THE LIFING APPLIED BY THE UNITED STATES The first Apache helicopter was delivered to the United States Army in 1997 by Boeing. The United States Army now has more than 800 Apache aircraft in service. It has also exported over 1000 Apache helicopters worldwide to countries such as, the Netherlands, Singapore and Israel to name a few. In this time, the US Apache has had no recorded CSD incidents from over 4 million recorded flight operating hours. There has been no un-commanded initiation of the CSD system either in flight or on the ground (discounting human error causes) in over 20 years of operation. The current lifing applied by the US can be seen in Appendix E, which shows the comparisons for all 19 CSD components between the UK and the …show more content…
To give a full representation of how other platforms utilise a crew escape system, 4 rotary wing aircraft were chosen. These were the UH-60 Black Hawk, the CH-47 Chinook, the AH-1 Cobra and the AW-159 Wildcat. For simplicity and to give a better comparison for the Apache AH Mk1, only the cockpit crew escape systems have been analysed, not the cabin escape system. UH-60 BLACK HAWK The UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter is manufactured by Sikorsky and has been in operation since 1978. It is primarily used as a troop personnel carrier and provides a logistical capability. The UH-60 Black Hawk has a purely manual operation of door release. It has emergency release handles located on the inside of each of the cockpit doors. If these handles are subsequently pulled with approximately 40-45 lbs. of force, the doors can be separated from the locating points. The door will then be separated from the aircraft, allowing the aircrew to egress the aircraft. CH-47 CHINOOK The CH-47 Chinook is manufactured by Boeing, and has been exported to both military and private operators worldwide. It is primarily used as a troop and logistics transporter, as well as providing essential medical evacuation on operations. The CH-47 Chinook emergency release handles are located above both cockpit doors. They can be operated by either pulling or pushing the handles with approximately 35-40 Ibs of force. Once the handles are operated the doors will simply fall out. The CH-47 Chinook
With this new and improved anti-aircraft tank it became one of the perfect air defense weapon systems for potential low-altitude threats, with the M55 Quad 50 as its only rival in versatility. Known as the ‘Whispering Death’, the M55 Quad 50 consisted of four Browning M2 .50-caliber machine guns mounted in a power turret on a deuce and a half (2 ½) or 5 ton truck (“ADA Units in Vietnam”, n.d.). “Generally speaking…Quads could not go cross-country in support for maneuver units. But in operations away from established road nets where heavy machine-gun support was needed, it was possible to slingload the Quad with the CH-47 helicopter” (Charles E. Kirkpatrick, in “Arsenal”, Vietnam magazine,
Centuries before the Korean War, wars were long and painful events that any man could ever go through. Troops would match from countries to countries, crossing mountains, trial through the forest, and wander the desert to meet with their enemy in battle. The only problem with the troops traveling so far for so long is that before the war ever starts, the men were fatigued and casualty rates were higher than they should be. By the Korean War, an amazing machine was introduced to the military ranks, turning the tide in warfighting and troop survivability. UH-1 Huey Helicopter, or Utility Helicopter, was the one machine that was created by Bell that change the concept in warfighting and giving the United States the upper hand in war. On several
The jet fighter planes ended up playing a large role throughout the war. The use of helicopters was used throughout the war for resupply missions and they started using the helicopters as a medevac for wounded personnel. Since time is of the essence these new helicopter medevac’s saved a lot of people by getting them to a location for medical help significantly faster than previous methods. This method also became incredibly crucial during the Vietnam War along with the helicopters being armed with missiles and machine guns to cause damage and be able to evacuate the
The United States Air Force is a dedicated and effective establishment, and has been a great advantage in protecting the United States during numerous wars. It all started on August 1, 1907, General James Allen, Cheif Signal Officer or the U.S Army created and established the Aeronautical Division. He entrusted this organization with "All matters pertaining to military ballooning air machines and related subjects." (Creation) Allen then put in command, Captain Charles D. Chander who was assisted by two enlisted men. The Aeronautical Division is the very beginning of todays U.S Airforce.

They knew exactly where their prey was, teams from the 19th Special Forces Group had been trailing, watching and reporting on every move General Magnus and his staff had mad. The two Delta teams moved quickly, as the three Apaches started to take fire and were quickly snuffed out, the Soldiers didn’t have a chance. The Apaches were painted black, there had no reflection, no running lights on, and once a Soldier fired on them, it gave them a heat signature. They fired at the signature with their mini-guns cutting in half who had ever fired at them. It was enough for most of the Soldiers on the ground to see the helicopters there. Where in the hell did they come from, they were told that by their own commanders there was no way for most aircraft to have survived the big lights out
The sheep herder that the team made contact did not pose a hostile threat and the only course of action they had, was to let the man go. Although the team knew that this was going to affect their mission, they were following their orders, which ultimately lead to their downfall. Once communication was made with their recovery forces, they began to emplace a plan. The QRF’s plan was rushed and not completely thought out. The main focus was to get to the Navy SEAL team. The QRF chinooks left without their attack helicopters which possibly could have provided more fire power coverage and lead to a sooner recovery of their friendly forces. This resulted in even more casualties then there was necessary. The helicopter teams did not successfully plan for accepted risk and unnecessary risk. After five days of forced planning and being forced to wait, the QRF force was able to successfully plan and recover all of their friendly forces. This forced planning occurred due to the fact that air was not sufficient for helicopters to
The Aviation Branch of the U.S. Army, as we know it today, did not exist at the turn of the 1800 to 1900 centuries. The military did use a Balloon Corps and Detachment for the Civil and Spanish-American Wars respectfully. However, the Army deactivated both organizations after their usage in the campaigns. These artillery spotters and reconnoiters were helpful. However, the leadership did not see a usage for them outside of war. Therefore, it would take someone understanding the potential of air power to open a door for its peacetime usage. This occurred with the birth of the Signal Corps.
Corporation's H -13 Sioux helicopters for evacuation and movement of the wounded in the Korea War. However, the Army redesigned the concept of medical evacuation by using a larger helicopter that could carry medics and first responders. (Dorland & Nanney, 1982) This larger aircraft, the UH-1 Iroquois, was first used by the 57th Medical Detachment in Vietnam. Once in country, the medical service corps realized the helicopter needed another feature, the hoist. The creation of the hoist was developed through the understanding of the terrain in Vietnam, the trial and error
Doors can be breached using explosives, battering rams or in some cases by shotguns or even vehicles, but it is never a good idea to try and force it by kicking or shouldering the door.
As such, we always advise our clients to always make use of the handle set the locks at all times. Though this may appear to be basic advice that everyone should stick to, but experience has shown us that it’s something too many people tend to overlook. Handle sets are quite easy to use and do not require an intricate procedure to latch them.
Rescue aircraft such as the MH-60 Jayhawk and the S-92 Superhawk have been used to great effect in a variety of rescue and emergency operations. While many other helicopters produced by companies other than Sikorsky used in such missions utilize designs that were produced in large part after Sikorsky helped show the efficacy of such aircraft. Sikorsky dreamed of a
