Walking down Loras Boulevard with ease at the beginning of the semester to the bookstore for my first writing assignment, I captured my initial perspective of the College Writing course. My thoughts were it would be a smooth transition from my high school writing courses, and I would glide through the course with ease like my downward strides to the bookstore. However, over the past semester I have never been more challenged and intrigued by course material and assignments in a writing course. As I conquered the steep, upward hill of Loras Boulevard it portrayed the knowledge I already possessed, the new writing skills necessary to succeed in the class, as well as changes and growth in my writing style. In high school, I was in honors and AP English courses. As a senior in high school, my writing course was AP English Literature, and I wrote mainly in class based essays. I would be given a prompt or an article and then I would need to write a reflective paper on the topic. Also, the course covered skills in writing such as including the ethos, pathos, and logos in the writing. The audience for the writing assignments mainly was the teacher, however I also had a few presentations to the class. Papers were shared with classmates for peer editing too. In contrast, the College Writing course included a variety of new skills and challenging writing assignments. I learned how to organize an essay, so it reflected my ideas in a concise manner without the clutter. A paper

My high school years were not spectacular, nor were they terribly productive.I left high school without learning how to proficiently write an essay. However, CUNY's Borough of Manhattan Community College afforded me a desperately needed second chance. It was at BMCC that I sharpened many of the skills I should have mastered in high school. I was able to greatly improve my writing ability. I began college as a student who found writing a 2 page paper to be a terrifyingly daunting task, but due to practice and numerous resources offered by CUNY, I soon was able to compose papers consisting of 10-14 pages with confidence and efficiency.

Writing in the college-level is needed in order to master college work in any class. Basically all classes require you to more than likely submit some kind of research paper or essay. Additionally, this chapter identifies some fears that college students may face when taking writing classes, especially at the time of working on an essay. Most of the time, these terrors are the product of non-factual or misleading beliefs from students that have not taken a writing class yet, however, it plays an important decision making when enrolling to take writing classes.
When I graduated high school, I already knew that I wanted to attend college other than going to the work force. I heard stories about college being fun and it is one of the greatest accomplishment a person can achieve. So, I began college right after high school. As I entered college, I learned that I will have to focus more on writing papers than having fun. In high school my teachers did not prepare me for college essays. I feel like I learned a lot more failing on my college writing assignment than passing on the essays in high school. Well now I have approached the end of the semester of college, and I am exhausted from the constant writing assignments. Although the assignments were difficult like I said it was also helpful. Each assignment helped me in different ways. The assignments helped me improved with my grammar, time management, and how to process before I begin writing. In English 1010 I had different types of writing assignments. I had to write a literacy narrative paper, analysis paper, research paper, and lastly an autoethnography paper which I am doing now. An autoethnography is when the author uses self reflects to write about their experiences about writing a paper. English is not the only subject that I had writing assignments in. I also had to write assignment in my business class. My English teacher had informed me that I will have to do an autoethnography. College writing to me is a new chapter in my life. I am only a junior in high school, which means I have quite a ways to go when it comes to learning and maturing as a person. As I take on this new chapter I expect to see my writing change along with me, for I’ll have new experiences and feelings to put forth in my writing.
This semester was my very first semester as a college student. Being the first, it was probably the semester I would learn the most in. I learned the expectations for writing that I will have to live up to for the next four years of my college career. Though my high school teachers were usually demanding because I was in the Honors English section throughout high school, writing in college has still ?raised the bar? for me. College-level writing is frightening it’s basically a wakeup call that you’re growing up and writing essays will probably be applied in whatever you do. But it’s important for us students to know how to write an essay properly, so it can benefit us in our future as students and in our future careers. It would be difficult for me to say that as a student, that when I first thought of college writing, I thought you write millions of facts down and call it a day. But college-level writing is a piece of writing of written work that should grab the reader’s attention because as a college writer your written work should go more in-depth into the assigned topic. There are many examples that a college level writing piece should include, such as good research, sources must be listed, and the structure should be logical. Lots of experiences in my life made me realize the definition of college writing, for instance, writing essays through the years, reading articles, and having my own blog.
Entering a new and unfamiliar place, a burst of cold air hit my skin like a gust of wind on a stormy night. Awaking my nerves, the wind reminded me of where I was. Within my sight, there were roughly twenty other people anxiously walking down the hallway. Feeling relieved, I noticed many of the other students were walking to their first day of college classes as well. At the time of entering my first college class, College Writing One, I did not think there would be anything special about it. This thought, as I found out, would be entirely wrong. If you were to ask a group of people if writing in college is important, almost everyone would agree that it is, but it’s the next question that stumps everyone and makes them have to think a little deeper. That question is, why? Why is writing in college so important? College writing is a needed necessity in college, and for your future career because most careers require writing or documenting to be done. Not only is it important for everyone’s career but it is especially important for my future in the psychology department.
Over the course of this past semester, my ability to write has improved tremendously. Prior to undertaking this course, my expertise in writing was not as fine-tuned as it should have been. I had never previously been enrolled in a class specifically tailored to writing-- which was quite clear. Upon reading my past works, it becomes apparent that my writing style consisted of fluff, small words, and inconsistently structured sentences. These problems have, for the most part, been remedied with the coursework I have tackled in College Writing. Rather than long, drawn out papers that take an eternity to reach the primary point, my recent work is much nicer in terms of composition and grammar. I credit these improvements to the three primary
When I got to college, I expected college writing to be the same, for all disciplines. Talking to Professor Tim Lindberg, professor of American government and politics, and his discipline is political science, at the University of Minnesota Morris, gave me an insight on the writing done for the discipline. I did the interview in his office; I noticed that his walls were lined with books. When I went into the interview, I believed that research and facts were the most important aspects of writing for the political science major, but after my interview I learned that concise writing is most important to convey your argument clearly to the reader.
The likelihood of passing the University of California Analytical Writing exam was zero to none. I have always had trouble writing, even though in my high school English classes I received mostly A’s for my writing assignment. The teachers concentrated on whether the students understood the concept, not on the essay clarity. So, I knew I lacked the proper writing tools for the exam. Once I received the results that I failed my exam and needed to take a remedial class I was upset. However, it would be greatly beneficial for me.Before I could take the College Writing R1A, I had to take the College Writing N2 during the summer. The College Writing N2 helped me focus on the foundation to set up an essay. I found it difficult to outline an essay, but the CWN2 class provided skillful tools to organize my ideas. Thus, in College Writing R1A class I used the tools learned during the summer to further my clarity in my essays. Throughout this semester I have utilized the skills of writing my quotes and applying analysis before starting my outline. This step allowed me to set up my body paragraphs. Without the ideas, I acquire in CWN2 class I could not have focused on the properties of an essay.Therefore, I have become more meticulous in writing an effective essay. I learn that is best to put my thoughts in boxes that outline the general idea of the theme. So, when I have a question organized are my ideas . In addition, when citing quotes, I have to make sure I am setting it up rather
