I serve in the military where healthy is required because if you are overweight or underweight that can affect you on the battlefield and could not only harm you but it could harm the soldiers around you. In the military the way they measure what are weight is supposed to be is measured by are height. For myself I am 76in/6 foot 4. The most I can weigh is 212LBS. Now you will see a lot of soldiers fail there weight stander due to a lot of reason. The Army sees a lot of females fail there weight standards. The Army will then measure your Body Fat Percentages, for males they will measures the necks and the stomach three times All three of those numbers are calculated together and give your body fat percentage. Now if you fail your body fat
The Army’s circumference measuring is the only way authorized to determine a soldier’s body composition. For males it is used by measuring the circumference of the neck and waist and for females it is the waist, neck and hips. Based on soldiers’ height and age their body composition is calculated and compared to a predetermined chart. Many service members including leaders disagree with this method of determining body composition stating it is outdated and inaccurate; however, there are many benefits to using this method as well. This method is beneficial being in the military because it is cost effective, easy to administer, and the least time consuming of most of the other options out there. This way of measuring can be considered inaccurate. It does not directly reflect the body composition of the person being measured especially for individuals who participate in
Attention Step: How many of you all know of someone who is overweight? How many of you all know of someone who is dead because of weight problems? Obviously, a serious factor that is going on across the United States is obesity. According to The Gale Encyclopedia of Fitness written by the authors Rosalyn Carson-DeWitt and William Atkins, the definition of obesity means that it is a health condition where an excessive amount of body fat is inside the human body. This excessive body fat can cause health related issues including illness, disability, and worst of all, death (Carson-DeWitt and Atkins 615).
Society today has distorted what a healthy physique actually looks like. It tells you, if you don’t have muscles bulging from under your skin then you are out of shape. And that if you are overweight you are just ugly. Another false concept is that if you are overweight you’re lazy or not self disciplined (Bordo 2). There are so many factors that have to be accounted for when evaluating someone’s weight. To assume that someone is lazy or weak because they are overweight, is ignorant. Many people are deceived into thinking that obesity is terrible like a sin. In her article Susan Bordo gives an example of a study taken where children chose obesity to be more uncomfortable or embarrassing than dismembered hands or facial deformities when shown
Looking for an interesting article to read for this week’s journal assignment, the article “The Hidden Dangers of ‘Skinny Fat’” by Sifferlin (2014) caught my eye from Time.com. The article basically says that we are focusing too much on weight as guide for health since even skinny people get diabetes and cholesterol problems, so yearly exams are the only way to measure your health (Sifferlin, 2014).This article really caught my attention, because I remember New York efforts to ban large servings of sodas at certain venues a few years ago to fight obesity and searching our Uopeople library I found “Will sugary drink restrictions help New York win the war on obesity?” by Grynbaum (2012). I always found it interesting that politicians always try
overweight/obesity in children and adults has become a concern and a threat to national defense
Thin individuals can get similarly the same number of maladies or medical issues. Think about every one of the ladies who get bosom growth. It is safe to say that they are large? No, obviously not. What about men who get prostate growth. Is it accurate to say that they are corpulent too? In no way, shape or form. A few people who are corpulent never become ill. To make individuals pay more for protection over other individuals is separation to this world. There are thin individuals who have high hazard conduct or have family histories that will make them create therapeutic issues. But since their BMI is typical their premiums are less. I don't know numerous grown-ups. Particularly ladies, who have a BMI in the ordinary range. It is not an exact marker of good wellbeing. BMI is not flawless but rather it gives a generally decent sign for weight. Individuals mistake overweight for large. Stout is a BMI more than 30 with some squirm space for manufacture. I would put a cut off after BMI 37 for so. A great many people have no clue and would prefer not to hear that the greater part of their medical issues are because of being enormously overweight. We are not looking at losing 20-40 pounds. It's evaluated that at least 65% of medical issues and a hefty portion of them the most well-known are an immediate reason for being stout or gargantuan, not overweight.(Should corpulent individuals have higher health care coverage) The
Obesity in America, is almost becoming as sensitive a subject as discrimination or racism. Iain Murray states, “Health statisticians use a formula called the Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine if individuals should be categorized as overweight.” We Americans allow ourselves to indulge in the idea that a simplistic scale can determine whether or not a citizen is healthy or overweight. The scale, which is a basis to determine health and proper weight standings for some, does nothing more than bring about improper readings and emotional distress to others and does not support good health standard.
o address a problem with obesity, you cannot only focus upon how to discuss the issue but when. Especially in this generation, it seems that obesity is affecting our younger generation more than ever. Therefore, it is more beneficial to introduce more solutions in an earlier age rather than later. It is the same situation with the problem of obesity affecting military eligibility in 30% of men and women ages 17 to 24. Introducing solutions to this problem before applicants apply will decrease the percent of people being ineligible to join the military because of their weight.
Obesity in America is a huge epidemic. Over 35 percent of Americans are obese. Even though it is a problem, and we should teach people about the importance of exercise and a healthy diet, I don’t think that it is a good idea to require people to be healthy for a job or for school. It would be discriminatory to use someone’s weight against them for a job or school. There are many other reasons it wouldn't be fair.
“It's not the extremes and the treats that are the problem. It's the everyday,” Jamie Oliver. Obesity is one of the leading causes of military ineligibility among people 17 to 24, affecting nearly 30% of men and women in this age group. This greatly impacts the future of our country not only in health but in security as well and needs to be given a priority in our busy lives. In order to begin to combat the issue of obesity within the country we, as a government and a people, need to eliminate food deserts within the United States.
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the impact of the obesity epidemic on the military community and to help develop a conceptual framework that will assist in a future literature review. This paper will identify the prevalence of obesity in the military community. In addition, this paper will discuss the implications of the obesity epidemic on the military community as well as the current steps being taken to help decrease the growing incidence of overweight and obesity among the military community.
Obesity is a significant problem in our country today, but now it is effecting our brave men and women in law enforcement. Since the problem has been rapidly increasing in law enforcement, the government needs to start enforcing federal law enforcement guidance on physical fitness and weight standards, for local agencies to follow. Because, it will help push out those who are not able to meet the physical and/or the weight requirement. The benefits for enforcing the changes on the physical and body composition is to have all federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies have the same requirement, improved mental health, and improved
Being obese may be hazardous to your healthy and risk furthermore increases when fat is accumulated in the abdomen section as it is detrimental to organ systems of the body. Visceral fat surrounds and pillows organs and leads to metabolic disturbances such as Type 2 diabetes and breast cancer in women. Fat can end up being distributed in the body as a shape of a pear with fat accumulating on the thighs and buttocks or along the abdomen creating an apple shape in a person. The location of the fat distribution is influenced by both genetics and hormones. Visceral fat around the organs can be reduced with low caloric intake and low-fat diet combined with increased cardiovascular exercise. Subcutaneous fat that you can squeeze and pinch is
These include obesity, diabetes, and several heart conditions. Obesity is the term used for someone who qualifies as significantly overweight. A BMI (Body Mass Index) records weight in relation to height. A BMI of 25 is overweight and a BMI of 30 is obese. Obesity is not a disease in its self but it can lead to different health issues, some fatal. Obesity can be related to eighty percent of type two diabetes, seventy percent of cardiovascular disease, thirty percent to gall bladder surgeries, and forty two percent to breast and colon cancer. Unfortunately, obesity rates in people are rising rapidly. The United States alone had an obesity rate of twenty six percent in 2007. Some cases of obesity are gene related, but most other cases are a result of improper dieting and exercise among the individual ("Why Is Proper Nutrition Important?", Case Western Reserve University).
Obesity. It’s the thing that people really scared of but just couldn’t get away from it. It’s that one thing that haunt most people even though their physicals are not even slightly going towards an obesity. Many people freak out when knowing that their BMI index is between the ranges of 25 to 29.9 kg/m2. They have a misconception of reading a BMI index. Actually, a person is considered as an obese when the BMI index of his or her is more than 30kg/m2 while 25 to 29.9 kg/m2 is only considered as an overweight. The way for a person to calculate his or her BMI index is by using that person’s height and weight either in meter and kilogram or inches and pound. The formula is weight divided by height2 if that person is using kilogram and meter unit but if he or she is using the pound and inches unit, the formula is different where the weight is divided by height2 and times 703 which is the conversion factor. Even obesity have three different classes according to BMI index. Obese class I is from 30.0 to 34.9 while a person with a BMI index of 35.0 to 39.9 is classed as an obese class II while a person with a BMI index more than 40.0 is considered as an obese class III. The problem with obesity is that they are fatal because the medical condition of an obese person is the body fat has accumulated to the extent of it to have a negative effect on that person. The most related disease of all is diabetes or diabetes mellitus
