“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” The views on community service have changed throughout the years as seen by the change in views between baby boomers and millennials. Baby boomers viewed it as a mandate because if not done they would go to war but now as viewed by many this outlook has changed many believe that millennials have changed this view and view it as an open path towards a brighter future. Although many may argue that community service brings about a sense of morality it must be a free choice due to time consumption, overwhelming stress, and punishment. Initially, community service should not be mandatory due to time consumption. In paragraph seven of, ¨Volunteering Opens Teen’s Eyes to Nursing¨ the Detroit News emphasizes how Prueter will still volunteer even after all his other added activities: “Prueter wants to be in the marching band when he moves up to Garber High School … he doesn’t plan on letting practice get in the way of his visits...” (Source 3). Through Prueter’s future time investments, there is an understanding about how time consumption is a big ideal throughout community service because although he believes it to be no big obstacle it will be at some point. This thirteen year old views it as easy but many sixteen year old's struggle with maintaining time to do homework and going to band practice imagine adding community service to these tasks. According to
Community service should be required because it prepares you for some thing you will need in life such as leadership skills, responsibility, time management, and the will to work with others. For students in high school they have lots of obstacles that can keep them from doing what they love or effecting there upcoming lives or enjoying their community. Some people never realize how much there communities need them till they the one who need a helping hand (khan 1).
When a good service becomes mandatory, it loses the effect it had originally. In Volunteering to Graduate: Do We Need More Requirements? by Miriam Dodge, the author makes an important point about community service. “... making a selfless
Community service is a good way to help people in need, but if it is required you are not doing it for the right reasons. Students may not ever want to help people after they graduate because they will fell like its only something they do for school and they already got credit and graduated so why should they keep doing it. Students could volunteer if they want to help someone but if they are forced to do the work they may not be much of a help. They may do a bad job or be rude because they do not want to do it, they might have other things they have to get done.
“Community Service is important for many reasons. Taking part and volunteering teaches compassion and understanding. You can volunteer for something you really believe and have an interest in, and can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like or have time for.” Community service is really easy to get into. I mean, it is not like you have to put out an application and have an interview in order to do it. It is really easy to get into, and is really fun. It is things you wouldn’t even think are considered, like:
Most young adults think volunteering is just something additional they can do to put more things to put down on a college applications, something that isn’t quite necessary, but nice to participate in. As kids think that to do community service you have to personal payoff for the action to be worth it, they sometimes feel it is a waste of time. Although community service is not mandatory for teens in high school to graduate some argue that it should be required. Should young adults have to have community service hours to be able to graduate high school? Research shows that youth who participate in any kind of service have better academic, behavioral, or civic outcomes than youth who do not participate in any service at all suggests that a
Growing up in a small town, I see the importance of giving back to your community. When most people think of giving back to their community they think of money. Your time is sometimes more valuable in a small community than money. I think teens should be required to perform sixty hours of community service before they are eighteen years old. I have grown up watching my mother donate a lot of time to organizations within our small community and she has required me to be a part of some of those efforts. Volunteering my time has taught me the importance of giving back.
The first time I volunteered to sort food at a food shelter for my middle school service requirement, I felt confused. I had heard adults who volunteered talking about how good they felt to be giving back to their community and helping those in need; so why did I feel like I was just doing busy work in order to graduate? At no point did I feel like my work was fostering a sense of community in me. When I finished my service requirement, I was relieved to be done and did not take up community service again until I entered high school and faced yet another service requirement. And it’s not just me: I do not know a single other student who found they truly enjoyed community service through their high school or middle school service requirement. I do know students who enjoy volunteering, yet all of them got started with service before they were required to do it. With this evidence, it does not seem like a mandatory service requirement is fostering a sense of community in
Community Service in The United States should not be mandatory! It takes away the main purpose of volunteer work. In the first essay, it is stated that "Service to others is an obligation that comes with citizenship." I do not agree with that at all.
Community service does not require you to cure cancer, or creating a huge organization that funds diabetes research, but can instead be little things. While I know in the great aspect of the world and life I did not to a humongous deed of goodwill, but it made me feel completed and good about myself helping out the little girls and making a bowl, which I why more people should help out around the community. Who knows where we could get if everyone picked up teach once a week, or made a $10 donation to a
Communities around the world will always need service's provided by the citizens. In America though, we have the right to serve if we choose. The only time something is mandated, is if you break the law and are court ordered to do community service. There are many different forms of community service, from law enforcement, hospitals, to donating food to the homeless.
Winston Churchill once said, "We make a living by what we get, but make a life by what we give." Volunteerism not only helps ones community, but additionally benefits teenagers in personally and professional way. High school students should be required to complete one hundred hours of community service before entering college in order to increase their global awareness and maturity.
Here we have two artcles that both make valid points as to why community service is useful within the United States (U.S.). Article one talks about why it should be mandatory for all U.S. citizens to complete a one year voluntary service to people in need. I myself am opposed to this idea because not all people are the same, some people are more caring than others. For example: we go through a lot of fires during the summer season here in the U.S. I myself am unqualified to go out and fight fires and it will take a lot of training and finances on top of paying me to provide services in an area that I do not want to be qualified in, so I'll leave fighting fires to the people that want that profession, I know that if I am to be thrown into a
The United States is one of the strongest countries in the world. We stand for equality, and we are a democracy. The country has became what it is today due to everybody pulling their weight in society. I strongly believe that each adult should perform one year of community service unless a medical reason prohibits them to do so.
Throughout my time at Hughson High School, I am proud to say that I have completed over 250 hours of community service. The activities that I have participated in have made a huge impact on my life. They have not only taught me about what it means to serve the community, but also they have helped to choose the career I would like to have upon college graduation.
Nevertheless, the common misconception linked to graduating College students is that they are well-rounded adults, who have done their time and are ready and able to enter the working force and go on with their lives. The fact of the matter is that not all recent college students are mature and knowledgeable on their community and the world at large. “Teens who volunteer increase their knowledge of the world and the problems that face it” (“Youths”). This quote is not only applicable to teens, but college students as well; unfortunately, college students become isolated from the rest of the world while they are in their course of study and do not make time to give back to the community that helped them become who they are.
