In 1993, the average age for identification of a hearing impairment in the United States was approximately three years old (NIH, 1993). Consequently, the first three years of a child’s life are most important for speech and language development and, therefore, are crucial years for detecting hearing loss. Without an ability to hear, children lack proper development of speech and language. Therefore, a lack of efficacy in previous infant hearing screening protocols fueled innovation of universal newborn hearing screenings. These universal hearing screening methods were the first to address means of screening all infants born in hospitals. This paper will discuss: (a) limitations of previous protocols which paved a path for new protocols and
Scientists and doctors have been researching different ways to help them becoming hearing again. If you have a hearing impairment, you might be able to try cochlear implants. A cochlear implant is “a device that provides direct electrical stimulation to the auditory nerve in the inner ear” (ASHA). Cochlear implants cannot always help. It all depends on the severity of the hearing impairment or deafness. It is also very good to work with early intervention services. They will provide services to help learn sign language, information of doorbell lights, and ways to make phone

However, I would feel comfortable and prepared administering a hearing screening after I've practiced a few times. I have performed a hearing screening on classmates during undergrad and recently I observed my clinical supervisor administer a hearing screening during an
I’ve enjoyed reading your post. The universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) programs have been very instrumental in identifying hearing loss at an early age and creating intervention measures for children that suffer from hearing loss (Walker et al., 2014). In the US, the UNHS programs are the routine procedure for newborn screening (Walker et al., 2014). Even with those good measures in place, some newborns do not have access to those resources (Walker et al., 2014). Some children develop hearing loss at later ages, viewed as “postnatal onset hearing loss” (Walker et al, 2014, p.117). These factors may also play a role in the case that we read. So I agree that the nurses should have completed an auditory assessment of the child’s hearing

Hearing loss is common among the older generation, yet many times seniors with age-related hearing loss do not realize they have trouble hearing. They do not realize they are turning the television or radio up louder, they do not know that they are talking louder or mumbling, and they do not know just how many times they have to ask for clarification or a repeated sentence when talking to people.
The critical period of language development is from birth until age 3 but language can still be acquired up until about age 13 depending on the student. After this period the student will have a harder time acquiring language and will hit a ceiling on how much of the language they will be able to learn. Many children who are Deaf/ Hard of hearing are not exposed to language at an early age since they often have hearing parents causing them to have language development delays (Knoors & Marschak 2014). These language delays are normally present since the children do not have access to being immersed in the language and just mocking the elders in their family due to their hearing loss (Knoors & Marschak 2014). To prevent Deaf/ Hard of hearing
Dr.Karen Mills came to speak to our class about her job of being an audiologist. She came and told us about what could cause hearing loss or what could prevent it. She made excellent points about how many older men and women who have been through world wars have lost most and almost all hearing because the guns and bombs and all these load objects made their nerve in their ear damaged or ruined. Older men and women of wars wish they would have protected their ears in anyway because now they have no hearing at all. So protect your ears!!!!!!!
The cost of hearing aids is a big question these days as growing numbers of baby boomers are addressing hearing loss. The simple answer is that it depends on the kind of hearing loss you have and your lifestyle.
