent of their games. The game of basketball
It takes time to really learn the ins and outs of the game and also to get a good handle on things. The game of basketball started in Springfield Massachusetts and has now become on of the most popular sports nationally known. The game was designed
