In the play Antigone, the Greek tragedy, Antigone is caught for burying her brother against the king's will. You probably thinking, well nothing like this would happen. But this moment to many of us is very relatable in the sense of how we stand out. Thank goodness for America and it’s freedom, because in some places it’s against the country's law to have a different religion, gender or ethnicity. If you were to live in one of these countries would you still be bold enough to stand out because of what you believe? Would you be willing to sacrifice everything for your standards even if this means not being a good citizen? You might be surprised what people sacrifice for. She truly did stick it out just to be loyal and do what she thought was best. Antigone had no regrets “ I admit I did it. I won’t deny that” (Johnston 8). I say this is a good thing because it’s okay to stand out and do what you think is best. She did what she was supposed to do as a citizen. The Greeks citizen requirements maybe a little different that citizenship today. Here in America there’s standards, but not requirements. Coming together as a nation “bound not by race or religion, but by the shared values of freedom, liberty, and equality” according to www.uscis.gov. This is saying that America is different. Being a citizen, and having that citizenship, you can believe what you want and be treated like the rest. From www.uscis.gov, Standards include “Stay informed of the issues affecting your community. Respect and obey federal, state, and local laws. Respect the rights, beliefs, and opinions of others. Pay income and other taxes honestly, and on time, to federal, state, and local authorities”. Becoming the perfect citizenship to Antigone wasn’t on her priority list, and she got killed for that. I don’t think that was the right punishment because standards should be the freedom of liberty and equality. I have just written about my personal thoughts about what citizenship means to me, how it is shown as bad in the play, Antigone.
