In the history of management thinking, there are many ways to manage an organization, such as scientific management and administrative management. This essay will discuss the notion that scientific management was a ‘good’ idea in the history of management thinking, by looking at the historical backgrounds and political beliefs of economist, also how the develop management theory by conducting experiments, and how their theories made it into the managing business does and how do they work. It is stated that Taylor’s experimenting and finding ideas on how to improve efficiency, it was started when Taylor witness on what he called soldiering while working in a steel industry. Soldiering is an action where the workers are actually working in slower pace than their actual capability. Taylor began studies and finding ways to improve the output production, also timed each task of the workers and experimenting and design the most effective way to complete the task, replacing the old rule-of-thumb methods which were used before the introduction of scientific management. While usually the workers were paid evenly, Taylor believed in the reward system; giving bonuses to workers who work hard and met the target output, and paid less to those who are lazy. (pp17-19)

Through Taylor’s studies based on his observation and experiments, Taylor develops four principles. The Taylor’s four principles is stated in a book by Gareth R. Jones and Jennifer M. George (2003), the first principle was observe how the workers done their job, gather information including timed taken for each task to be done, with that information Taylor was able to develop new ways of doing the task with more efficiency, replacing the rule-of-thumb method.
