What is classism and what has it caused in today's society? In The Book Thief, The House on Mango Street, and Persepolis the main characters deal with society in a way different from expected. Liesel, the main character of The Book Thief, copes with the dangers or differences of society by stealing and reading books, while Esperanza, from The House on Mango Street, write poems to escape from her impoverished world. On the other hand, Marjane, the main character from Persepolis, wants to become an adult and do everything her parents do such as protesting. The characters are impacted by classism negatively because it causes less resources, hatred towards others, and destruction. The events from each book lead to loss of resources such as money and jobs. In Persepolis Marjane’s father goes to talk to the man from across the street and tells him that Mehri, the maid, isn’t his daughter it then says, “Without any hesitation, Hossein gave all the letters he had received to my father” (Satrapi 37). Marjane’s father wanted Hossein to know that about Mehri because he didn't want Mehri having false love. Due to having less resources Mehri isn’t …show more content…

The mayor and his wife take Liesel to their home it says, “A few blocks down Munich street, there was a clear line separating the bombed from the fortunate” (Zusak 545). They were bombed by enemy forces and all the houses in Liesel’s block were destroyed. The mayor and his wife since they had more money and were of higher class were not bombed at all. Liesel went to find Max in the crowd of Jews “The whip sliced her collarbone and reached across her shoulder blade” (Zusak 513). Since they are Jews they aren’t suppose to be talked to but Liesel talks to Max and gets whipped. In this case the jews are of lower class, but also Liesel because where she lives wasn’t exactly the richest neighborhood. Classism has lead to destruction and chaos and has many other effects
