Negative influence of Catfishing in Social Media Most of us use social media in some part of our day. Statista statistics claim, “In 2016 there is 78 percent of U.S. Americans had a social media profile, representing a five percent growth compared to the previous year.” This number will increase as we rely more and more on technology. One of the negative social media trends that have been increasingly popular is catfishing. Catfishing as google dictionary defines it as to “lure someone into a relationship by means of a fictional online persona.” It can also be a brilliant method to find out if your boyfriend cheating or to monitor football players social media. However, most people take advantage of it because they are bored, have nothing do, issues with self-confidence, low self-esteem, and when it does not work they cyberbully the victim who’s been catfished. Catfishing is becoming a big issue today relating to the rising percentage of people who are dating online.
