There are numerous job related skill assessments that simulate physical demands that firefighters have to endure in order to prepare them for the situations they may face while on the job. In order to pass, they must complete and pass each assessment stage within an allotted time frame. There are eight assessments that test muscular strength, agility and muscular endurance. The first assessment is the Ladder Climb, in this test subjects carry a 9 kilogram breathing cylinder up a 12.2m ladder. The next test is called The Closed Area Search, subjects must search a confined space with a blacked out face mask and count the amount of washers hanging on the wall. Another test includes The Hose Carry, the participants carry a 38.5 kg bundle of hose
Initially starting a new task, we conduct a brief with all parties involved to discuss what is the end goal, how it is to be accomplished, the risks involved, and how the risks are mitigated. During the briefing period, personnel bring up their concerns and personal experiences to assist in the development of the task. The brief allows verification that the system to be worked has potential dangers removed. Training is conducted by walk-throughs to see first-hand potential hazards and give the person executing the task adequate practice time, which minimizes the potential for error or re-work. Execution phase, the person performs the task with a supervisor, and the supervisor monitors for safety and risks not seen by the person executing the activity. Supervisor tracks potential risk and will stop the activity if necessary in order to re-brief or re-trained the tasked individual. Finally, once the task is complete, feedback allows personnel to gather and discuss the pitfalls during the execution or what could have made the evolution
Evaluating people, products, and incidents; is a constant for myself as a Captain in the fire department and adjunct faculty for the fire academy at Austin Community College. Peripheral venous access in infants and children is technically challenging. Not only in children but also in adults veins may be difficult to locate in some cases. Peripheral venous access is usually required for administration of fluids or medications in hospitalized patients. Even for experts, peripheral venipuncture in infants and adolescents is difficult because of small and deeply-located veins. Several devices adjunct to vein identification and catheter insertion have been devised in the attempt to optimize peripheral catheterization.
Firefighter fitness and health have become common topics in the fire service over the last few years. With programs such as the Fire Service Joint Labor Management Wellness-Fitness Initiative (WFI) and the Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives produced by Everyone Goes Home, demonstrate the importance of working towards improving the overall physical and mental health of firefighters. These programs are a result of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) establishing guidelines for firefighter protection. There are three standards that have been established to address firefighter health and wellness; NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program; NFPA 1582, Standard on

Veins, arteries and capillaries are the delivery routes of the heart which allow blood to be distributed to the body and organs. Moreover, where gas exchange takes place. Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart to the systemic circulation and deliver oxygen-rich blood to the body whereas veins carry de-oxygenated blood from capillary beds towards the heart to get oxygenated (Marieb & Hoehn, 2013). For gas exchange the capillaries are in the lungs. Gas exchange occurs when O2 from the lungs to the bloodstream via the capillaries; at the same time CO2 passes from the bloodstream to the lungs. The Capillaries are located in the lungs within the muscles. Capillaries transport oxygen through its walls and diffuse into the tissue.

The fire service is now being pushed to the limit by communities that expect more out of the types of services provided. More than ever, fire departments rely on training to prepare their new recruits and maintain the skill level of its existing firefighters. These firefighters must be trained so that they will gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to serve and respond to those in need of assistance. If the fire service desires a change in operations, training is essential to educate firefighters on those changes. Training also allows a fire department to evaluate the capabilities and limitations of its firefighters (National Fire Protection Association, 2009).
She did not need repetition of any directions and correctly completed all samples on the first trial without needing prompts. Rapport was easily established and Jane seemed at ease throughout. Jane displayed appropriate affect and did not display frustration when items became more difficult, but rather persisted until she arrived at an answer. Overall, she seemed to complete most tasks quite quickly, and in very few instances did she need to be prompted to answer. The testing environment was inspected prior to beginning the assessment to ensure it allowed for comfortable testing conditions. There were no distractions or interruptions throughout the test. The room was well lit and set at a comfortable temperature. All materials were presented at appropriate distances to ensure that the individual could see and reach them. Based on the observations and due to no visible difficulties, the following scores can be stated as valid representations of their respective abilities at this point in time.
As of 2014, there were around 1,134,400 firefighters serving in 27,198 fire departments nationwide and responding to emergencies from 58,150 fire stations. Out of the 1,134,400 firefighters, 31 percent of them were professional firefighters and 69 percent of them were volunteers. Firefighters generally work long shifts that include weekends and holidays. The two most common types of shifts for firefighters are 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off duty, or 48 hours on duty with 96 hours off duty. On a daily basis, firefighters work with heavy, loud and dangerous tools such as axes, sledgehammers, chainsaws, k12 saws, the jaws of life, fire engines, SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus), hoses, water nozzles, among many other tools and apparatus. The Personal Breathing Apparatus (air pack) provides the firefighter with clean oxygen. It is made up of a high-pressure tank, a pressure regulator, and an air mask.
