Scientists and medical researchers have been using animals for many years to gain knowledge about the human body and diseases. Using animals in research is one of the most controversial debates today. Humans no longer need to eat or wear animals to survive, but it is still a debate whether using animals is crucial in medical research. Animals and human structures are only similar in some aspects. The human body is so complex that using animals for research and testing is not the most effective method although using animals in medical research has led to many results in the development of many drugs valuable to humans thus far. Using animals to advance medical research is not always effective and will become unnecessary with alternate methods developed through technology. Animals being used in medical research dates back hundreds of years. According to
Nuno Franco physicians in ancient Greece were the first to dissect animals because of the taboo of the dissections of human beings (239). Throughout the years of research and many experiments with many scientist and doctors many questions arose. The people questioned whether it was immoral or humane to use animals for the sake of humans. Along with questions if animals could feel as humans do. Among other questions was if using animals to advance medical research was effective due to the differences in antonym between humans and animals (Franco). By the twentieth century there were many advances in medical knowledge and the
Throughout the years the use of animals in medical research has been a hot debate around the world. Although animal testing may be cruel and inhumane, thousands of humans are saved thanks to the research that animals supply researchers with. Animals testing have taken over our knowledge of medicine and treatments to a whole different level. Animal testing also does this in a cheap and effective way. Without animals testing out knowledge wouldn’t be up to date, in other words animals’ testing is good.
Animals should not be used for scientific experiments. According to ‘Should Animals Be Used for Scientific or Commercial Testing?’ Animals are so different from human beings that research
The testing of animals in scientific and commercial research has been debated for many years. Some people view animals as companions or part of the family, but others think of them as a way to advance medicine by providing researchers with a means to develop better medical techniques, discovering vaccines, and helping to find a cure for a disease. Regardless of how a person may view animals, they are worthy of better protection by our government and us as a society. Although some animal testing has been successful, there are research alternatives that could eliminate the pain, suffering, and deaths that animals endure in scientific research. Therefore, animals should not be used in scientific research
As you can see with these examples, it is absolutely necessary to use animals in research; for diseases that currently exist and for the ones yet to be discovered. There is no doubt that using animals to test products and to develop lifesaving medications and surgical procedures have improved our quality of life
It has been proven that “animal research has played a vital part in nearly every medical breakthrough over the last decade” states Understanding Animal Research, an advocacy group that aims to demonstrate the need for humane animal research. Animal testing acts as a huge help to the well-being and health of
From the early beginnings of civilizations, humans have had a symbiont relationship with animals. Animals have allowed humans to make great progression through history, from early farming methods, to transportation, even scientific research. Recently the ethics of the use of animals in scientific research and clinical testing have been a subject of a controversial debate. Animals have been used in scientific research as early as 500 BC (Miziara et al. 2012). One of the most impactful innovations for quality of life since the end of the middle ages has been medicine, drastically improving life spans and reducing child deaths. One of the key sources of medicinal research during this time and to this day are animal models.
All through the world animals have, and are still being used in science for research, education, medical, and cosmetic purposes. Millions of animals, including rats, dogs, cats, and birds have been used in procedures in just this decade alone. Testing on animals can be painful, and deadly. Even though animal research is easier than human research, animal experimentation should be put to an end, because animals should not have to suffer while testing products for human purposes.
Animal experiments date back long ago, the first use of animals in experiments date back to when ancient Greek physicians first used animals as models for anatomy and physiology. (Franco) Since then testing has been an ongoing even into the twenty first century. During that time, many treatments of diseases and procedures for humans and animals alike owe
It is believed that animal experimentation is needed in order to benefit from the results and improve in the medical field. However, in reality, most of the experiments do not aid in making much progress in human health. A considerable reason would be the differences between animals and humans. Animal rights organizations
Animal Experimentation has a long history for the use of humankind and animals are being used in a large number to study and develop drugs for the diseases that human beings suffer from. “Between 17 million and 22 million animals are estimated to be used annually in the United States in research, education, and testing and about 85 percent of these are rats and mice, and less than 2 percent are cats, dogs, and nonhuman primates (Office of Technology Assessment, 1986)” (National, R. C. S. 1988, p. 18).
Going over many articles and sources, I have conducted an understanding research to help people realize the beneficially side for medical research performed on animals. Using Animals for Testing: Pro Versus Cons and Benefits of Biomedical Research are two of the several sources I used to conclude my investigation to inform people about medical research among animals. With numerous data and results, I will provide an attempt to prove why medical research should be conducted on animals.
The debate about using animals for medical testing has been raging for years. The struggle always seems to be between extremist animal rights activists who believe that animals should never be used for research, and scientists who believe that any use of animals is acceptable. There are a growing number who argue that there must be a reasonable middle ground. I contend that there must be a significant decrease in the number of animals used by humans to further human goals. I will give a historical account of animal use, provide some statistics about animal use, present some arguments against the use of animals and present Singer's view
Animal research has played a pivotal role in medical research in the last decade. It has saved and improved the lives of millions of people. Today's medicines and surgical techniques could not have been discovered without better understanding of disease and the way the body works. Animals have played a huge role. Many medical research institutions make use of non-human animals as test subjects. Animals may be subject to experimentation or modified into conditions useful for gaining knowledge about human disease or for testing potential human treatments. Because animals as distant from humans as mice and rats share many physiological and genetic similarities with humans, animal experimentation can be tremendously helpful for furthering medical
The aim of this paper is to represent the widespread use of animals in research, with a specific focus on evidence of the advantages and disadvantages of using animals in medical research.
From the dawn of time, the primitive beings that wandered the face of this earth have always been fascinated and curious about the perplexing human body. They have pondered upon the mysteries that lie dormant within the vessel and the potential of what it could do. Even today, after millions of years have passed, anatomists still have yet to explore the human body completely and uncover all its complexity. Along with the advancement of our knowledge in terms of anatomy and physiology, the concept of health has also evolved. In fact, the human body and health go together like peanut butter and jelly; you cannot have one without the other. Unlike the approved definition used in the past, health is much more than the “absence of disease” and having a fit body. This paper will present you my rendition of the definition of health and my personal reflections on the health-related readings presented in this course so far.
