In 2010 the ASPCA (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) came out with a commercial that would shock the advertisement industry. The effectiveness of this commercial is proven, simply by watching the reactions of the commercial’s viewers. For those who have never seen the video it has a very sad and morose tone to it. The commercial begins with showing pictures and videos of suffering animals with the song “Angel” playing in the background. While this is going on the narrator of the commercial (Sarah McLachlen) is softly talking about the suffering and abuse that these unfortunate animals go through. Through many different rhetorical techniques the viewers are many times brought to tears after watching this
Throughout our lives we have most likely witnessed hundreds of commercials that try to persuade us to donate money. A great amount of advertisements exist to persuade their audiences to donate to a specific organization our cause. The ASPCA is an organization that works to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws, and share resources with shelters nationwide. The ASPCA has many different campaign commercials that all have a singular purpose. The ASPCA announcement featuring Sarah Mclachlan that vividly portrays images of many different animals, is probably the most well known of all of the ASPCA commercials.
Advertisers all have one goal in common, that is an ad that is catching to a consumer’s attention. In today’s fast paced society there are so many selling products and charities. As I exam the advertisement for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals (ASPCA), I will show how they use the pathos, ethos, and logos – also known as Aristotle’s Theory of Persuasion.
PETA, an animal rights organization, has been known over the past several decades to post racy ads. In June of 2013, PETA launched an ad with the purpose of getting its audience to go vegan. The ad is a photo of a toddler with a lit cigar in his mouth with the quote next to it, “You Wouldn’t Let Your Child Smoke. Like smoking, eating meat increases the risk of heart disease and cancer”. The ad included “Go vegan!” in the bottom right corner with the organizations logo next to it. PETA is trying to send a message to its viewers to stop eating animals. The attention drawing ad evokes an emotional response, contains logical reasoning and is from a credible source.
Throughout the commercial sick children and shown being given different tests and laying in hospital beds. By showing these images the audience feels a sense of fear, loss, pain, and grief, even though they do not personally know the children. By not donating the audience does feel responsible for these sick children potentially losing their lives. At the same time the commercial causes such negative feelings, it also provides positive ones such as hope and pride. By donating to St. Jude’s hospital a child’s life can be saved and that is because of you. This is effective for St. Jude’s because most people would rather feel positive feelings rather than negative, so they are more likely to call and donate to keep that positive feeling going. Also, ending the advertisement on a positive note by telling the audience “You can bring them that hope” the audience is drawn into pathos all over
First of all, the commercial has accomplished successfully of building its ethos (credibility). The ad is made by ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), a non-profit organization that receives monthly donations for saving animals from being abused or ignored. (Wikipedia) From ASPCA’s website, you can find its organizational structures, annual financial statements, policies and positions, etc. It provides a transparent way to process and broadcast organization resources. By doing this, for a person who is trying to donate, he/she can make sure the money is spent for a good reason.
Every day, companies present the people with advertisements everywhere they go. Advertisements have become very prevalent in today’s society nowadays focusing in on a negative connotation. Advertisement has become an effective way for producers to display their new products. In present day, they come in forms of billboards, flyers, e-mails, and even text messages. It is widely known that companies create advertisements to persuade people to buy specific products or goods; however, it is not widely known that advertisements can make a negative impact on today’s society. The companies manipulate people’s mind and emotions, swaying people by new promotions and therefore generating a strong desire to fit into the society, that causes them to make inessential expenditures. Advertisements pose a critical impact on the American culture.
I wish to thank the NJHS (National Junior Honor Society) for nominating me for my successful academic averages and other capabilities. I take pride in knowing that I am honest, respectful, and that I show courtesy towards others.I follow the rules and I am a responsible citizen. I have worked hard to keep my grades at a high level and I am thrilled to know that i have been recognized for this accomplishment. I wish to lead by example and will not follow another person’s bad influences, therefore my friends are people with the same successful goals that i have set for myself. To officially become a member of the NJHS would truly mean the world to me. This would mean that all my hard work has paid off and perhaps this would help me in the future.
When someone hears the song “In the Arms of an Angel” by Sarah MacLauchlan, the first thing that comes to mind is the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty) commercial. The commercial is produced by ASPCA, a non-profit organization, in attempt to receive monthly donations in order to save and prevent innocent animals from being abused and neglected. With the help of this commercial, the producers try to reach out to those generous enough to donate money to their cause, helping with medical treatment and food that is essential for the well-being of these animals to make them better. The ad uses real footage of unkempt animals in these shelters and on the streets with a distraught look upon their
Two of their most well-known examples of popular rhetoric are the use of television advertisements and their website. The first image seen in its commercials is an animal they are saving, so that the noticeable fixation on your screen is a mistreated puppy. Similarly, the ASPCA’s website organization, content, and layout are all formatted primarily to entice and encourage the public to donate money. Clearly, the ASPCA’s intended persuasive appeal is for whoever is watching or visiting the site to donate. After careful examination of both its television advertisements and website, one can see that the ASPCA knows how to rake in the cash by using guilt against its audience. The sole purpose of the organization’s commercials and website is to get its audience to support its cause through donations, not to educate you on animal abuse. Because the video makes such a strong emotional appeal, it more effectively targets people, especially women, who tend to be more susceptible to sentimental
One in fifty-six kids are abused and sixty-one percent of children are forgotten about (Dreyfus). Do you not like the ASPCA animal abuse commercial well there are kids out there just like those dogs and cats that you see in the commercial. There are parents out there that have kids at a young age and don’t take care of them. They neglect them and abuse them if they are throwing a fit or at older ages not listening to the parents. Or the parent is addicted to drugs or they are an alcoholic. I have learned that there a lot of people think that there should be classes that parents should take. The information that I have found has helped me even more believe that there should be classes for the parents. Personally I have some cousins that their
The first, and most prominent, reasoning behind the commercial is emotion, or pathos. An argument should include an emotional connection to the audience to make logic and credibility more humanizing. The two-minute video primarily includes clips of previously abused animals, the staff caring for them, and singer Sarah McLachlan talking about how the viewers can help. Reason one that the argument is effective in the use of emotion would be the use of animals. The clips used include dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens whimpering or looking “sad.” These were meant to evoke an emotion to the individuals, and hopefully ignite the compassion needed to donate to ASPCA. It gained popularity from the sadden reactions of people, and for good reason. To quote
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was the first human society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world. Henry Bergh, a man of great conviction and a tireless fighter for animals founded the ASPCA on April 10, 1866. Mr. Bergh believed that all animals are entitled to being treated kindly and respectfully at the hands of humans and should be protected under the law. The ASPCA’s mission, as stated by founder Henry Bergh in 1866, is “to provide effective means for the prevention of cruelty to animals throughout the United States. (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals [ASPCA], 2014, About us section) When Mr. Bergh founded the ASPCA, he and his volunteers spent tireless hours fighting for the rights of
We have all seen the ASPCA commercials with the poor starving and abused animals. You feel a sadness in your heart and wonder how anyone can inflict these types of atrocities on them. Maybe you donate money or time to help out these defenseless creatures. Now what if you found out that your favorite deodorant or lipstick is tested on animals. Would you discontinue using these products and look for a product that isn’t tested on animals or would you continue to use them and believe that it is necessary for your safety? Would you think about how horrendous the conditions these animals live in or how much pain is induced?
The Peta Ad is ineffective because it is trying to convince the reader to turn vegan but he's not giving a valid reason why since he is using child abuse as an example and he doesnt know the real meaning of it. For example in the Peta Ad it states, " Parents who allow children to eat meat are guilty of child abuse." This shows that they don't know the real meaning of child abuse because when you are being abused you are not happy but the children are happy eating meat. Child abuse is when they are harrassing the children and doing things against their own will but in this case they are eating what they like. Giving children meat is not child abuse because you are giving them what they are asking for, it would be child abuse if you do not feed
