In the novella, The House on Mango Street, Esperanza tells stories of the many women, young and old, she has met and learned about. Few of these women have been respected by the men in their lives. Most of these men consider women things to possess. Some of these men have their reasons, though inexcusable, for how they act. Very few are kind and considerate towards the ladies in their lives. The men in this novella all have their own stories that are inexplicably intertwined to the suffering of women. Investigating these stories shows that in Esperanza’s world, men treat women like property, and men treat women like they are to be used. Women have gender roles forced upon them that they are expected to fulfill, in the novella and in real life, and most times the men in their lives help to push them directly into those expectations. These men are under the belief that that is what women are meant for. The men do not treat women like they should be treated. The men treat women with disrespect by taking control of their lives and shaping those lives into how women are expected to be, and believe women belong to them. The men treat women like objects to fulfill their own desires. The problems between genders in this novella are becoming more addressed in today’s society. Women are breaking standards set for them and men are accepting it and encouraging it. Even so, the fact still remains that there are women who can’t change their life and men exist who still have such outdated beliefs about women. The House on Mango Street is a great example how women are not to be treated by men. Hopefully, one day the world can overcome expectations set for all genders and people can live happily without boxes to be forced
Throughout The House on Mango Street Esperanza learns to resist the gender norms that are deeply imbedded in her community. The majority of the other female characters in the novel have internalized the male viewpoint and they believe that it is their husbands or fathers responsibility to care for them and make any crucial decisions for them. However, despite the influence of other female characters that are “immasculated”, according to Judith Fetterley, Esperanza’s experiences lead her to become a “resisting reader” in Fettereley’s terminology because she does not want to become like the women that she observes, stuck under a man’s authority. Sexism is a challenge almost all women face. In a way, sexism can be beneficial because it can motivate women to defy society's standards and anything holding them back. However, in The House on Mango Street, author Sandra Cisneros, shows both sides of sexism, and how it can motivate women. Sexism can also make women give up and not accomplish anything. While Cisneros has the protagonist fight off sexism, Esperanza runs into many cases of sexism where the women just give up. Similarly, with The Help, author Kathryn Stockett, also shows both the positive and negative side of sexism. In life many people set goals for themselves. For some people it maybe a goal such as obtaining a high test grade and for others it maybe to one day own a race car. Everybody has a different outlook on life and everyone has different goals in which they one day hope to achieve. The people who achieve their goals are those who are motivated and determined to do so. When these goals are achieved it is then when you are a hero to yourself.
Society has built a role for women. And there’s no better example of this idea than The House on Mango Street, in which Esperanza describes specific moments of her life which lead her to believe in women independence and feminism. She has different ideas and thoughts on the definition of women and what they should be. Esperanza doesn’t fit into the constructed definition Mango Street has of how women should be.
In life, we are often deeply influenced by the people who surround us. Consider the age-old adage “Birds of a Feather Flock Together”; this familiar saying reminds us that, in life, we gravitate toward people who appeal to us, and those people can have a great impact on who we are and the choices we make. In Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street, Esperanza meets many women who play a role in her life. Some of the women impact her in negative ways, but others help her to see that she can make more of her life than what her Chicago neighborhood offers. Of all the women in Esperanza’s life, Esperanza is most influenced by her mother and Alicia because they teach her to rely on herself in order to escape Mango Street.
In The House On Mango Street, the metaphor of the “[red] balloon tied to an anchor” (Cisneros, 9) helps reveal the theme of how societal roles limit women. The anchoring of the red balloon demonstrates how gender roles oppress women. Cisneros uses red to indicate sexuality as in the “Red Clowns” and “red lips” (88) of the femme fatale in the chapter “Beautiful & Cruel”. Additionally, the red balloon represents women because the anchor keeps the balloon from being free and in a similar way, gender roles keep women from being free. Women on Mango Street enter a stifling cycle of taking up the typical roles of women. Society expects women to “wait... for a husband” (88) and to “spend [their] lives… behind a rolling pin.” (31-32). In Sally’s case, she is dependent on men and she marries “young and [unready,] but married just the same.” (101). Sally marries “to escape” (101), entering the cycle that women on Mango Street go through, and ends up a prisoner of her own home. It means sadness, it means waiting” (10). Not only is Esperanza’s name a way to trace her origin but it is also symbolic to the book as a whole. Her name illustrates how the Spanish inside her is sad and it is putting her in a position that is weighing her down and keeping her from becoming someone. The English counterpart is what is keeping her going and motivated to find a way to escape Mango Street and all it encompasses. Just like a genuine immigrants dream when they come to America, Esperanza’s name means “hope” and she uses this hope for a better life to “One day I will pack my bags of books and paper. One day I will say goodbye to Mango. I am too strong for her to keep me here forever. One day I will go away” (110). Cisneros uses the name of her character to give her a place in a Latino setting and start expounding on her thoughts and feelings that come with that life.
Sandra Cisneros’, “The House on Mango Street” focuses on the narration of Esperanza, a young adolescent growing up in Chicago. Throughout the novel, Esperanza strives to develop her own sense of identity, while searching for the means out of her poverty-stricken neighborhood. With the help of her friends and family, Esperanza discovers how the world works, and what she needs to do in order to successfully better herself. The novel features several concepts of gender and sexuality studies including that of class structures, red-lining, gender, sexuality, intersectionality, and beauty. Those listed are simply a few more prominent features, as each character Esperanza introduces displays many more concepts within each scene. The concept of gender is portrayed widely throughout the novel and creates a foundation for the expectations the girls are about to face as they grow. Intersectionality interplays within the daily lives of each girl, and is seen within every page of the novel. Finally, beauty standards play an important role in the transition from adolescent to young adult each girl faces. Together, gender, intersectionality, and beauty standards, make up the novel, as it portrays the importance of each of these three core concepts of gender, women and sexuality studies.
