Coming into the 21st century, we have come up with a new way to shed light upon one of our scariest nightmares. The new “boogeyman” that has swept across the nation and the world is called, Slenderman. He is an unusually tall and slender man dressed in a nice suit. He doesn’t seem scary at first until you see his, well, lack of a face. Even then, he doesn’t seem that scary until you hear the stories. Slenderman stalks and psychologically torments his victims (who are usually children) for long periods of time until he takes his victim in his long tentacles, which grow from his shoulder blades, and he drags them to another dimension where he consumes them (“Slender Man” The Wiki). These tales are just scary stories to strike a new fear into …show more content…
The contestants were to create paranormal-type photos using photo-editing software. Eric Knudsen (alias Victor Surge) is the creator of Slenderman. He took his entry one step further by adding in captions for the two photographs he entered. Each caption and photograph incited fear and morbid curiosity into those who saw it. From there, the legend of Slenderman took off. Other writers and creative enthusiasts took their own spin on the creature, writing intricate stories, making film series, and manipulating pictures which led to the creation a new monster for all to be afraid of or, in some cases, look up to and desire. (Information taken from “Slender Man”. …show more content…
For young, immature minds the “evidence” can be compelling; YouTube documentaries have been created (Slender Suits by fxscreamer), many forums and websites have “pictures” of Slenderman (creepypasta, SomethingAwful, Tumblr etc.), and stories written by non-proffessional sources from several other websites. For those who look further into it, evidence disproving all of this is easily found. If someone were to look up the true origin of Slenderman, it is clearly stated that it is a fictional character created for a photo contest. After the attempted murder of the Wisconsin girl, Something Awful even created an article (as blunt and unfeeling as it may be) telling people where Slenderman originates from and pleading with people to not be stupid and kill in Slenderman’s name (Parsons). Using the baloney detection kit (or any form of common sense for that matter), any “evidence” that Slenderman is real, is unsubstantial, as it is. Photographs, stories and videos are all dismissible due to how easily they can be manipulated into fallacies. The substantial evidence for the existence of a Slenderman type creature is truly
The novel Monster by Walter Dean Myers is the book I chose to read and do my essay on. The genre Walter chose for the book Monster is realistic fiction. The novel was published in 1999 which is a year after I was borning. The reason why I chose this Novel is because a teacher recommended the book to me a couple year ago but, I never got a chance to read it. I always assumed the book was good because it won three awards. The first award the book won was the National Book Award for young people’s literature. The second award the book won was the Michael L. Printz Awards. The third award the book won was called the Coretta Scott King Award Honor all in which the book won in the same year 2000. The book is told from the perspective of a young african american teenager named steve harmon. Steve lives in harlem where the story takes place. One night steve chose to hang with a bad group of friends and was in a robbery. During the robbery one of Steve’s friend kills the cashier. Now Steve is in jail and going back and forth to court hoping to be proven not guilty of felony murder. Steve and I lives are alike in many different ways although we come from different backgrounds.
There has been a flood of folklore and popular myth on the subject of supernatural beings capable of sucking the life out of their victims. One can find a mention of these creatures throughout the centuries. From a Succubus in the Bible to the Vampires of today’s Twilight Sagas, the short story “Luella Miller” by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman is no different. This story, unlike many other tails, did not just come out and say that the creature was present for sure; it more or less hinted to it possible existences. Also the hypnotic state that the victims were in brings the reader to believe that something unnatural is at hand. With a closer look through the eyes of our narrator, Lydia Anderson, we can
Just as Edward is seen as the typical gothic horror “monster”, so can the “normal” suburban community. As has been discussed, the appearance of Edward can be considered monster-like, but what truly makes a monster, is its personality and what it
The idea of what a monster is and how it pertains to modern day society has fascinated readers and writers for decades. Before taking this class, I was aware of what a monster is and the function it served in today’s society. Furthermore, after taking this class, I am now aware of what a monster truly is, and what really separates a monster from a regular person. The piece of text that I mainly chose to focus on and elaborate closely to demonstrate the aspects of a monster is appropriately named, Monster, by Walter Dean Myers. The reason I chose this piece of literature is because, Monster thoroughly elaborates what a monster is in todays society and how it functions in the modern day world. In this essay I will elaborate on

Stephen King said, “Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They’re inside us, and sometimes, they win.” This quote sums up the arguments made in the article “Why We Crave Horror” and what King believes. Stephen King makes three correct claims saying that humans crave horror to have a peculiar sort of fun, face our fears, and reestablish our feelings of normalcy.
Wes Craven’s horror movie “Scream”, inspired the gruesome murder of Gina Castillo. Castillo’s sixteen year old son and his fifteen year old cousin killed Gina Castillo. Why would anyone wish to watch the petrifying film, “Scream”? What would trigger a person to take inspiration from the horror movie, “Scream”. Stephen King describes horror as a piece of the human condition. Author of several horror novels, Stephen King wrote an essay titled “Why We Crave Horror.” In this paper he thoroughly explains why the human species craves horror and how it makes humans feel. In this essay, Stephen King precisely claims that humans desire, horror because horror pushes them to face their fears, renew their feelings of normality, and to expose
Thomm Quackenbush said “The seed of an urban legend find fertile soil at the corner of tragedy and imagination” in his book We Shadows. The image of Slenderman was created both in Anissa’s and Morgan's head and that eventually lead to the stabbing of Payton Leutner. Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser believed in the urban legend of Slenderman, causing them to commit this horrid act. Slenderman isn’t the only urban legend told to scare individuals the Grimm brothers introduced urban legends idea during the 19th century. Throughout the years children have become more interested in urban legends due to technology and that is why this legends sparked Anissa and Morgan to almost kill their friend.
In the book Monster, written by Walter Dean Myers, a young boy named Steve Harmon was accused of taking part of a crime. In a real life trial called Murder on a Sunday Morning, a young boy named Brenton Butler was also accused of being a part of a crime. The main reason of those false accusations is because of their skin color, the witnesses notice color instead of physical appearance.
him or her involved in the film - how often have you been watching a
His size 27 jeans look as if they might fall off of him at any given moment, and if it weren’t for his lengthy torso I’m sure he would need a kids size in shirts. His bones portrude from his skin bringing his veins to the surface. I swear you can see the blood flow through them. His cheeks cave in bringing his facial structure out like knives. I worry that if I touch them they might slice my delicate skin. It’s been doing it to him for years. As my eyes meet the dark hooded ovals that look almost like a home of what once belonged to a bat, I see a light.
The Washington Post, 10 Aug. 2015. Web. 18 Apr. 2016 IV. Your position (1-2 paragraphs) Based off of my research and reasoning, I strongly believe Slender Man is all one big made up character. People tend to get caught up in stories or hear things from other people and instantly believe it is real.

Horror Stories are a very popular genre of books. Some can be exceptionally malicious and gruesome in nature while others are tamer and rely on suspense. People tend to read these stories for the adrenaline rush, to explore the unknown, and to conquer their own adversities. Studies show that us as humans like to experience fear. We read and view scary stories so we can experience artificial situations of “fight or flight.” These scenarios, whether real or imagined, get your body ready for action by giving you an extra dose of adrenaline. The thrill and suspense that hangs over us while reading, is a welcomed feeling. Scary stories also allow us to explore the unknown. In books there are boundless supernatural realms, where wonder and horror walk side by side- realms were people rise from the dead, and fight their own
At the most basis level, horror movies are about the age-old fight between good and evil. At a deeper level, however, the beast within us is the evil that we have to conquer. This is exemplified in such movies of spiritual possession as The Exorcist and The Omen. A variation of the possession myth is the myth of transfiguration or metamorphosis. Dracula transfigure his victim with a bite; the full moon transforms a mere mortal into a lethal lycanthrope; a potion facilitates Dr Jekyll's metamorphosis into the evil Mr Hyde. These "monsters" are a symbol of the duality of human and reflect man's constant struggle within himself.
