The Importance of Active Listening, Positive Verbal Communication and Understanding Level of Communication with Different Clients.
Communication is an essential skill that involves the ability to exchange our attitude, thoughts and feelings through written, verbal and non-verbal interaction with each other (Crisp, Potter, & Perry, 2013). In a wide range of workplaces, these interactions are primarily used to develop professional relationships with clients. To discuss the importance of effective communication in workplaces, I had the opportunity to interview a security guard who uses effective communication skills on a daily basis to communicate with his clients. The central effective communication skills that were established from this interview included active listening, having a positive verbal communication and knowing the level of communication required depending on different clients. All these important skills were then put into the context of my future workplace as a nurse in order to emphasize the importance of effective communication skills in workplaces.

I interviewed Jamie Symons who has been working as a security guard at Gallipoli barracks Enoggera for 12 months. The interviewee’s main role composed of communicating with clients directly on a daily basis to allow them access to the army base and also communicating technologically and verbally with other members in the workplace.
