The residents take shelter in the water. One of the archers whom name is Bard attacks Smaug and shoots him in his unprotected spot he learned of from the thrush. The people of Lake Town declare Bard king; however the master of Lake Town reminds the people of the dwarves and word of Smaug death travels to the elves and they and the men gather to take a share of the dwarf’s treasure. The dwarves refuse to share and the men and elves begin to attack the mountain. The dwarves fortify their defenses to defend themselves from the attack of the other army’s. Thorin gets word of another dwarf king that will come to help him. Bilbo convinces the elves to help by giving them the arkenstone. Thorin learns that Bilbo has the arkenstone and he tries to attack the young hobbit but Gandalf unexpectedly arrives to stop him. Gandalf warns the army’s that an army of goblins are coming in hopes to steal the treasure. Shortly after Bilbo is hit in the head by a rock and passes out. The goblins came close to victory but with the aid of the eagles and the shape changing Beorn they manage to be victorious. When Bilbo regains consciousness he learns that Thorin has been injured. Thorin is buried with his sword, Orchist which he got from the trolls in the begging of their adventure and the arkenstone. He also attends the burial of Fili and Kili who were also killed in battle. Bilbo is given one-fourteenth of the hoard
At the beginning of the adventure, Bilbo was a timid, little hobbit with no idea how to steal or survive outside of his little hobbit hole. When Thorin and the rest of the dwarves first meet Bilbo, they question
Bard sends out two messengers to note a peace treaty but Thorin declines that is until, they show the heart of Arkenstone. Then, Bilbo reveals what he had done, making Thorin angry, but before he could attack Bilbo, Gandalf reveals himself. Thorin makes an agreement to give the fourteenth part of the treasure to get the stone back. Although Thorin agrees, he waits until his army comes and get the stone by force first. When his army comes, Gandalf stops the beginning of war and revealing that the goblins and Wargs were joining too. This results to the Battle of Five Armies meaning that the dwarves, elves, and the townspeople against the goblins and Wargs. The battles begins and ends when the eagles come to join, tho Bilbo could not see what
The main antagonist of the first and second Hobbit books is Smaug, a dragon that has made his layer in the Lonely Mountain which was the Dwarves home, which they are trying to retrieve;
In the Hobbit there are fourteen main characters as well as many other characters that help along the way. The characters are Gandalf the Wizard, Mr. Bilbo Baggins, Throrin Oakensheild, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Fili, Kili, Bombur, Bifur, Bofur, Dwalin, and Balin. Gandalf is a wizard that helps the dwarves in their various journeys. He knows more than he reveals to the dwarves and everyone else and he knows that the hobbit can help the dwarves in their quest. That hobbit is Mr. Bilbo Baggins.
When the dwarves finally arrive at Lake-Town, the men of the town treat them like kings. The men give them food and hospitality, and they also help them get up to the Lonely Mountain. The help from the men of Lake-Town allows the dwarves to be rested and ready to face the dragon. The group works as a team to find the hidden door into the mountain. Bilbo can only get into the door with the help of Thorin, the group's leader. Thorin unlocks the door with the key. Without the joint effort between Thorin and Bilbo, the group wouldn’t have made it into the mountain. Once the door is open, Bilbo walks in, but Balin goes with him, because he wants to make sure Bilbo is safe. “‘Who is coming with me?’ asked Bilbo. He didn’t expect a chorus of volunteers, so he wasn't disappointed. [...] The others made no pretence of offering- except old Balin, who was rather fond of the hobbit” (Tolkien 213). This shows that the group cares about one another, and are working together to complete their quest. The group is also helped by the men of Lake-Town and Thrush. Once Bilbo finds that Smaug has a bare hole over his heart, he tells the other dwarves about the dragon’s weakness, and Thrush overhears. Thrush relays the information to the men in Lake-Town. Later that night, Smaug leaves his lair, and attacks Lake-Town. Many people shoot at
Bilbo shortly after donates the gem to Bard to provide aid while he bargains with Thorin, after which, Bilbo recognizes the importance of the jewel, and tells Bard that it is also the “heart of Thorin and he values it above a river of gold.” When Thorin hears of this, he is infuriated and goes to fight in the Battle of the Five Armies. Later, when the brawl has subsided, Bilbo finds Thorin, lying on a bed dying. He approaches Thorin, who immediately, apologizes for how arrogant, selfish, and greedy he acted. Although he was agreeably not a hero or leader, he didn’t deserve death for his
At this time, Thorin and the other dwarves gain more respect for the hobbit, who was once doubted and looked down upon. Bilbo’s intelligence and resourcefulness seems much more remarkable than Thorin’s integrity; since Thorin was considering on telling the elves about their journey. In this chapter, Bilbo has become responsible for the dwarves; as he uses his advantageous skills to steal food for them. The quote, “When he heard Bilbo’s voice through the keyhole, he could hardly believe his ears.” This indicated that Thorin was so relieved and reassured when Bilbo discovered him, because he knew he could rely on Bilbo to help him and the other dwarves escape. This chapter demonstrates how Bilbo, rather small; but he is a bright ray of hope for the dwarves when they are in

After receiving information from a messenger they were able to get time to defend the treasure from everyone who wanted to claim it. The first major army was the goblins who came on foot and some mounted on wolves ready to take the treasure just for greed itself as well as Wargs(which are and evil demonic breed of wolves). The other large army that wanted to secure the treasure was the Men, Elves, Eagles, and Dwarves. Just from instinct the greedy dwarves instantly cried, “Kill the Men! Kill the Elves! Save the gold for ourselves!”(Chapter 7). They had to unite for a greater cause and help each other survive the onslaught of over 15,000 Goblins and Wargs. The battle was decisively won by the Elves, Men, and Dwarves. Almost instantly after the legendary battle the Men were convinced they were the rightful owner of the treasure because Bard the Bowman killed Smaug and allowed the treasure to be claimed in the first place. Also, Smaug had stolen a great deal of his treasure the Men and they felt that they should have be compensated for the reparations that had been dealt to their city because Smaug had decided to burn down the town of Esgaroth out of confusion and anger before he was killed. The treasure was simply divided among the victors after negotiations between the dwarves and the men. Bilbo declined his share to only a mere 2 small chest of gold and silver to take
Him being at his home being comfortable and sitting outside and smoking his pipe at the beginning of the story. The here comes Gandalf with his long staff, and Bilbo greets him and say good morning to him. Gandalf says “What do you mean? Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?” Bilbo says all of them and invites Gandalf to sit down with him. Gandalf says that he does not have time to sit he is looking for someone to go on an adventure. Bilbo tells him he won’t find anyone around these parts. People who live in the Hill are quiet folks they aren’t into adventures. The rising action of the Hobbit is when Gandalf appears and asks Bilbo if he would like to go on an adventure. Bilbo of course at first says no and that hobbit’s do not go on adventures. Bilbo invites Gandalf tea and Gandalf accepts and before he leaves he leaves a sign on Bilbo’s front door. The next day Bilbo up and doing the things he would normally do when he hears a knock at his door. He thought it was Gandalf but it was Dwalin. Then two more dwarves Kili and Fili. Five more dwarves show up Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, and Gloin. Then Gandalf arrives with four more dwarves Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, and Thorin. They all start discussing the adventure, the map, and who was going to do what. Bilbo is excited about the adventure but
When Bilbo feels pity for Gollum, and decides not to kill him, he takes risks, as leaping over Gollum may fail, causing Bilbo to fall prey to Gollum. In this situation, Bilbo pushes himself to spare Gollum and make daring decisions, where Bilbo is not aware of the consequences. Therefore Bilbo signifies risk-taking when sparing Gollum, despite the unpredictable consequences that result from his decisions. Lastly, Bilbo demonstrates pushing himself to take risks, despite the danger, is during when Bilbo is chosen to survey inside the Lonely Mountain, Smaug's citadel (pg. 198-201). Bilbo understands that he must uphold his position as a burglar, and be the first to enter the Lonely Mountain, where Smaug inhabits. When Bilbo enters Smaug’s lair, is a primary example of Bilbo’s risk-taking, despite the prominent danger. Bilbo exploring Smaug's stronghold is the climax of danger during The Hobbit. During this situation, Bilbo pushes himself greatly, to explore inside the Lonely Mountain, in order to manifest his capability as a burglar, Bilbo surpasses his ability to take risks and discovers the extent of his risk-taking abilities. He ultimately finds greater courage within himself, as a result of pushing himself to take risks. Bilbo knows of Smaug, who represents the great danger within the mountains. He takes this opportunity to exceed his risk-taking skills. Therefore Bilbo takes risks by upholding his burglar responsibilities, despite facing the

The Hobbit introduces the reader to an incredibly immersive fantasy world, that enriches the reader into its epic storyline. The story takes place in a land called Middle-earth, a land filled with enchanting surprises and magical wonders. It is through this character that Tolkien implemented the theme of heroism into the story. Bilbo’s
On Lonely Mountain, in order to sneak into Smaug’s lair, Bilbo puts on his magic ring, which turns him invisible. He talks to the dragon for a while and gets the dragon to show him the under side of his stomach. Bilbo manages to get close enough to see the dragon’s weakness, which is a missing scale in his chest. Smaug gets
Everyone is able to make through the Misty Mountains without running into drop-offs and dead-end trails by taking Elrond’s and Gandalf's advice. The whole crew takes shelter under a hanging rock that was barely covering everyone when the weather starts to change so they send out Fili and Kili to seek for better shelter. Both of them return saying they found a dry cave and on that night, Bilbo could not sleep and every time he did he had bad dreams, when he woke up his bad dream was becomes part true. After realizing this, Bilbo lets out a loud yell that wakes up the others and a dozen or so goblins come out and kidnapped them. They take them to their leader who interrogates Thorin and tries to lie, but gets caught when they pull out Thorin’s
The story starts from the side of Mr. Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo starts as a nervous & annoyed host. He is hobbit, & his folk are reserved, but kind & carefree. Hobbits love to accommodate company when the time arrives, but this night Bilbo was in a ruck. Spontaneously, 13 dwarves & Gandalf tediously trickled through the door in groups & demanded dinner. Bilbo was not expecting these unknown & unplanned visitors, especially the grand total of 14! They ate & sang all night, while little time was devoted to business, which was planned that night. Bilbo was exhausted, unpleased, & unaffiliated with the pressing event they gathered to discuss. He was only aware that Gandalf selected him to be the Burglar of the party, which just so happened to be a vast journey across Middle-Earth. Unbeknownst to anyone, this was the start of a haunting tale, which Bilbo would never overlook. The first prominent issue Bilbo had to resolve the trolls. The group utilized this to test Bilbo’s strength, courage, brains, & stealth. Throughout the story, Bilbo continues to earn his spot among the dwarves, while the party is continually slammed with additional problems, however, everyday & every challenge reveals more of the nature of the dwarves & of Bilbo. With his role concluded & the Battle of Five Armies won, the yearning for home was too much to bear. Bilbo decided to travel home & achieve his part in the adventure of a lifetime. Each dwarf had grown quite fond of Bilbo, for the journey wouldn’t have been a success without their Burglar. The travel home was bittersweet & was a wonderful memoir of his quest. Gandalf accompanied him all the way to his Hobbit Hole on the Hill in Bag-End. Can we label Bilbo a hero? If so, what kind of hero is he? Is he a hero in history or in the eyes of the dwarves? Was Bilbo a savior for the descendants to come or the
