Technology is constantly getting more impressive, but these technologies need to have limits. One popular new technology is the drone. Merriam Webster defines drones as unmanned vehicles guided by remote controls. Advanced drones are used in the military; drones are also used for weather prediction, landscape mapping, and other uses. In the future, drones could make people’s lives easier and safer, but they could also idea because drones can injure people, spy on people, and be used by terrorists and criminals.

Because of the Vietnam War, drones or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are still used in the modern society. Drones have become more advanced and methodological to provide updated images of particular locations or fly greater distances than an airplane. As P.W. Singer confirmed drones are the most revolutionary change in weapons technology in the history of man and are considered to be equivalent to the invention of the computer according to Bill Gates. Both of these given statements are ascertained through their use not only in war, but also surveillance, agriculture, and the building of the database by scientists for climate change.

When the topic of drones is brought up, some may think they are not among us and are objects of the future, while others may have one that they’ve built themselves and put to use already. Drones are being talked about more and more but not necessarily all for good reasons. The reading titled “From the Eyes of a Drone” by Tomas van Houtryve touches upon how drones affect surveillance, photography, and use for weapons. In a BBC article, “Drones: What Are They and How Do They Work?” the author goes into specific detail on how the United States is planning to use drones for the military. If regular drone use becomes a normality in society, it is true that amazing photography will be a positive outcome but what about privacy? Drones can aid the military as well, but if they are released for the general public to use on the daily things may get out of control. While drones can impact several aspects of life positively, they can create even more harm than one may think.

Who is then responsible for the death of civilians? It is not an easy question to answer because the person who operates drone is “middle man” taking orders from the government. Also, the president does not make every decision when to strike because the CIA have power to make decision whether to strike or not without presidential approval. There was no case in which anyone was convicted of a drone strike that killed civilians and it is no surprise because the authorities would probably not openly admit to making a mistake.

In Gregoire Chamayou’s A Theory of the Drones, he focuses on how drones are transforming the laws of wars, and radicalizing certain aspects in warfare, that is bringing in a new era with immoral dimensions. This could alter the political arena for the countries that already use them. (13) The danger therefore, does not lie with the drone operators, as they no longer face the danger of being exposed to the enemy, this has also immunized them to the possible trauma of reflecting upon their own violence because they are viewing everything though a screen a thousand miles away. The real danger lies with society as a whole with the politics of waging war removed from the purview of citizens, this affects societies continued ability to critique or reject violence.

On Monday, January 26, 2015 a drone crash landed on the White House lawn. Though there are no flight restrictions on drone flight by the white house, this particular drone went undiscovered for many minutes because the radar system misapprehended the drone for a large bird.
