Brine Shrimp are small crustaceans found in various salt water lakes (Carolina Biological, 2012). The umbrella stage is the first stage, and its when the cyst breaks open, and the brine shrimp stay attached to the shell while surrounded by a hatching membrane (Carolina Biological, 2012). Until the young brine shrimp emerge they will stay attached to the hatching membrane for a number of hours (Carolina Biological, 2012). Natural Selection is when organisms are able to survive and reproduce because they are fit in the environment they live in. Brine shrimp are used for studies of natural selection because they have a unique adaptation (Carolina Biological, 2012). The Great Salt Lake, where the brine shrimp are from, is the largest natural
The purpose of this lab was to answer the question, “Of the saline solutions of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2% sodium chloride (NaCl), which solution will yield the highest hatching viability for the brine shrimp?” The hypothesis was that the saline solution most precise to the concentration of NaCl in seawater, which is approximately 3.5%, will yield the highest hatching viability. Therefore, the 2% NaCl solution will yield the highest hatching viability.
If hatching viability is affected by the amount of motor oil in the environment of the brine shrimp eggs, then when the amount of motor oil is increased the hatching viability will decrease.
Reaching a length of up to 5.5 centimeters (or about 2 inches), the bigclaw snapping shrimp is the largest member of the family Alpheidae, which are also known as the pistol shrimp. It is found in water up to 30 meters (98 feet) deep from as far north as North Carolina’s Outer Banks to the Brazilian coast. It also is able to survive in areas of rapidly different salinity; A. heterochaelis has be found in environments that range from mesohaline (having a salinity of 5 to 18 parts per thousand) to hyperhaline (having a salinity of 40+ ppt). This means that it lives in environments that range from brackish to seawater of above average salinity. It is most commonly found in areas where cover can be easily found during the day, such as an oyster reef.
Behavior of Brine Shrimp in Habitat Selection Introduction: This experiment was developed primarily to find the optimal or preferred living conditions of adult brine shrimp. In this lab 3 variables were tested in different degrees to determine which the shrimp prefer. The different variables were light, ph, and temperature. From outside resources I have found that brine shrimp can survive in temperatures ranging from 4° Celsius to 40° Celsius with an optimal temperature of 20°-25°. So I hope to reinforce this research by testing its validity in the lab. From another outside source brine shrimp display positive photo taxis, which means that they are attracted to light. And finally from my last outside source I have found information that
The development of A. salina will be unfavorable if exposed to too much ethyl alcohol. Treatment two and three have more ethanol alcohol than treatment one and more brine shrimp died when put into more ethanol alcohol. Since the viability was less than the viability in treatment one, the hypothesis was supported. Treatment four was the constant and had no ethanol alcohol which less cysts died when compared to treatment two and three, but when compared to treatment one, more had died,
Natural selection is the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring. One saline solution yielded the highest hatching viability because only one of the solutions was suitable for the brine shrimps and they were able to adapt to that place. The other
The lobsters which were put in tanks of varying salinity adjusted their hemolymph osmolarity to that of the external environment, making Homarus americanus an osmoconformer. The tank which had the lowest salinity
The Callinectes sapidus also known commonly as the Maryland Blue Crab, is a crustacean found in the Chesapeake Bay. The blue crab is found in aquatic environments, most often in estuaries. It characterized by it’s blue claws. The blue crabs undergo a life cycle of: zoeae, megalop, juvenile, and adulthood. The blue crab’s hard shells serve as a protective barrier for external dangers. The Callinectes sapidus comes from the order of Decapods, whereby it’s carapace has now evolved to be better suited for swimming. Of interest is the blue crab’s mating
The Mantis Shrimp is a mid sized crustacean that can grow up to 3 to 18 centimeters in size. It is known for its bright colors of blues reds and greens, they are primarily green on the belly it has bright reds and oranges on its legs and spots on its framework, while a bright blue is on its eyes. Females are almost always more orange and red than males which are in more various colors. Their spears or clubs are what define this species, these clubs are what mantis shrimp use as a deadly weapon, they can accelerate these clubs at the speed of a bullet from a .22 caliber rifle. Their eyes can see 12 different color waves the most of any animal discovered on earth. They make their homes by burrowing into the ground or finding old burrows left
Blackfish was released on the 19th of July 2013 in New York. Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s award-winning documentary is about a captive killer whale that has taken the lives of several people. This documentary explores the different stories of Tilikum’s attacks and the reasons for why these accidents are occurring in the sea park industry.
Some of the adaptations may include claws, behaviors, and the ability to camouflage (Biology 460). Darwin realized there was a connection with the way an organism survives and their environment. Different adaptations affect an organism 's fitness and the type of environment (Biology 460). “The difference in rates of survival and reproduction is called survival of the fittest” (Biology 460). Organisms with characteristics that are suited for the environment have the ability to survive and reproduce. However, organisms that have characteristics that are not suited for the environment have a low survival rate and have a limited number of offspring (Biology 460). Natural selection relates to the lab because only certain colored bead bugs were able to survive. The bead bugs that had an adaptation of color were able to blend in. The bead bugs that had a color that stood out were often eaten first. The bead bugs that have a color adaptation on their side had a higher survival rate and were able to reproduce and have many offspring. The bead bugs that did not have a color adaptation stood out. They had a low survival rate and had little to no to offspring. If the clear bead bug is put in the environment then it will survive the longest, because it will be able to blend in with the colors in the habitat.
Taking about a week to fully mature into an adult and living for several months, the shrimp do have a surprisingly long life cycle being also able to reproduce up to 300 cysts every 4 days in the right conditions. Other variables such as salinity, temperature, light, pH levels, water levels and predatory presence play a large role in the hatching rate of the crustacean. The brine shrimp are an extremely versatile micro-crustacean as they can survive up to 10x salt concentration of ordinary sea water (Eol.org, 2016) and are able to protect themselves during drought or when conditions are not ideal for survival. This is called highly resistant encysted gastrula embryo (cyst) that is easily able to hatch under conditions that can be replicated at home.
Natural selection is an important component of evolution. Natural selection occurs when some members of a population are better fit for survival and reproduction than the others in that population (Phelan 284-85, 2011). The environment in which organisms live plays a part in natural selection as well. Depending on the conditions of the environment, the organisms may pass down selected traits to their offspring. These selected traits will allow for the next generation to better adapt and survive longer. One example of evolution that has occurred in the past ten years is that of hypolimnas bolina, or the blue moon butterfly. The blue moon butterfly evolved through the process of natural selection in order to survive. The male blue moon
Crawfish are delicious crustaceans that closely resemble lobsters. Many people consider crawfish to be as delicious as lobsters, which is why these crustaceans are harvested all over the world. In the U.S., crawfish are closely associated with the haute cuisine and culture of Louisiana. In fact, crawfish are the official crustacean of the state. I normally prefer to harvest or purchase crawfish on the day I intend to cook them. However, many people prefer to purchase and eat them later but do not know how to keep crawfish alive in a sack or container for several days before finally preparing and eating them. Fortunately, I will provide you with some tips on how I keep my crawfish fresh and healthy
Through research and professional first hand account I will explain how the “War” on drugs has been a detrimental not only to drug users but the American society as a whole, and has ruined the lives of American people. While not having any effect on the use of illicit drugs or the flow of illicit drugs into America.
