Leadership, is a complicated and dynamic process. Not only does it require understanding your role as a leader, but also the job as a whole along with the jobs of those under you. The most important aspect of being an effective leader is understanding yourself and the people you lead. Putting the needs of your followers first is the foundation of a good leader, if you can make your followers feel safe and cared for, they will be loyal and excited to work for someone that they know has their best interests at heart. Throughout this quarter there have been several things that I have learned and can apply in the future, first off there are the concepts and skills learned in class, then leadership approaches that I learned from readying our book and lastly how I plan to implement what I have learned to continue to grow as an effective leader.
Throughout this quarter, we have discussed many things in the classroom; the ideas that have really stuck with me are the 5 stages of group development along with using games to facilitate team building in a safe environment. The stages of group development are forming, storming, norming, performing and later adjourning was added to the list of stages. Understanding these stages is very important to leading a group. As a leader, knowing how people with in groups interact based on were you’re at in the group development process is critical to your job as a leader. By knowing what stage your group is in, you are able to step in as a leader
The present case study outlines the importance the leadership skill and identifies it as the most sustainable competitive edge in a progressively more competitive and boundary less business world (Hoch and Dulebohn, 2013). The case study on performance coaching with reference to the role of Darcy Gallagher gives the opportunity to comprehend the qualities and skills that need to be nourished to become an effective leader. The kingpin of the case study is the important elements of competency that affect the leadership outcomes and are influenced by the individual characteristics of the leader as well. The main purpose of the Coaching Performance to be conducted at Elmwood is to develop responsiveness to coaching facilities that are available in the daily work routine and aids the mangers to identify the problems of the members, the prompt responses to address their problems and add to the contribution made for long term career growth of the leaders as well as their subordinates.
The importance of effective leadership and its impact on improving student achievement are evident in today’s schools (Leithwood, Louis, Anderson, and Wahlstrom, 2004). While the school principal is traditionally thought to be the school leader, Glickman (1989) proposes that “the principal of successful schools is not the instructional leader but the educational leader who mobilizes the expertise, talent, and care of others” (p. 8). Lumpkin, Claxton, and Wilson (2014) contend that helping “each school fulfill its mission and energize and expand the professionalism and professional contributions of teachers, the expertise of all teachers, especially teacher leaders, is needed” (p. 59). Teachers directly impact student learning, and
This week explored and learned that there are desirable leadership traits to acquire, that becoming a leader can be a conscious process and that being a leader also means to owe respect and have a responsibility to others.
With any course, especially one with a focus as broad as leadership, the material covered may include a range from useful to impractical. It is impossible to learn the skills necessary of an effective leader completely out of a book, it takes the application of them to understand. The development of leadership is vital to successfully moving forward in any career, so it would be beneficial to cultivate these skills academically.
This leadership course has taught me to the importance of leadership and what it means to be a leader. That leadership is something that is learned and developed over time. To set goals and encourage those who are involved in accomplishing the goal. Being a leader more than just having follower, but to have enthusiasm, courage, humility, and integrity. This course have also helped me understand how to not only apply leadership to my personal life but to the working atmosphere.
A leader must be able to move quickly from one agenda to another. A leader must be able to inspire a person or a group of people to want to do their best. A definition of leadership can be, “A relationship through which one person influences the behavior of other people” ( Mullins, p. 904 ). One of the biggest problems that a leader in any organization has to deal with is change. Leaders have to be versatile and willing to make tough decisions in today’s economic climate. We will analyze what it takes to be a successful leader and how to manage the people around you for the best results. Asking questions
Don’t tell anyone else about this. Keep it to yourself. I am about to let you in on a secret about effective leaders. They are “sneaky.” Before I tell you, please keep in mind the context that these are outstanding leaders who work hard, commit themselves to personal development, and get the job done. They are anything but lazy. But they are “sneaky.” Here is how;
One of the biggest lessons learned from this course is that to be an effective leader, you must have a diverse skillset. I’m not sure if there is any one magical component or characteristic in being a great leader. One influence during my review of the literature was that; although easier for some, I see leadership as something we must continually improve upon. This is in contrast to my belief during my first day of class, when I thought leaders just
To be an effective leader there are certain things you need to master and understand very well. A few of them were discussed in the book The Leader’s Code by Donovan Campbell and those are the ones I am discussing today. The topics are mission, humility, excellence, kindness, discipline, courage, wisdom, and virtue and the servant leader. These are all key to successful leadership.
Leadership roles have taught me many things throughout my primary school education. I have had a few leadership roles throughout my education including New Tech Ambassadors and National Honors Society. The most valuable lessons I have learned include that of patience, persistence, and austerity. I have learned that people need you to continue and press them and continue to help and lead; to be persistent in your leadership helps those who follow you. Leadership has taught me to have patience. Though, not to be lax. You must still be persistent. Lastly, to be respected as a leader it is best to be stern but still approachable. An austere presence helps lead the best teams throughout tough situations.
To be the leader I foresee in three to five years, I will need to understand how to apply my strengths and how to develop my weaknesses of my leadership behaviors. The true measure of my future success will be how I apply these learned concepts in my work center and unit. I would expect to see the direct result within myself, how my subordinates grow and how my peers view me as a leader. Lastly, the concepts learned will help me understand leadership’s vison, so that I can articulate them down to the lowest levels. To start this journey, I must ensure I have the proper foundation for being a great leader.
The basic premise for leadership is the process of influencing other people to follow your lead in order to accomplish a goal. It is about the relationship between the leader and the followers. A good leader tries to motivate people to bring about positive changes revealing a common objective without using coercion or manipulation. Leadership is not about control, but permitting interaction and communication between the leader and the individual followers. With empowering others, leaders build a foundation of collaborative thinking and encourage an atmosphere of personal involvement; a leader can strengthen the respect and loyalty of his or her followers. Leaders can affect this process by applying their own personal characteristics, such
When asked to envision myself in a future leadership role, the first thing that comes to mind is my future self as a first class midshipman, simply because that will be the first actual role I will get to assume. Exactly what billet I would hold is hard to say, but I do not believe the position is all that important. What is important, I feel, is how you treat those around you and those under you. However, for the sake of writing, I will assume I will be a squad leader. Throughout this course, we have discussed multiple parts of leadership that are central to being an effective leader. While each part we have studied is different, they all have the same idea: being an effective leader for your people. I will best be prepared to succeed by putting to practice these different parts and focusing on their development for the future. Specifically, those leadership traits I would aim to develop are the ability to reflect better and servant leadership.
To be an effective leader, means to impact and organized group with their activities of goal setting and reaching success or by giving influence in a situation to accomplish a single goal or multiple goals. To be able visualize the bigger picture and being able to produce a plan of action and reach a goal, is the visionary mission (Liu, 2010). A key component to being effective as a leader is to can make decisive decision making skills Liu, 2010). A way to build relationships or enhance them is to give mutual rewards (Liu, 2010). Effective communication whether that be verbal, non-verbal, or even writing is a quality that makes a better leader (Liu, 2010). The ability to be able to convince people to do what you want is to have the power of influence (Liu, 2010). There are values that makes a person who they are, just as there are qualities that makes an effective leader such as, visionary mission, decisive decision making, mutual rewards, effective communication, and power of influence.
