The Importance Of Communication Between Nurse And The Patient

Good communication between the nurse and the patient is imperative to putting together a plan for the patients care. Nurses need to be able to form a working relationship with the patient, and in order to do that a nurse has to show empathy, sincerity, and respect. Nurses must be able to spend time with the patient so that they can develop trust that the nurse does indeed care. This will allow the patient to be more open and honest with their information and feelings. This therapeutic communication is what will allow the nurse to devise a nursing plan that is specifically designed just for that patient in order to facilitate the best possible outcome. It is so important that the nurse has good communication with the patient. When initially meeting the patient, the nurse will be establishing a relationship that she will have until the patient leaves the hospital, this is what is known as a helping relationship. The relationship between the nurse and the patient is a professional one, this is how the nurse will be able to care for, adapt, change plans and maintain that the patient is getting what they need at any given time. To be able to do these tasks, good communication is essential to setting up a plan of care. Each plan is individually created specifically for that patient, and addresses all areas of concern. The patient needs to feel that the nurse is trustworthy, knows what she is doing, and has his best interests at heart. If a patient knows that the nurse is non-judgemental and caring, they will be more open and honest regarding their lifestyle, what brought them to the hospital, drug and/or alcohol use, sex and anything else considered personal information. This information will be very helpful in setting up their care plan. Good communication can assist with other issues that often come up during the patient’s hospital stay, such as fear. Sometimes the patient does not let anyone know that they are anxious and fearful, this in turn could cause their blood pressure to become elevated. If they share that they are afraid, the nurse can address the issue, early on. Sometimes fears are unfounded and a nurse could very kindly assure the patient that there is nothing to fear and
