Osteoporosis Research Paper The human body is dependent on a substructure made almost entirely of bones, making bones extremely vital in addition to the fact that red blood cells are generated within the bone marrow. Therefore healthy bones contribute to the overall health of a living organism. However, bones are susceptible to infections and diseases much like the body parts of the rest of the body. These diseases/infections span anywhere from bone cancer and osteomyelitis to osteoporosis along with many other diseases. Osteoporosis is a rare, genetic disease related to the skeletal system that affects the bone structure of billions of people, it is a medical condition in which the bones become brittle and frail. This is because the disease targets individuals affected with osteopetrosis that do not have normal osteoclasts, which is a necessity that bones need in order to work correctly. Healthy bones require fully functioning osteoblasts and osteoclasts, osteoblasts being those responsible for creating new bone and osteoclasts being bone cells that are responsible for the breaking down of bones. When an individual with osteopetrosis has dysfunctional osteoclasts, their bones are not healthy. This disease puts a burden on both the affected individual, health systems, and societies worldwide.
