Scotland’s tourism industry is growing rapidly. Private companies and government sectors desire for more environmental friendly practices has spurred the creation of new strategies and regulation. Research has and is continued to be carried out. The focus of this research paper is to look at the significance of tourism on Scotland’s Environment and the action taken by private companies and government agencies. Scottish Natural Heritage plays a key role in introducing and encouraging best practice methods for the good for Scotland’s environment. Tourism companies Wild Scotland and Visit Scotland have taken steps to implement better tourism strategies. While case studies of the last two decades have been successful in encouraging sustainable tourism. Tourist are attracted to Scotland for the mass undeveloped areas and diverse wildlife. 90% of tourist visiting Scotland “associated beautiful scenery with Scotland prior to their visit.” (MacLellan, 4). For these reasons and more there is a widespread desire to carry out more environmental friendly practices. According to MacLellan and supported by the Scottish Government, Scotland’s major environmental problems are caused by transportation and accommodations. These activities require high volumes of energy consumption; which in turn emits harmful pollutants directly and indirectly into our biosphere.
