The ability to think for oneself is a fundamental aspect humans need to be successful in life. And academic writing is a way to develop this ability, and is why it should still be valued in society. Because academic writing is used frequently, they hold a lot of power. Especially in this generation, since comments and opinions are often heard of in social platforms and can easily influence a person; however, even without the use of social platforms, academic writing still causes a lot of influence and can even help a person find what type of career they want to do. But, academic writing doesn’t often produce such a negative impact; rather it can also produce something extraordinarily groundbreaking. Groundbreaking like Albert Einstein’s “The Meaning of Relativity.” “The Meaning of Relativity” is a collection of four Stafford Little Lectures Einstein delivered in 1921 at Princeton University and published by this university’s press a year later. These lectures describe Einstein’s theory of relativity and in it he states, “How are our customary ideas of space and time related to the character of our experiences?” (Einstein, 1). This is the ending sentence of his first paragraph and it invokes the readers to ponder on this. Afterwards, he goes on to explain the two main points on this theory, which is special relativity and general relativity. However at this time, Einstein's ideas was often criticized by other physicists because there were many that were traditionalists and only believed in classical physics (in which objects need to be physically forced to go into motion) and his theory of relativity contradicted this. Not only that, but there were also the uprising of Nazi-propaganda, and because Einstein was a successful German Jewish physicist he was an obvious target for their hatred. For example, Levy's article isn't just meant for psychologist and sociologist, but it can also be a beneficial read for the greater female community that prompts reflection and reconsideration about how women should appear and act in society. After reading and discussing Grescoe's article about how different cultures and societies view drug-use, I realized that academic writing doesn't necessarily have to be about an academic topic like stem-cell research or life on Jupiter, but it can also be about a pressing social issue that needs to be addressed within the community as a whole. Ostensibly, it is still part of the English language, yet it often sounds so foreign in both vocabulary and style that it has to be learnt by even those most proficient at English, as though it is a distinct language. There are many different types of writing, and ways in which we use writing. We can utilize writing for entertainment, business, and academic purposes. Each type of writing and the ways in which we use them, has their own benefits. Many people are frequently unaware of the benefits and importance of the different types of writing. Therefore, they do not take learning about the different types of writing seriously. For instance, many students do not take learning about academic writing seriously. They just go through the motions of writing to earn a grade because they do not realize the benefits or importance of academic writing. Some things that students are unaware of that keep them from taking academic writing seriously is, what a major form of communication it is, how substantial a part it plays throughout someone’s life, and how it can help them in their professional careers.
Imagine students who have recently graduated from high school. These students, aided by educators, have improved their writing skills as well as their vocabulary, in the two to four years of college or university. Struggling to learn and follow the steps of the academic writing process, they finally graduated successfully. After college graduation, society expects them to be the next generation of well-prepared workforce. Now, in the dream career, these students leave their books aside and just begin to communicate. The writing process is forgotten, and the writing communication is not related to the academic writing anymore. In fact, students have seen academic writing as something for college purposes, and now, they begin a new writing process of unfamiliar patterns. Thus, the laborious process of writing, often stressful, causes doubt in its practical use in the workplace. To fulfill this lack of practicality, educators must combine academic writing with effective writing practices at work.
If you asked me why I write I would say because I need to. For most students this is the case, we write because it is required for school. Throughout high school we were taught to focus on spelling, grammar, and structure but when we need to create a piece of academic writing it can make the process more challenging if we rely only on these. There are other strategies which weren’t taught as early in our education though, such as word choice, simplicity, revision, and finding our angle, which can vastly improve our writing. We tend to focus on these strategies in the order in which they were taught, but to effectively write academic papers we need to use the strategies we are less familiar with.
I remember when I first asked my friend Tyron how his first college English course was for him and I’ll never forget his answer. He went on and on about how much he hated the course and how much he disliked writing, but I remember his last statement, he said throughout the stress and the pain the course without a doubt made him a better writer. Name and Tyron are complete opposites, he hates the course and I on the other hand love the course. It is my personal belief that the benefits of academic writing far outweigh the disadvantages. There can be some hindrances, but only if you do not review and edit your documents.
