Technological advancements in the television industry over the past decades have changed the way people watch movies and television. The first successful movie rental store that allowed people to watch in the comfort of their home was Blockbuster in 1985 (Kaplan 2011). Netflix re-invented the movie rental industry in 1999 becoming more personalised and less of a “linear TV experiences.”(Kaplan 2011; Netflix’s View 2015) Consumers are now able to download or stream movies via the Internet and watch on any compatible device (TV, computer, mobiles, etc.) due to these technological advancements. This essay analyses the outcomes of Blockbuster and Netflix by assessing their effectiveness to plan, organise, lead, and control (Waddell, Jones and George 2013, 7).
