A great deal of attention has been conducted on concussions in recent years, along with that has come amassed research that is being done by people all over the world. Every Doctor I have ever counseled with about concussions has said we learn something new every day about concussions. The surface has barely been broken when it applies to knowledge and understanding of concussions. Through my own personal turmoil and experiences I have undergone, I have cultivated many valuable things. The most crucial and valuable advice I could give anyone about concussions is, if you have suffered a concussion do not put yourself in a high risk environment where hitting your head is a possibility until your brain has fully healed. If you just do that, chances are you will heal just fine and heal in the normal recovery period. …show more content…
From my experience if you leave one of these components out, proper healing is going to be hard or take longer than usual. Until six months ago, if you asked me if I thought I would ever be able to overcome these concussions the answer would be, no. Doctors were unable to do anything for me except to offer me pain killers to mask the problem. Over the past three years I have been essentially at the same level with only little improvement. I was fortunate to come across the Carrick Brain Center through my research for my website. The Carrick Brain Center is a phenomenal Concussion, TBI, PTSD, treatment center. They have a very holistic approach along with multidisciplinary treatment. I spent a week in Dallas undergoing an immense deal of treatment. Along with the treatment my diet was changed
Transition to Body/Main Point 1 How bad are concussions for your body you may ask. Bad.
Concussions are common due to the fact that there is not much protection between the skull and the brain. The medical definition of a concussion is, “ A traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth,” ( What is a Concussion). Concussions can cause temporary loss of consciousness due to the bruising of the brain and the force of the impact. During the impact, “The brain [may] bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes, sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). That is why concussions can have such a lasting impact. Depending on the extent, most concussions only last for a few days to a week, but some can last for months due to the damage. Concussions are put into categories based on how long they are believed to last so doctors know how long to keep athletes out from strenuous activity. “Concussions are graded as mild (grade 1), moderate (grade 2), or severe (grade 3), depending on such factors as loss of consciousness, amnesia, and loss of equilibrium” (Lava ). With each grade, there are different symptoms and differences in how long they last.
The first three common thoughts that we should have a idea of are, if you think you have a concussion, be sure to not hit your head again. This seems like a pretty obvious one, but many people have the idea that if they were to hit his or her head hard enough, they don’t think much of it and continue whatever it was they were doing. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates about 1.36 million concussions a year (Schrock 2). The second is rest is not the only treatment available for concussions. Many people, including Schrock, have had symptoms when they try to go back to work after a
Concussions in sports are a very serious subject, including it’s recovery and prevention. Concussions have affected many athletes and even normal people and too many concussions could end up having serious consequences later on in life. Sports leagues and doctors should be taking more precaution in making sure everyone stays safe and healthy.
In recent years concussions have become more and more of a topic due to their effects on the people who receives them. Concussions can cause a multitude of problems for a person later in their life whether they suffered from a major concussion or just a minor concussion. These problems can occur if a person ended up with multiple concussions over a lifetime or if they only have had one single concussion The problems a person can encounter are all somewhat connected but very diverse at the same time. Most of the problems a person will encounter will be due to a change in that person's brain but they can range from simple memory problems to suicidal problems.
There are multiple symptoms associated with the receiving of a concussion, but there are three that are outstandingly common among the general population of victims of concussions. Those include sensory changes and deficits, emotional difficulties like depression, and an overall reduction in cognitive functioning. According to Moore, Broglio, and Hillman, a concussion is defined as “a complex pathophysiological process affecting the brain, induced by traumatic biomechanics forces.” Sport-Related Concussion and Sensory Function in Young Adults Simply stated, this means that a concussion is an injury that results from a traumatic blow to the brain. In recent years, concussions have been a popular topic in the media. Whether it be with regards
Concussions or mild traumatic brain injuries (MTBI) are the most common forms of traumatic brain injury. There are between 1.6 and 3.8 million concussions a year that occur due to sports and recreation accidents alone (CDC). Mild concussions and MTBIs were once thought to be insignificant in terms of consequences. However, there now is significant evidence that neurological even with what is thought to be a mild injury, physiological, and cognitive changes can occur. Individuals sustaining mild brain injuries often report an assortment of physical, cognitive, and emotional/behavioral symptoms referred to as post concussion syndrome (PCS). There are many symptoms associated with PCS, but these symptoms are often mistaken as behavior, mood, and/or adjustment disorders.
The best treatment that is shown the best progress is rest. It is said that rest is the best way to recover from a concussion, because you need to rest your body and your brain. It is best to stay away from regular activities for a while and ease your way back into them. Now, some people feel better in a few hours, but there are others who have still have symptoms for weeks or even months. So the best thing for those people is to not push themselves too hard and just take it easy for a while. Doctors will most likely like to run test on the person who has a brain injury. They will ask questions about the injury to see if the remember what happened, test their ability to pay attention, “neuropsychological test are ways that doctors can find out how well you are thinking and remembering after a concussion” (WebMD website). Also a doctor might order imaging scans like a CT or MRI scan just to make sure brain hasn’t sustained any bruising or
I believe concussion is a bad thing for us because it can lead into brain function. I think concussion happen a lot in football because player are getting hit a lot. Concussion has been a bad impact in people life because we are getting hit a lot. Overtime we don’t know why concussion occur only Doctor can tell what happen to concussion. I believe football player get concussion all time because they always hit each other a lot of time. Concussion is worst in America because we get are head hit a lot. There are factor of keep athletes safe from concussion are wearing a helmet, put on knee padded, and also shoulder pad.
Have you ever not been able to do anything without being in pain? Have you ever been so tired and confused you don't know what to do? Concussions affect a large amount of athletes and everyday people. Recovering from a concussion is an extremely painful and frustrating process.I overcame my challenging concussion because I dealt with not being able to go on my phone or watch television or read and being bored and my painful headaches.
Concussions are serious injuries but they are often overlooked. Even having one concussion can instantly increase the chances of another concussion happening. At the end of the day athletes who receive a concussion need to take time to heal completely before going back out on the field or else it could cause permanent damage that would change their life forever.
Many people hear the word “concussion” and think of it as being just a simple headache; however, not many know the significant health consequences associated with receiving a concussion. Concussions can have a variety of adverse effects on a person, some of which include sensory changes and deficits, emotional difficulties like depression, and an overall reduction in cognitive functioning. Abnormal eye movements and a reduced sense of touch are examples of sensory changes and deficits that are common with concussions. Individuals on the receiving end of concussions also deal with emotional difficulties including depression and even certain forms of guilt. Reduction in overall cognitive
Concussions are the most common injury in all sports and can cause more damage than any other injury. That may sound a bit dramatic but it is the truth. A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that affects your brain function. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance and coordination. Concussions are caused by a blow to the head, violent shaking of the head, or other parts of the body. If not treated properly, long-term memory begins to fade away and people become more forgetful. That is just the start of it. However most concussion cases have a full recovery and minimum side-effects. Unfortunately some people get more concussions after another and they end up damaging the very thing that provides functions for the body. The biggest thing about treating a concussion is do not engage in any activity that could potentially damage the brain and make the concussion worse than it already is. It is also noted that brain cells are killed rapidly every time someone takes a concussive blow to the head and that’s why it is important to be extra protective of the head. That means no intake of alcohol or tobacco because of the “buzz” it provides which makes even a headache worse than it should, and on top of
In "Concussion recovery is slower in girls, mounting evidence suggests" by Diana Kwon, the passage states that concussions occur in female athletes more than twice the time as male athletes. Occuring in the sport of hockey, soccer, and football, where heads are continually clashing. I honestly do not believe that girl or boy impact sports should be banned; i do believe that the athletes should wear helmets. Helmets should be necessary when playing high-risk sports. Female sports do not have as many rules as males do which is why concussions occur more within the female population.
When I was in sixth grade I had trouble focusing and I would always get bad headaches. I was playing football then and when I got hit, it was the worst pain I had ever dealt with in my entire life although no one could tell me why. Everyone thought I had concussions, but I did not have the symptoms of a concussion at all. There was a spot on the back of my head that was about the size of a dime at first. My mom noticed it at the end of October while giving me a haircut and just thought it was a calcium deposit. In the next month it had grown to the size of a quarter, so I went to the doctor. This is when I found out I had a tumor growing with cancerous cells on the outside of my head.
