In the early 1900s, Norman Saurage had two grocery stores in Baton Rouge. He started to experiment with various coffee blends in the stores. There was such a demand for his coffee from neighbors and friends that he purchased a converted barn for his coffee production.
Cap, as he was known to his friends and family, eventually left his grocery stores to focus on coffee production in 1924.Cap named his coffee Community Coffee because he worked alongside his family and served this special blend to people in his community. He knew it had to be the best tasting coffee around if he were serving it to people he loved.
Today, Community Coffee is still owned by a Saurage. It's been in the family for four generations and still operates out of Louisiana.
Starbucks Coffee originated in 1971 as a coffee and tea café opening in a small neighborhood of Seattle, Washington (Starbucks Corporation, 2010). Starbucks continued its service for Seattle residents for a decade when the new director of retail operations and marketing, Howard Shultz, decided to make some beneficial changes to the company. After two years of employment Howard Shultz decided to expand Starbucks outside of the Seattle area. In 1987 Starbucks was entering in the coffee market and the few numbers of Starbucks were now becoming a corporation (Starbucks Corporation, 2010). Fast forwarding to current times, Starbucks is
The company was first founded in Mobile, Alabama, in 1851 by Swedish Vice Consul Gustavus Adolphus George Westfeldt, who had immigrated to the U.S. in 1835. Westfeldt moved to New Orleans in 1853. By 1880, his company had become one of the country’s principal green coffee importers. Since then, it has been run by six generations of Westfeldts.
The “Coffee Wars – The Big Three: Starbucks, McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts” article focuses on the company analysis of the Starbucks brand and how its main competitors, McDonald’s and Dunkin Donuts, has affected their brand and driven competition higher. Even though there are many companies trying to enter the specialty coffee market, these three companies own the majority of the market share. With Starbucks’ top quality and above average prices they hold a different market than the fast coffee/food market of Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks; yet the competitive moves Dunkin’ Donuts has made over the years in order to compete with Starbucks and surpass McDonald’s has driven competition up between all three companies. The competition has stiffened ever more in the past ten years due to the changing economy. This led to “the big three” to come up with different techniques to gain competitive advantage over the other. Although the competition between these companies is to gain most of the market share, consumers are still loyal to a certain brand; this makes it difficult to gain each other’s clientele. McDonald’s continues to appeal to customers who want value and speed, Dunkin’ Donuts focuses on the middle-class, while Starbucks a customer who desires a higher quality product along with being recognized for using the brand.
A commodity is a raw material or primary agricultural product that can be bought and sold. The market treats it as equipment or nearly so with no regard to who produced it. The original producer does not make the “big” money from the good that has become a commodity demanded by consumers. A commodity’s supply and demand is part of one universal market like corn, or wheat. A stereo is something that would not be considered a commodity. Other things are important about a stereo not that it is just a stereo but what brand and quality is in consideration when purchasing a stereo. Demand for one type might be much larger than the demand for another. This is not the case with commodities; they lose differentiation across their supply base. An

Brewed coffee is the most widely consumed beverage in the world. The trade in coffee beans alone amounts to well over $6,000,000,000 a year and the total volume of beans traded exceeds 4,250,000 tons a year. Its believed that the beverage was introduced into Arabia in the fifteenth century A.D., probably by Ethiopians. By the middle or late sixteenth century, the Arabs had introduced the beverage to the Europeans, who at first resisted it because of its strong flavor and effect as a mild stimulant. The French, Italians and other Europeans incorporated coffee into their diets by the seventeenth century. The English, however, preferred tea, which they were then importing from India. Since, America was colonized primarily by the English Americans
Starbucks was originally a small waterfront coffee shop located in Seattle that opened in 1971 (starbucks.com- Our Heritage). It is extremely convenient and now has over 24,000 stores in the 70 countries it is located in, which is one of the reasons that it is so well known today (starbucks.com- Starbucks Coffee International). There is a large variety of coffees you could get, however, they do not focus solely on coffee. They also sell teas, smoothies, pastries, and more. Their mission is to “inspire and nurture the human spirit- one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time,” (starbucks.com- Our Heritage). It is a place that people can work on computers, study, or hang out at, so it is constantly in business.
Currently customers get their coffee from a couple local coffee shops, and a Starbucks in the Charleston Town Center Mall. There is a place in the market for a business in the area. We believe that this is the perfect time to enter into the market. It is not over saturated at the moment, and there is a lot of room for growth.
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction". These were the famous words were used by Isaac Newton to describe his third law of physics but, these words can also rather effectively describe a pattern seen in big history. That pattern is that every event, every change, every action, has reprocutions or in more simple terms, every cause has an effect. The readings films and other resources from the course so far have examplified this phonomonon and they have showed that by using this reasoning, that every cause has an effect, we can better predict the outcomes of our actions and by examining the world identifying causes and their effects. and by recognizing these cause and effect patterns we can make better decisions and avoid repeating past mistakes.
It was Christmas break, everyone was gone for the holidays except a few stragglers whose family lived too far away, were hanging around to keep working or just didn't have much else that was better to do.I fell into all those categories, luxuriating in the slacker pleasures of dreary Rhode Island in late December. I felt lonesome strolling in downtown Providence surrounded by massive concrete structures, corporate buildings and hotels. I was shivering and the salt and slush were sticking to the soles of my boots making a crunching noise with every step i took on the pavement. I walked into my favorite coffee shop, Bolt Coffee, to sit down and grab a cup of coffee in an attempt to escape the chilly winter air. The small coffee shop is located
Throughout the Civil War, coffee was as prevalent on the battlefields as it is in offices today. In fact, the Union army was fueled by coffee. When soldiers did not have time to boil water they would chew on whole beans as they marched. Every night, Union campsites had tiny fires, to be able to boil pots of coffee (Norris). Soldiers preferred coffee over everything else because coffee, was almost always fresh due to the simple fact that it was delivered whole, because coffee was sold in bean form it made it a lot more difficult the supplier to try to minimize on the quality of the product. But this did not stop the dishonest suppliers to try to sell less for more money. Officials began to ask for coffee as whole beans because of some of the suppliers and contractors who tried to get more money per pound by putting sand and dirt into packages of ground coffee (Norris). Coffee was loved among soldiers but it was convenient to find easier ways to make
While there are many decent places to get a chai around Boston, I would highly recommend going to Boston Common Coffee for your chai tea needs. While it may be slightly out of they way for students not living in Paramount, it’s long hours, decent pricing, and incredible drinks, makes it the place to go when you need your chai latte fix. I promise that you won’t be disappointed. If you can’t get to Boston Common Coffee, you will be happy with Cafe Nero or Thinking Cup, but whatever you do don’t go to Einstein Bros. Now everyone drink up those chai lattes. Enjoy!
Five years ago Eric quit his job at St. John's Coffeehouse. At the time I was working in a café and a health food store. There was no reason whatsoever for me to apply for a third job and yet I saw the job listing and thought why the hell not. I can still remember the first time I met Eric or really the first time I heard his laugh. I was in the kitchen of the coffeeshop and I heard someone laughing and I could tell whoever it was was behind the counter. So I ventured to the front and there he was making himself an ice coffee. Eric will tell you what he remembers from the day was that I didn’t charge him for his coffee even though I had no idea who he was. But I figured if someone was making his own coffee then I wasn’t suppose to charge him
Imaging if there was no more coffee in this world, how would you feel? Nowadays, coffee becomes an important part of people’s life. People who often work overtime, they drink coffee because caffeine can make you awake; people who have to wake up early in the morning, they drink coffee because instead of making breakfast, coffee is more convenient; people drink coffee during the free time, because it also tastes good.
Ever since its discovery, coffee has continued to spread its bitter or sweet taste all over the world. When taking a look at coffee’s journey from its simple beginnings, to its complex processing, and to its extensive use and consumption, one cannot help but be amazed at how prosperous and vital it has become American foodways.
