It is unforunate that we live in a world where the media and government can influence personal opinions on acts of crimes and deviance. This essay will discuss the idea of a ‘moral panic’ and how it can influence the publics perception of crime. The paper will begin with a discussion on what a moral panic is, and then discuss Goode and Ben Yehuda’s four main types of a moral panic. Following this will be a summary on why the perceptions of crime have changed and the positive and negative effects of this change has on the public. Moral panic is seen as the “shorthand way of describing the complex process by which certain forms of behaviour or certain groups of people are highlighted and presented as a major threat to society” (Bradley & Walters, 2011, p. 76). These behaviours are highlighted by specific types of people including experts, editors, politicians, the police and most importantly, the media (Bradley & Walters, 2011). Moral panics are influencing the way the public views crime, for example, if someone was murdered, it would be in the news and newspapers nationwide. Then the media would typically bring up other homocides from the past and ones that have happened recently but didn’t make the front page news. Moral panic is “a condition, episode, person or group of persons emerges to become defined as a threat to societal values and interests and its nature is presented in a stylized and stereotypical fashion by the mass media; the moral barricades are manned by editors, bishops, politicians and other right-thinking people; socially accredited experts pronounce their diagnoses and solutions; ways of coping are evolved or resorted to; the condition then disappears, submerges or deteriorates and becomes more visible” (Cohen, 1973, p.9). This means moral panic is an exaggeration or distortion of some perceived deviant behaviour by the media. In contemporary context, moral panics are not just one-off events, “it is their reappearance that confirms their status as moral disturbances of any significant order” (Marsh and Melville, 2011, p.7). Basically moral panics are social issues that relate to real fears about a particular behaviour such as paedophilia due to the exaggeration of media influence.
It represents the collective fear of the society from the "other". I suggest that today moral panic is not simply a matter of exaggerated social problems, but it is a fear of losing control over the "other" and the fear of the truth about the "other". Moral panic intends to reinforce the boundaries between the "self" and the "other". My case study is the moral panic of pornography on the Internet.

Pop culture media, like Law and Order, has a way of showing people how crime is portrayed. Case (2013), mentions that past studies about the representation of crime in the media has increasingly shown fear to the public and portraying unrealistic standards of how crime is in the real world. Media likes to exaggerate how things truly are in the real world, which is why people believe what the media portrays. People will believe that everything they see in a television show can truly happen in the real world, which certain things can happen but not everything. If people end up believing in how the media portrays crime then people will be living in fear of their society being more violent than it actually is (Case, 2013).

In this essay, I aim to explore different theories as to why crime exists within society and how we as a society therefore construct it. The importance given to certain crimes in the daily newspapers and other media sources shows us proof to the fact that crime is a topic that has the public’s interest and is a focus of their worries (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2001).
