Honestly, I wasn’t sure how I got as far as I did in this Geology Bee, but I felt pretty good about it. During my sixth grade in Florida, my school district held a Geology Bee. As far as I knew it was the first one in school history; our middle school had been open for a little under 5 years. They didn’t tell us about the Bee qualifications until after we took the preliminaries. The first task they gave us was a 50 question long geology test in our geo class. It wasn’t that hard, typical geology things like ocean names, continents, and countries. I thought of it as another boring test but, boy was I wrong! About two and a half months later, in early November my geo teacher told us about the Geology Bee and who would be apart of it. To my

The Modesto Bee is a California daily paper, established in 1884 as the Daily Evening News and distributed constantly as a day by day under an assortment of names. Preceding its buy by Charles K. McClatchy and McClatchy Newspapers in 1924, it converged around the same time with the Modesto News-Herald, embracing that name as a major aspect of a combination. In 1933 it changed its name to the Modesto Bee and News-Herald, and in 1975 truncated the name on its masthead to the Modesto Bee. Its present proprietor, is the relative firm, McClatchy Company, an American daily paper organization.
As the appointed state geologist, Dr. Eugene Allen Smith spent his career surveying and studying Alabama’s unique geology. Dr. Smith is credited with the creation of the Alabama geological map in 1927. As a professor at the university, Dr. Smith could only do his research in the summer. During the summer, Smith and his team would travel across the state surveying the land with the same tools modern geologists use today. This map became crucial to Alabama’s industrial development, as that it displayed the rocks and minerals available throughout the state. This map’s accuracy allowed for Alabamians to exploit the earth of it’s minerals like iron and marble. Dr. Smith understood the importance of Alabama’s natural history, and petitioned the
Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees and Rascal Flatts "I'm Movin' On", both adequately demonstrate that a childhood of guilt can result in difficulty forgiving oneself and others. Overcoming inner conflicts as well as finding a place of belonging and contentment is a result that comes with self-forgiveness. The Secret Life of Bees is a story of a young girl named Lily Owens who, throughout the novel, faces immense obstacles. This novel focuses on the blurred memory Lily has of the death of her mother. In the novel, the reader learns that Lily was only a young child during the death of her mother and her emotionally abusive father, T. Ray, often tells her that this death was all her fault. T. Ray implements the idea that Lily was the one to who had accidentally shot her mother with a gun which causes her to grow up living with the guilt and shame of this traumatic event that took a very valuable life from her. As the plot intensifies, Lily and her strong-willed black caretaker, Rosaleen, decide to escape T. Rays sadistic tendencies and abusive behavior. After deciding to run away from T. Ray, Lily soon finds the Boatwright sisters who had a strong connection with Lily's mother before she died. While meeting the Boatwright sisters, Lily says, "I felt like she knew what a lying, murdering, hating person I really was. How I hated T. Ray, and the girls at school, but mostly myself for taking away my mother" (Kidd 71). This quote shows the destructive effect of being blamed
It was a normal, peaceful Wednesday morning in Tuscon, Arizona. Four landscapers were called to tend to a yard for a ninety-year-old man. One of them turned on his lawnmower. Almost immediately, the vibration of its engine had disturbed an enormous hive of approximately 800,000 Africanized bees nearby. The noises appeared to be a threat to the colony. As a result, thousands of them swarmed the men, injected their venom, and clogged their orifices up, such as their ears and nostrils. There were so many bees that one of the first responders had described the sky getting dark from the flock, although it was sunny out. From this attack, one man died and another received one hundred stings. This one of the many examples
Ah Christmas/Winter. The time of the year marked by the sound of joyous carols , cheerful talk of holiday plans, skating, candy canes, turkeys, family dinners, christmas sale signs plastered in front of almost every store, jesus coming down from the heavens, crappy nativity art and the general feeling of togetherness. But also as not being recognized by most people the one time of year when bee colonies are suppose to begin to healthily dwindle in numbers. As part of of an healthy ecological cycle, many wild & domesticated bee populations decline a bit in number during the winter season only to revive themselves later in the spring/summer, but that hasn’t been the case for many years. Ever since 1998 beekeepers have noticed significant drops in bee populations, throughout all seasons. In 2011, Canada saw
How did you apply knowledge you’ve learned in this geology class while you toured the show?
Most of the time you will find, that water with a little bit of honey in it, tends to taste a whole lot better than blood. In the beautifully composed piece of literature, The Secret Life of Bees, we follow the struggles of Lily Owens, as she realizes the true meaning of family and the transcendent power of love. The brilliant author behind this artwork, Sue Monk Kidd, brings forth the hardships of a motherless child with an abusive father, and the Negro community of 1964. I highly recommend this book to any individual that has any, if even the slightest, spark of curiosity within them, to understand the hardships and racial conflict that took place in a time where the abuse and discountenance of a human being was of the norm. This book has

The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne stands as one of the most famous works in the history of American literature. Set in Puritan Boston during the mid-1600’s, the renowned tale presents the story of a young, beautiful woman, Hester Prynne, who commits adultery against her husband, Roger Chillingworth, who was presumed dead. Due to her pregnancy, Hester is forced to admit her sin. After giving birth to a daughter, named Pearl, Hester is forced to stand on a scaffold in the center of town for three hours and endure heckling from the townspeople. Furthermore, she must wear a scarlet letter “A” that stands for “Adulteress” for the rest of her life. In the events to follow each major character shows glimpses of an evil nature that drives their stories. In The Scarlet Letter author Nathaniel Hawthorne weaves the theme of evil into the lives of Roger Chillingworth, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Pearl Prynne.
In this overview, Davis provides lots of issues that Americans dealt with in the south in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He detailedly explains the social segregation regarding education, living areas and communities. Davis acknowledges the problematics of voting rights throughout all of America and touched upon the civil rights activists and legacies left behind by Martin Luther King Jr. This article is relevant to The Secret Life of Bees because of the realistic events that happened in the novel where black characters were separated in terms of eduction and the segregation of living in different community. Black Characters in the book attended all black schools and were denied many jobs and opportunities that were only available for the whites. Also,
Sadly, because president Obama has done such a poor job as president, you won't see another black president for generations!
George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm share a very important theme and common elements that shape the idea of an Orwellian society. Orwellian is widely described as a society in which the liberties of all are diminished due to powerful rule. Orwell conveys the theme of “Many believe that man’s actions result from his free will, the presentation/perception of what is fact, remains dominant over society 's actions.” through parallel elements of repression of information, fear propaganda, and language.
Honey bee foragers perform waggle dances to inform other foragers in the hive about the location, presence, and the odor of beneficial food sources and new hive sites. The aim of the study in review was to investigate how the characteristics of waggle dances for natural food sources and environmental factors affect dance follower behavior. Due to the assumption that food source profitability tends to decrease with increasing foraging distance, a hypothesis that the attractiveness of a dance, measured as the number of dance followers and their attendance, decreases with increasing distance to the projected food location was formed. In addition to the hypothesis, it was assumed that time of year and dance signal noise or the variation in
This semester Geology 1110 has easily been one of my favorite classes. I have loved having Dr. Brock-Hon as my professor simply because of her passion and enthusiasm for the subject. I also really respect her because she understands that for most of us geology is not our major. The class and material covered I thought was going to be boring, but I have actually found it really interesting. I have even started to notice certain rocks and minerals out side of class. This semester I have not missed any class periods for this class. I actually enjoy this class a lot and listening to Dr. Brock-Hon, so I always want to come to class. However, I have been late to class a few times because of the location of my class before this one. I have another class that gets out at 10:50 and is located
