Pop music in Korea, as known as K-pop, is in vogue. It is not only popular in Korea, but countries all over Asia and even in Europe. Every teenage has heard one or two K-pop songs. In fact, similar tread occurred before. Canto-pop (Hong Kong pop music) and J-pop (Japanese pop music) also become popular in the world since 1980s and 1970s. In this essay, backgrounds of the pop music will be discussed. The differences in pop music among these three places and the impacts made will be included.

In the 1980s, Canto-pop started its golden age. Stars like Anita Mui, Leslie Cheung, Sally Yeh, Sandy Lam, and Alan Tam became famous in Asia. Canto-pop songs often occurred in Hong Kong movies. Songs that trigger dance crazes all over the world, such as “Sorry Sorry” by Super Junior, “Gee” by Girl’s Generation and “Nobody” by Wonder Girls, are well liked. In fact, before this dance craze songs occurred, K-pop were already famous. They incorporated with American music like rap, R&B. Groups such as H.O.T., G.O.D, Diva were very successful in Korea. However, the real turning point of K-pop is when the dance craze spreads. According to Russell (2012), after gaining popularity in Asia, K-pop genre now has reached out to Eastern Europe, Middle East, and South America.
When speaking of the difference of pop music between Hong Kong, Korea and Japan, it is not difficult to observe. Canto-pop usually contains two elements: soft melody and a sad love story, even Erni(1998:60-61)described Canto-pop as “the sentimental lyrics, the melancholic melody, and the banality of romance”. Love ballad became the mainstream in Hong Kong since 1970s so it is not a surprise that people have a stereotypical impression on Canto-pop.
