College seems to be a constant battle for students to do well in classes and remain above water. It is as if students are attempting to figure out what mixture of coffee, sleep, and studying makes for a perfect college student. With so much pressure being put into getting a degree and going into professional schools after college, it would be a helpful tool for students to know what makes an individual more successful academically than the next. Resent research by Ackerman and Heggestad (1997) has suggested that individual differences such as personality and motivation can be used to explain not only variance in academic performance, but also the process by which traits influence examination scores. Motivation is a composed of four main components including academic self-efficacy, attributions, intrinsic motivation, and achievement goals (Pintrich, 2002). O’Neil, Goffin, and Gellatly (2010) have found that when test taking motivation is high students tend to perform better on exams increasing the rate of academic success.
However, even though personality traits have been correlated to motivation to predict academic success motivation, there is little research on the mutual relationship between conscientiousness and motivation in determining academic success. Therefore, in my research I will strive to understand this unique relationship . I hypothesis hypothesize that undergraduate students who score high levels of conscientiousness and demonstrate a high since sense of
A child's main focus in life has always been being successful in school in order to achieve many riches in adulthood. Many people have supported these children to reach this goal by preparing them for about two decades. In return, their family members expect them that these clueless kids return the favor by going to college. Some have put their immense effort beyond their reach, but unfortunately there is a vast majority of students that do not have what it takes both academically and emotionally to earn a college degree or to even meet their own personal standards. Although they received all the help they could get, their parents forget to even consider that what matters the most for these young adults to go to college is their own willingness
While being responsible for our academic success, prioritizing work to achieve goals can be valuable to students without a success driven mindset. Responsibility and action along with ethics help set the path for proper results and set standards for academic achievement. As I explore this new endeavor in my life, I will outline my failures, successes and the lessons I have learned along the way.
Extrinsic motivation is working on a task to receive a reward in the end. For students, this reward would be good grades and a high GPA. Non-traditional students had higher levels of intrinsic motivation, meaning they enjoyed what they where doing and were not just motivated by grades and GPA. Non-traditional students are ones that are financially independent and possibly working a full time job. (Author Name) concluded that the students interest in their major lead to the highest levels of motivation. Although this study focused heavily on motivation, it did not focus on actual GPA scores.
College students mostly get nervous about all the sudden work load that they face and may fail in many steps throughout their college life. They might end up needing help and professional advice on how to get good grades and survive their college. John Langan in “Three Keys to Doing Well in School” says (that) the three most important factors to a student’s success in college are attitude toward learning, good study skills and involvement with reading. Langan emphasizes on these three main points, sharing his opinion on how these keys are important and says that one should have much self-respect and determination to earn the reward by hard work rather than relying on luck. Furthermore, Writing and taking notes is another major key when it comes to enhancing study skills. Also, being organized and having a schedule setup for almost everything helps an individual to work on time and complete the assigned work ahead of time too. Reading is also an important step to better performance in school or college as it helps you think well, increases your vocabulary and helps you become a more successful person. These factors are some of the most important characteristics that a student should develop throughout his life to succeed in life as it helps build and strengthen the future of the student.

In college, predicting academic success is a difficult challenge facing institutions of higher education. Unfortunately, before completing degrees, majority of students leave. Andrew Carnegie once said, “Anything in life worth having is worth working for.” High academic achievement in college certainly requires a great deal of effort over an extended period of time and is undoubtedly worth having. However, students who have high levels of frustration intolerance are at particular risk of falling into patterns of procrastination. But those who are more willing to tolerate frustration in pursuit of academic achievement tend to have higher GPA’s. In most students, studying for exams, writing for papers, and engaging in other academic behaviors
During my high school years, I can confidently say I have excelled in my academic endeavours. This success is partially due to my desire to learn. I am always intrigued by the lessons and concepts that are at the core of assigned work. My passion for learning has facilitated my learning process; because I am usually interested in the material that is being taught, my ability to retain and understand information is heightened. My academic success is also due to my drive to do the best I can. Since grade nine, I have demanded excellence from myself in all academic subjects. I strived to perform to the best of my abilities in the first high school years so that I would adopt that habit early and take it with me through the senior high school years. Finally, my academic excellence
In order to academically succeed in college a student like myself should be able to be self-motivated. Motivation, from my own perspective, is known as a strong and irrespective force that helps me achieve what I want to aspire and overcome every academic obstacle that comes my way. This belief that I go by, is the key to success in my academic journey. I can recall several circumstances in which the possession of motivation was the deciding factor between my success and failure. Taking exams is one of the most prominent feature in which motivation is the key to succeeding. I recently received an "A" on an important exam in my Principle of Business class. The reason I performed well on the exam is because of the motivation I had to learn the new material for the exam. I prepared well for the test;
In learning my critical thinking traits, I have discovered that I need to get the facts together and evaluate them based on my ethical characteristics. This process of thinking has directed me to understand that things have to be understood and communicated correctly in order to paint the picture of information that I want others to see or hear. This plays an important part in my professional life. When preparing for presentations or work reports, all data needs to be analyzed and
Understandably, student motivation and academic preparation are not fully revealed by a student’s transcripts, I believe I have exhibited a strong passion for learning and avid curiosity which has served me well in academic career and I am geared to learn and to understand more.
There are so many elements that go into academic excellence in graduate school. However, a person can overcome any obstacle that hinders them from giving it their all by merely setting goals and following them. As for myself, the best possible way that I could manage my life stressors as well as my time management is to apply what I already know. If I could keep my mind focused through setting academic goals for success and sticking to them with skills that I have developed for myself in the past I could easily become not only a great writer, but also
Determination is another key to being successful in college because having something in mind will make you want to accomplish it. For example, in college you want to get all A’s through the semester, that’s one selves determination to get those A’s at the end of the semester. One will have to put their full effort in every class to get their goal reached. In the article True Grit by Angela Lee Duckworth and Lauren Eskreis-Winkler there is an example of “finalists in the Scripps National Bee, we found that grittier children completed more hours of deliberate practice, operationalized as the study and memorization of word spellings and word roots in solitude” (20). For these spelling bee participants their determination was to spell the word correctly and winning. They spent hours of studying to be prepared for the National Spelling Bee contest. A college student should have a determination set so through the semester they can step by step get it accomplish from “I can’t do it” up to “Yes, I did
In their seminal piece, How College Affects Students, Pascarella & Terrenzeni (1991), states that “students’ grades are probably the single most revealing indicator of his or her successful adjustment to the intellectual demands of a particular college’s course of study" (388). Grades are significantly influenced by study habits, motivation, organization, and level of effort as seen in (Capella, Wagner & Kusmierz, 1982; Culler & Holahan, 1980; Astin, 1971b, 1975b). Grades tend to “reflect not only requisite intellectual skills but also desirable personal work and attitudes” (Pascarella, et. al, 388). There is evidence to support grades of undergraduates success will lead to the student earning a bachelor’s degree and future graduate degrees.
The purpose of this study was to test how choice, cognition, emotion and motivation affect the students’ performance. GPA was selected to be a specific form of academic performance. We predicted that all the four mediators had positive relationship with students’ GPA. In this study, high GPA group perform well
Academic success could never be fully measured by degrees alone, but it can include a person’s well-being as well as their mind and certain characteristics about a person that make them unique. This success can be achieved in different ways by these different people with different strengths, but there is the same ultimate goal in sight of each and every student enrolled in college at some point. However, this goal of being successful in not only school but in life, can sometimes turn out to be the opposite of how we plan. Of course, a student can achieve success by earning degrees and still fail in life. Academic success can also be a huge constituent to a students vocational calling in college as young students make a transition into adulthood.
