The Trinity is seen at work throughout the Old Testament, but what many people do not realize is how often the Holy Spirit is seen. The Holy Spirit is at work forming and shaping the history of the Bible. He guided rulers, came upon the mighty king Saul, and, even more amazing, the Spirit could make a stubborn obstinate heart obedient. He gave the men words to say and write so that people can read the message of the Lord. The Spirit is both hidden and revealed throughout the Bible. The Old Testament believers did not always realize the full power of the Holy Spirit, but taking a closer look at the work he did, we see that the Holy Spirit was extremely vital. Beginning in the book of Genesis the Holy Spirit is seen and takes an active role. “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” (Gen 1:2) At the time of creation the spirit was called ruah meaning, wind or breath of life. He was there at the beginning breathing the breath of life into human kind. The Holy Spirit was there at the forming of the earth and all that we know. He did not have to be there, nor did it meet a need of his, but out of his grace he chose to do it. The Holy Spirit along with the Trinity created all things, including humans. “The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” (Job 33:4) God gives man the breath of life, the Holy Spirit.
