Becoming a social worker has always been my dream as child. I do believe that what influenced me were parents and my childhood. I grew up in a home where everyone was welcome. I remembered my mother made sure who ever that came to our home no matter the time and even unannounced must eat something before they leave. It was tradition l grew up with. I learned to help people at my early age. For me becoming a social worker was all about helping people no matter who they are and where they are from. While in Nigeria, I used to volunteer at the orphanage which was made up different children and workers. I also volunteered with an organization at catholic organization where l had an opportunity of working with people from different ethnic (tribe) and faith. In this oraginzation l do remember clearly we had non-catholics, and muslims working with us. When it was time to for catholic to attend mass, the muslims and non-catholics were excused and we as catholics would attend mass. It was also about helping women start up their business to support their families. I was never in the position where l had to question if l should help someone because of their ethnicity or racial heritage. My moral values or beliefs taught me to help anyone who is need. But unfortunately, l could not achieve my dream while in Nigeria. But relocating here about 6 years ago l decided to go after my dream and l went back to school become a social worker. Moving to America showed me a different
I chose social working as my career because many other people go through tough situations and have a difficult time talking to relatives or friends to help them through a tough situation. I thought of becoming a social worker so I can have the ability to change the lives of others. Social work is one of those careers you can truly make a difference in people’s lives. I want to become a social worker because life isn’t about just helping yourself it’s about helping others as well, which is what social workers do for a living. Child and family social workers protect children and families in need of assistance. Many families and children don’t feel comfortable talking to just anyone about obstacles they have faced in their lives which is why
All my life my parents have taught me the value of helping others. Having different experiences and growing up in an atmosphere where the need of others were put before our own, led me to have a desire to be a social worker. Believing that being a social worker involves many special skills, as an example one of those that u need to interact with people from different cultures and principles than me. For as long as I remember I have had the desire to become a social worker inspiring people and developing people that will drive me to dedicate my excitement and dedication to do what is important in this dream job a reality.
My interest in social work developed during college. I always had a interest in helping others in one way or another. I joined a sorority in college, Delta Sigma Theta, which is based off of community service. During the week I would volunteer to tutor children that were struggling in certain areas of school. I would talk to these children and explain to them the importance of education and try to influence them as much as possible to try their hardest in everything that they do. I would also go to nursing homes, with other member of our
My passion for social work originated in my senior year of undergraduate school. During my senior, year my single, adoptive mother had passed. A couple of months following her death, I found myself homeless. I had just turned 18 and I was a jobless high school student sleeping from couch to couch. During this time of my life there was one individual who supported me. The high school social worker was a strong support for me. I didn’t have any family support and thus fell on hard times. A college professor once told me that people who choose social work as a major do it because that had someone in their life who influenced them to become a social worker. If that person wasn’t in my life, my personal growth would have differed completely. It was at this point that I realized it only takes one caring individual to hugely impact someone 's life for the better. To be that person to someone else is my highest aspiration in life.
This is where not just deciding to become a social worker, but really wanting to help others, has made the biggest impact with me. I did not decide in one night that I wanted to become a social worker, much as Rosa Parks did not decide in one second to take a stand during the beginning of the Civil Rights
For a long time now I have always aspired to be a social worker, I have worked hard at my education to make this possible. I would like to work in a field helping and caring for others. In everyday life individuals go through problems, which make life difficult to them to live. The saying ‘a service is only as good as the person who delivered the service’, makes me want to be that person and deliver good service to people who need it.
For me, social work is much more than helping people. It is more than being the middle person between the client and the agency; it is being a game changer in every aspect (community, families, oneself). When I think of social work, I think about being and impact into someone’s life in the most positive way possible. Growing up, I learned what it means to serve whole-heartedly at a young age; therefore, serving other is all I know how to do. For this reason, I have chosen to pursue a career that will give me the opportunity to serve and be a blessing into someone’s life.
Being a social worker means understanding and always learning about human behavior like here in this case. Alexis will face many obstacles. This will be difficult for her to adapt to her every day social living, like when she interacts with others. This will influence her during her transition on what her first steps to take are in her big change. Furthermore seeing how this change will do in her life, in addition to maintaining a stable healthy relationship with her family. Throughout the rest of her life, her social interactions will continuously be reshaping for her ongoing social interactions with others. This would be directing to the way that she will now present herself. For example, the way she dresses and appears as a male is the new
I was in grade 10 when I thought of becoming a social worker. As social worker practitioner the fields that interest me to work in is domestic violence and child abuse because I want to make change to the society. Also Mahatma Gandhi was my major inspiration through this quote “Be the change that you wish to see in the world”. Than an idea came to me, why not involve my contribution to the wide variety of communities. My communication with school counsellors and social workers has impacted my choice of desiring to study social work. I realised that if I have had a chance of seeing a social worker when I was young, things would have been much easier and less stressful. I want to provide opportunities that I did not encounter to other people. This essay will reflect my past experience, motivation and why I want to be a social worker, values, beliefs and theory of practice.
My academic and career goals would be attending the University of Louisville to become a Social Work major. I would like to become a successful Social Worker to be able to help out children and families in need. When I was younger, I had a couple of social workers in my life. One helped our family, and one didn't, but they both left a lasting impression on me. Social Work is something that I feel passionate about and becoming a great social worker is a big career goal of
As a young kid I always was very compasante to help people, always wanting to be a positive influence and be the light in someone's life. As I got older my parents started to do foster care and we had one woman that came to our house every time we got a another child, she would come in and check up on the kid make sure that the child had what he/she needed. That's when I realized social work was for
My vision of the social work field is being able to help people in need and being the person that people can look back on and remember as a huge help in time of need. I think my core values and beliefs will help me be an effective social worker and help me succeed in this field. It is in my belief that a person should never be knocked down when they are going through hardships, and rather empowering them. I also believe that not everyone could be a social worker because it takes a certain kind of empathetic and self-aware person. I truly believe that my upbringing has humbled me to understand and not be judgmental of people’s issues since I’ve seen a lot in my short twenty-one years.
Overall, I really enjoyed this experience and felt like by the end of it I learned so much what it can be like not only being a social worker, but also being a client. At the start of this assignment I had a lot of different expectations. Initially I thought it was just going to go terribly wrong and that I would get everything wrong. Then I got even more nervous knowing that I should not be doing any type of preparing before the interview and instead just wing the whole interview. My expectations for during the session was that I would forget about everything I’ve learned in this class so far and just fail miserably. Before looking at the video after the session I thought I could have definitely done a better job and that it wasn’t good. Typically, I am not the type of person who likes to take pictures or videos of themselves, so I definitely felt weird and uncomfortable being videotaped and watching that video.
As the saying goes, “Our children are our future” and who you are as a child can determine who you can be later on in life. It is important for a child to be in a safe, comfortable and loving environment during its development so that the child can have the full advantage to become the best he can be in his future. My future career as a social worker will ensure just that. I chose this profession because of my own history. Growing up, I’ve had my share of social workers in my house. I experienced them as people who helped my family during a hard time. This is a career where I can fight for people’s rights. I will also be able to protect
A sociology major has many things to offer in aspects of careers. Such concentrations can include social work, community and youth work, counseling and therapy, and education. For me in particular, I am focusing more on the social work aspect of a sociology major. Having a social work concentration means you having a focus on certain core values. Some of these values include: service, social justice, integrity, and dignity of the individual.
