The Hunger Games: Should it be censored?
Since its publication in 2008, The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins has become “one of the top 50 books sold on kindle and in stores today” according to Forbes Magazine. (Gaudiosi. 1). Because of its astounding popularity, the novel has also attracted a large amount of criticism as well as praise. Because The Hunger Games’ basic storylines revolves around teens fighting each other in order to survive, many people disagree with the fact that the book should be considered a young adult novel. Unashamedly Megan Cox seems to believe that The Hunger Games is potentially harmful to children, yet the book is targeted towards ages 16 and up, which could be considered more of an adult genre than an actual children genre. Typically children 16 years and older attend high school and are generally expected to fend for themselves and assume responsible self-sufficiency, why should reading choice not be included in these responsibilities? The phrase “young adult” seems to project an image of a person entering adulthood and maturing in their life position. Generally teenagers are expected to grow up and become adults, yet how can “young adults” become adults if they are not exposed to life as an adult or the ability to think for themselves. Cordon’s statement seems faulty as she is not considering the age group to which she is referring.
