Katniss and Peeta were able to kill Cato. Katniss and Peeta encountered Cato on the Cornucopia as they escaped from the muttations. “Cato has made a beeline for the Cornucopia, and without question I follow him. If he thinks it’s the safest place, who am I to argue? ” (Collins 327). Katniss shot an arrow in which Peeta was able to push Cato off of the Cornucopia even though Peeta was bleeding from his leg, which resulted in Cato being attacked by Muttations. Katniss and Peeta are not able to kill each other. The death of Cato leads Katniss and Peeta to kill each other, however because they can not do so, they choose a double suicide in which they end up as the victors of the Hunger Games. “We both know they have to have a victor. Yes, they have to have a victor. Without a victor, the whole thing would blow up in the Gamemakers’ faces. They’d have failed the Capitol. Might possibly even be executed, slowly and painfully while the cameras broadcast it to every screen in the country. If Peeta and I were both to die, or they thought we were…” (Collins 339). As they were both about to die they heard “the frantic voice of Claudius Templesmith shouts above them. “Stop! Stop! Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy-fourth Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark! I give you — the tributes of District Twelve!” (Collins 340). The epic hero’s life is usually shown as situational or uncomfortable so the audience can identify the protagonist through sympathy. Katniss Everdeen is the protagonist in the novel, The Hunger Games. This proves that she has an ongoing development through the story, as she topples over obstacles and circumstances that led her to new perspectives. For example, she changes through the influence of her experience in the Capitol and in the arena of the Hunger Games.
