For the occupation of nursing it is important that nurses look after themselves both physically and mentally as the vocation is very demanding. Physically the career involves things like heavy lifting, long periods of walking/standing, long exhausting working hours, pushing/pulling and good eyesight and vision which is a very hard to maintain if you are getting little to no sleep. Mentally nursing requires you to be good and quick at making decisions, also you will be analysing the patients and looking at their care plans so it is important that the nurses are fully focused and able to concentrate. A good healthy balanced diet is essential and may include foods like: slow carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals, vitamins, and water. Diet, …show more content…
There are many causes that can interfere with the nurse being able to exercise regularly and eating a balanced diet. For example: nurses working late, doing double shifts, getting no breaks due to patients needing continuous care and nurses finishing late which results in no eating or binge eating and no exercise due to exhaustion. A lot of nurses are said to have a disturbed eating pattern and there are many risks associated when this occurs. When a nurse fails to adhere to a balanced diet and participate in regular exercise they become more fatigue, they lack in energy because they feel weak. They also have an increasingly high blood pressure and may even result to depression or anxiety due to the amount of stress they’re under. A nurse can improve their lifestyle by sticking to a structured and well balanced diet. This includes eating fruit, vegetables, slow release carbohydrates, protein, fat and vitamins and minerals. It is also important that they try their best to eat something in between their long exhausting shifts in order to give them energy and keep them focused. Also in order to improve the lifestyle of a nurse they should try finding a hobby that interests them whether it is art, music or yoga. Classes such as yoga can release stress and provide the nurse with positivity energy and make them feel relaxed. Nurses are seen as role models for other humans as they should lead by example and stay away from the dangers that affect our bodies. This may include
The requirement of nursing school is that students are fully committed and students tend to forget about taking care of themselves and investing in comfortable footwear for labs and clinical. According to Anderson (2016) keeping a healthy eating habit is beneficial for nursing students as they may find themselves pulling all-nighters and spending endless amount of time in the library. Eating healthy food, sleeping, exercising regularly and investing in comfortable shoes is
When people think about nurses, many ideas come to mind. They think of the hideous old starched, white uniforms, a doctor’s handmaiden, the sexy or naughty nurse, or a torturer. The media and society have manipulated the identity and role of nurses. None of these ideas truly portray nurses and what they do. Nurses are with the patients more than the doctors. People do not realize how little they will encounter the doctor in the hospital until they are actually in the hospital. People quickly realize how important nurses are. Because nurses interact with their patients constantly, nurses are the ones who know the patients best.
Although many of the older nurses reported neglecting their own needs the study outlined several great self-care strategies for older nurses. These self-care strategies included; regular exercise, eating healthy, and taking time for yourself. Eating healthy is especially important for nurses because many nurses do not take time during their shifts to eat or drink water. One nurse stated “meal breaks, that’s got to be the biggest laugh out”, while yet another nurse said “I don’t drink water…basically, I have coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee” (Gabrielle, et al., 2008, p. 321). After implementing self-care strategies outlined in the study many nurses reported having decreased aches and pains, lower blood pressure, decreased weight and overall better mental and physical health. Nurses who engaged in regular physical activities also reported better eating and drinking habits. Sara, a midwife of 44 years, had type-2 diabetes, obesity, and osteoarthritis from lack of self-care. Sara adopted a regular exercise program, changed her diet and cut back on her work hours. After making these changes she stated, “I’ve lost 36 kilos, I go to the gym, I walk, I swim. I do all the things I said I
Another cause of nurse fatigue is lack of adequate sleep. First, working 12 hour shifts means that nurses only have 12 hours to sleep and also conduct other activities of life outside the workplace, while other professionals have 16 or more hours for rest and social activities. This is the reason for the few hours of sleep recorded by nurses with some opting to not sleep at all but take short naps. These are
Nurses spend most of their time taking care of their patients that they forget to be mindful of their own wellbeing. It is very important for nurses to take care of themselves because it is reflected through the care they provide to their patients. Sleep deprivation can increase the chances of a nurse miscalculating a dosage, which can be fatal to a patient’s life or injure themselves by forgetting proper body mechanics. Not having enough sleep and overworking themselves can be the cause for this simple mistake that could have been avoided through self-care. Having at least 8 hours a sleep a night is just one of the few ways a nurse can manage healthy living. A nurse’s work schedule can consists of mainly over
A fatigued nurse can lead to many errors and compromise the care given to a patient. Nurse fatigue has been found to increase depression. If a nurse has an altered mindset to begin with, they will not be able to take care of anyone else adequately. Nurse fatigue can also increase irritability. A nurse with increased irritability could lead the nurse to make irrational decisions. The nurse with sleep deprivation has an increased risk for error. A nurse is responsible for administering drugs. When a nurse is extremely tired, it could lead them to mess up the medications prescribed for the patient or to overlook reactions that the patient may experience from the medications. The nurse is also responsible for focusing on the care provided to the patient. A fatigued nurse could be too tired to notice crucial changes in the patient. The fatigued nurse will be affected in his or her performance. Nurse fatigue could also result in the nurses injuring themselves. Nurse fatigue could influence a nurse to make shortcuts and that can also endanger the nurse. For example, if a nurse has to lift a patient using a hoyer lift, but misjudges the situation because of lack of energy, the nurse could end up lifting the patient by herself and hurting her back. This is how nurse fatigue relates to the safety of the practicing nurse and patient

The physical strain on the body that a nurse endures in a 12-hour shift is exhausting. Most nurses in a hospital setting typically work 12-hour shifts. During a shift you are required to be on your feet taking care of multiple patients at once. Because the doctor and patients rely on their nurse so much, they rarely take a much needed break. They must find time to take a bathroom break, or grab a sip of water, or eat a protein bar. The stress the body endures during a shift can strain the body. Nurses can become extremely fatigued, and also dehydrated. There is also potential to be injured on the job. Nurses have to do a lot of heavy lifting like moving a patient. Nurses are at risk for injuring their back or shoulder if a patient moves the wrong way or falls on them. All of these factors affect the nurses overall health and will eventually cause burnout.
