Growing up everyone could use a role model. Role models can lead you in the right or wrong direction. My role model growing up was my dad. He always leads me in the right direction and always tells me to be better than he was. In the book The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Esperanza, has a variety of female role models in her life. Many are trapped in an abusive relationships, waiting for others to change their lives.Some are actively trying to create change on their own. Through these women and Esperanza’s reactions to them, Cisneros not only shows the hardships women face, but also explores their power to overcome them. One role model that Esperanza has is Minerva. Minerva ,like Esperanza, is in a abusive relationship .” She has many troubles, but the big one is her husband who left and keeps leaving. One day she is through and lets him know enough is enough. Out the door he goes Clothes, records,shoes. Out the window and the door locked. But that night he comes back and sends a big rock through the window” (Cisneros 85). Esperanza and Minerva use writing to try to better their life.“She lets me read her poems. I let her read mine. She is always sad like a house on fire--always something wrong” (84). Esperanza’s mother is the type of role model that does not want Esperanza to be like her . She tells Esperanza “I could have been somebody, you know? Esperanza, you go to school. Study hard” (91). Esperanza’s mother, who refers to herself as Madame Butterfly, was a smart cookie but quit school? Now you may ask yourself, if she was a smart cookie then why did she quit school? Well, she says “ because I did not have nice clothes. No clothes, but I had brains”( 91). Esperanza can use Madame Butterfly as an inspiration to stay in school and use it to overcome her
