As we all know on August 1, 2016, the new law “Campus Carry”, went into effect giving the right of a person that holds a license to carry may now carry on campus. Many Universities and Community Colleges are inputting policies to keep all staff and students safe. These policies will give the ones that carry to be responsible on campus with their firearm. Even though, I do not agree with the new law, if these steps are put in action I will feel safe. The changes that should be put in place is for one to have the person carrying wear some sort of identification. Then, at the entrance of all buildings metal detectors should be installed. Last but not least, require all that do partake in carrying on campus to register with security in a database.
Annale Renneker also discusses why concealed carry is necessary on college campuses today. Most college campuses are “open”, meaning that practically anyone can walk on to them and many buildings do not have metal detecters or security guards (Renneker 1). She cites the Virginia Tech shooting tragedy where the shooter was not even a student at the college, he simply walked on campus undetected and shot and killed 33 people before killing himself (Renneker 4). It is not difficult for one to enter a college campus and cause harm with a firearm if they intend to do so, anyone who has been on a public American college or university campus has seen non-students passing through at some point. She also cites the Department of Homeland Security’s
August 1 marks the day which the state’s new Campus Carry law was enacted. This law which comply with Senate Bill 11, has authorized a licensed holder to carry concealed handgun at University of Texas at Austin and other public universities in Texas. The implementation of this law have risen controversy between the stakeholders which are the faculty members, students, parents, staffers and alumni. In regard to this, President Fenves has assigned a Campus Carry Working Group to guide the implementation of Senate Bill 11 which complies the law and at the same time ensuring the safety of the campus.
Every student should feel safe when stepping foot on campus, but allowing concealed handguns on campus grounds brings forth fear and doubt. A new Texas state law allows license holders to have concealed handguns in college buildings and classrooms. I firmly believe in the second amendment, which provides the right to bear arms: this means that everyone has the right to protect their selves, families, and land. However, I stand completely against the new state law (which moves into effect in Aug. of 2016) that is allowing license-carrying gun holders to carry their weapons to and from classes in universities. With this ruling moving closer into effect, many faculty members and college students are now realizing the dangers that this will bring forth. This bill was passed to help protect and defend students from possible school shooters, but in reality, it only jeopardizes the safety and trust of many students and faculty members.
controlled on each campus throughout the state. The University of Texas in Austin is one of the universities that is required to comply with the new regulation. After reading some articles discussing Campus Carry, I realized there were compelling arguments in support of and in opposition to this expansion of gun rights. While some students support Campus Carry, others are quite concerned and feel that it may very well threaten their safety. In this essay, I will analyze the arguments made in support and opposition to the law, how the law may affect the students and faculty on campus, and provide alternate solutions which could provide the desired result.
The campus carry bill is a controversial bill that has been passed in many states and in August 2016 it will be enforced in Texas. States like Colorado, Idaho, Kansas and Mississippi have all approved the bill allowing private colleges to follow the law or not, however public colleges are only allowed to choose areas on campus that will be gun-free. The campus carry bill states, individuals 21 years of age, which obtain a handgun license, will be able to carry a gun on campus. The idea of the campus carry bill is to increase the people’s safety and decrease the number of mass shootings and other cases in the United States. There have been many questions brought up by both sides of the issue; there are many pros and cons on the issue that will go into effect with the campus carry bill. Twenty States in the Unites States have prohibited the law for carrying concealed guns on campus, but many others will be passing the bill to give students the right to carry a gun on campus.
“The first thing Violand saw was a gun, then the gunman, ‘I quickly dove under a desk, ’he recalled, ‘that was the desk I chose to die under.’ “(Maraniss). While the U.S. constitution says Americans have the right to bear arms, firearms continue to threaten our schools, work and religious areas. Regardless of the danger that guns possess some states have passed a bill to allow campus carry, which grants professors and college students the choice to carry a firearm on college or university campuses. Although, we have seen the amount of influence that firearms have caused in the past a good amount of public still supports the claim that guns are a reasonable source of protection. However, while many in favor of campus carry view it as a safety precaution, campus carry should not be allowed because there is no evidence that proves campus carry will keep students safer and carrying a concealed weapon can distract from the learning environment.
Carrying guns on college campuses has been a topic up for debate in recent years in America due to the increase of violent crimes. Recently in the state of Georgia, a campus carry bill was passed by the state’s Senate during the legislative session. The bill is likely to become a law soon, and Georgia students will be able to bring their concealed guns to college campuses all over the state. This is frightening knowing already how easily it is to obtain a license to carry a gun in the first place. According to handgunlaw.us, in Georgia, you don’t have to obtain a license to carry a gun as long as you’re not forbidden from carrying a gun. Yet, you must have a license to carry a concealed weapon and over the age of 21. If this law was to take
On August 1, 2016, students and faculty alike of universities in several states had their lives changed forever. Their safety became more endangered than ever when the most harmful law was passed, the allowance of open carry on college campuses. The state with the most argument over the law is Texas. Texas campuses now believe that having the campus carry policy will cause more young adults to want to attend that university because they are able to protect themselves. However, the campus carry law has caused Texas universities to make students, faculty, and the community feel unsafe in their “home” by making gun-related injuries more accessible to cause to those who feel the need to cause harm.
While there is a considerable amount of controversy on the topic of gun rights on American college campuses, there is an abundant amount of facts and examples of prior events that can help sway an individual on their stance regarding this issue. Furthermore, after considering research and arguments from both sides of the spectrum it is clear that guns should be allowed on college campuses. Students and faculty deserve the right to be able to protect and defend themselves in the event of a school shooting. Legalizing concealed carry on college campuses is truly bound to save more lives, rather than take them.
There are several debates among people that remain in a repetitive and vicious cycle of what is right, and what is wrong. Concealed carry on college campuses is one of those noticeable arguments. As the years pass by, gun rights on college campuses have become a touchy subject that is normally avoided at dinner tables and formal events. The laws concerning concealed carry on college campuses vary from state to state, and also from campus to campus. Several factors about concealed carry either have people uneasy while others adamantly fight for more gun rights on college campuses and universities. Should concealed carry be allowed on campus, and are people taking into account school violence, learning environment, crime, student’s safety and constitutional rights?
There has been a various amount of debate between several groups of people and colleges, inquiring if they would feel comfortable with students having a handgun on college campuses. A few states in the U.S. have been thinking about allowing firearms in University campuses throughout America due to the increasing amount of assaults. Some of the states that are already allowing guns on school campus are Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Texas, Utah, and Wisconsin. Although some individuals believe that having a gun on campus is a dreadful idea, some see it as a relief to their safety. It is known that a school’s first priority is to keep each and every student safe. Maintaining a safe environment in college or in any school is extremely necessary. In theory, if we start to allow the students and staff to carry weapons on school grounds they still need to learn how to use them appropriately, and be able to handle situations that get thrown their way. Students are put into situations where they have to stay up all night and do their school work. In addition to that, some actually have the responsibility to go to work. With that being said, in reality the students won’t have enough time to go through professional training to master the techniques on how to use guns responsibly like policemen and gain knowledge on how to react to extreme situations like they do.
The average college student carries notebooks, a laptop, and maybe some snacks or water in their backpack, what if it held a gun? Although many guns rights activists support the new Open Carry Bill 910 that allows concealed guns on college campuses, gun control laws should be enforced rather than be made ineffectual because guns are rarely used in self defense, it would decrease the number of gun deaths, and the average college student isn’t responsible enough to carry a gun.
The laws on concealed carry hand-guns have become stricter over the past couple of years. When it comes to concealed weapons on college campus, everybody there will have a different opinion. The students, faculties, and staff’s opinions will differ because of how they were raised, or even where they grew up. Some people want to have a concealed hand gun on a college campus because it is their right and for protection, but putting other lives in danger is a greater risk.
Gun control has been the highlight of discussion amongst most politicians and civilians for the past few decades, but a sub-topic has emerged from this, guns on campus in the form of a bill in the form of a bill from the Florida Legislature. This bill states that those who have a concealed weapons licenses may carry concealed guns on any campus in the state of Florida. It entitles students, visitors, and even employees above the age of 18 to carry guns openly with them on school grounds, those over the age of 21 may carry concealed weapons. Eight million concealed carry permits are as of now valid throughout the United States, meaning anybody, mentally stable or not, could be carrying a weapon we cannot see, not only on school grounds, but
Shootings on college campuses are far too common. They are a tragedy for not only the victims but the families of the perpetrators. There are a multitude of tools that colleges employ to prevent shootings such as campus police forces, interagency coordination with local and state law enforcement, in addition to free counseling services for students and faculty. However, despite these multiple protective measures, shootings still occur and lives are lost. A solution that will bring aid in countering this problem is allowing students to possess concealed carry permits on campus. Students should be allowed to have concealed carry permits on campus because it makes campuses safer, discourage people from getting the idea to attack students because they are armed, and could help prevent or mitigate sexual assaults from happening.
