Have you ever played a sport, that injured you or give you a concussion? Safety always comes first. Especially, when you're doing something that can get you an injury really easy. Having protective gear is important, mainly in sports. Some sports should have protective head gear. Protecting your head is important, and every part in it. Half of the sports are usually contact sports, which getting hurt in the head can be more of the chance, which is bad. As well, getting hurt in the head has many consequences which no one wants to have. Many athletes get concussions and it’s not good. 90 percent of the times, the person is conscious while having a concussion, the other 10 percent, there are unconscious. Therefore, protective head-gear …show more content…
There are three rules, you should follow, when you have a concussion. First, Recognize, which you have to know the symptoms and the signs of concussion. Then Report, tell your coach, athletic trainer or your parents about our symptoms. Last is to Rest, take off from our sports, other activities, and maybe even schoolwork, until everything goes back to normal. Knowing these three rules, are important so, if you have a concussion, you know what to do.
Having concussion during sports, is very serious and need care right away. Many head impacts and concussions are caused by contact sports. If the person doesn’t tell and needs help right way, the damage can become more serious. To help an injured player, from getting a concussion, the coach, athletic trainer, and parents need to know that these players need protective headgear for their safety. In Source B, it states, “ CDC reports show that the amount of reported concussions has doubled in the last 10 years. The American Academy of Pediatrics has reported that emergency room visits for concussions in kids ages 8 to 13 years old has doubled, and concussions have risen 200 percent among teens ages 14 to 19 in the last decade.” Therefore, kids and teens are getting concussions in the activities there are doing. For example, in high school football, many concussions happen in practice, and in the games. 47 percent is in games, and 33 percent is in practice. Every year, the number of concussions double up. Few sports statics
Football can be a very dangerous sport. And although those who play the game believe that they are being protected by the helmets that they wear, the truth is that this may not be the case. In a recent study released by the American Academy of Neurology it has been found that “protection against concussion and complications of brain injury is especially important for young players, including elementary and middle school, high school and college athletes, whose still-developing brains are more susceptible to the lasting effects of trauma”(Science Daily, 2014). The study also found that standard football helmets worn by the majority of players on the field today, only reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury by 20 percent compared to not wearing a helmet at all (Science Daily, 2014).
Most states have three action steps that must be used in order to provide maximum safety for the athletes that are playing the games. The first step is to “educate coaches, parents, and athletes.” By educating coaches, parents, and athletes about the possibility of getting a concussion while playing a sport, they will all know what to look for if there is ever a hard hit to the
For example, the most promising item that has been made is a helmet made to reduce shock to the brain and movement of the brain. While these helmets are useful for hockey and football, they won't be of much use for sports that you can't wear a helmet in. Even though there are rules in place, not everyone recovers in the same amount of time. Especially girls, girls recover slower than boys. If a girl were to get a concussion and follows the "no same day return rule" but the next day they feel fine and returns, they could actually not be fully recovered. This in return will cause more problems, especially if the girl gets another concussion during the period of
After hearing Adam speak to the class this past week, it was good to get an inside look on his thoughts on concussion and what is being done about it. Some of the things that I took away from him were I coaches needs to become better at the sport they are coaching. They need to learn the right way to prevent the injuries from happening at an earlier age. One thing that the Athletic trainer tries to do is they want to make sure that the athletes gets back on the field as fast as possible but they do not want to rush them. Doing so might cause more harm than good. When the player has a concussion, I thought it was interesting that they inform the athlete’s academic advisors first before the coaches. This was they the teachers can be inform on
The hit is quick and powerful. Sight is blurry; memory is hazy. The hand in front of your face has six fingers instead of five. JFK is president and the Grand Canyon is in Alaska. Concussions are the most frequent of traumatic brain injuries and they are receiving similar treatment as a rolled ankle. Sports of all kinds, ages, and gender need to increase the precautions set forth to preventing this life threatening injury.
This experiment is a descriptive research study that was used to see the amount of knowledge and amount of education college coaches have been given on the topic of Concussions. To see if coaches know the signs and symptoms of a concussion, how to identify if an athlete has concussion symptoms and if the coaches know the recovery protocol for an athlete to return to play. For this experiment, 28,183 coaches of division l, ll, and lll, colleges all over the country were sent an email asking to participate in this study to see how much knowledge and education they have on concussions. This lead to some limitations because they can only do the study on the coaches that choose to participate. But of those 28183 asked, 1818 coaches responded
In many sports their are often lots of injuries and that goes no different for sports like football, soccer, or baseball. In some of those sports head injuries are often reported, and these injuries usually involve some sort of brain trauma or a concussion. Article 2 says that a concussion is a head trauma induced alteration in mental statues that may or may not result in loss of concussioness. An athlete with a recent concussion injury should be given a few weeks to rest before going back into the game, and if they feel well enough they can go back in. During these weeks they should be resting enough so that their head can heal from whatever injury they got. Most likely after a few weeks they should feel better, and as long as a physician says they're fine to go back they should be able to go back.
Barnett argues “Live contact during regular season and postseason practises will be allowed no more than three days a week and limited to no more than 30 minutes a day and a total of no more than 80 minutes a week. Contact also is not allowed on more than two consecutive days.”(Barnett, pg1) This will help decrease the number of concussions in children and teens in sports. Although it is not a way to prevent them it is still a serious injury that people of all ages should be cautious about. (HELMETS IN SPORTS) “Helmet use in sports spans such varied activities as race-car driving, motorcycling, baseball, hockey, football, lacrosse, equestrian activities, and bicycling. The substantial increase in helmet use is a tribute to the consumer's concern for safety, society's interest in minimizing serious injury, and the helmet industry's efforts to produce acceptable products. Generally speaking, however, helmet safety design has evolved slowly”(Coben, 1). Helmets in sports are the most important tool for protection from concussions. Even though concussions are not 100% preventable schools should pay the extra money to get the safest helmets. Helmet safety is evolving and there are new helmets specifically for concussions. “Forty-one states and Washington, DC, have youth sports TBI laws that require coaches and teams to remove young athletes from play if they are suspected of having suffered a TBI, and all of those states but Wisconsin and Ohio require
When I was in high school people started to get more serious about concussions and education. I done remember the traumatic stories much, but I remember the testing and education about concussions in sports toward coaches, teachers, students, and parents. Although some of the stories are very serious and sad, I think they were very eye opening to people and easily got people’s attention. Professional sports had strict rule for injuries and included concussion guidelines along with the “when in doubt, sit them out” attitude. This led legislators, parents, and schools to have similar practices in high school sports. I think it all would have happened over time, but some of the chronic injuries motivated people to implement rules and strategies
When participating in a sport, the players are aware of the risks. Physical damage is always a strong possibility, but what about the mental damage that a player can receive. Concussions have been known to occur frequently in contact sports, making the rules based on injuries in need of change. The current rule is that after an injury occurs, players have to have a medical professional sign off before they are allowed to play. This is great for injuries related to the physical form of a person, but when it comes to the mental aspects, these rules need to be re-written. Things such as the types of people affected by concussions, how vulnerable concussions can be on the mind, and how concussions can affect everyone around a person that has been inflicted by a concussion, should be brought into consideration while deciding a specific set of
From movies to organizations people are actually starting to treat concussions as a threat to the well being of athletes all over the world. But what exactly is a concussion? A concussion or a mild traumatic brain injury happens when someone is struck in the head hard enough to cause the brain to rattle within the skull and causes swelling and inflammation of the brain. (Carman 2015) The side effects that occur due to a concussions include, headaches, drowsiness, nausea, memory loss, and loss of consciousness. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) If an athlete is or was experiencing these symptoms then their coach should immediately sit them out to make sure they are okay. If a patient is thought to have a concussion then they should not return to play until being cleared by a doctor. This is vital for the athletes safety because when an athlete has or has had a recent concussion studies show that they are more likely to receive another traumatizing blow to the head. Aaron Carman explains in his article “Youths who sustained one or more concussions within 1 year prior to a new concussion reported more- prolonged symptoms,30 suggesting a possible ‘window of vulnerability’, and placing previously injured youths at higher risk of protracted recovery.” (Carman 2015) This can lead to having reoccurring concussions which can lead to complications later on in
Concussions are becoming a big concern in sports today, mainly in football. All sports today, you can get Concussions in like golf, tennis and swim these sports you would never think of getting a concussion in but you actually can get on that is why concussions are becoming a big thing now in the sports world. People in the sports world understand the seriousness of concussions because they hurt really badly and you have to sit out from your sport for weeks on end till your concussion is gone.
On fall Friday nights everywhere, high schools are buzzing for one thing: football. The players have practiced all week and are excited to get on the field. Students, parents, and fans alike are all counting down the minutes until kickoff. However, in one play all that excitement can be taken away. One helmet-to-helmet hit is sometimes all it takes for a player to sustain a concussion. Concussions happen frequently in football. Many people do not realize the risks associated with this type of injury. High school coaches need to be better trained on how to recognize potential concussions, athletes need to be better educated on concussions, and stricter concussion
Athletes around the world come together every day to compete and with competition comes injuries. Athletic trainers are typically the first responders to assist the athletes and provide diagnoses and treatment. Although injuries are always going to happen the main responsibility of an athletic trainer is to prevent them from happening. There are a wide range of possible injuries in which an athlete can get into, concussions are one of the most common types of injuries during sporting activities. As a matter of fact, concussions occur at a rate of 1.6 to 3.8 million per year during sporting activities (Broglio). However, these figures fall short as there are many concussion injuries, which are unreported by either athletes or coaches and often
Head injuries are on the rise for athletes at all levels of play. Reports show that the number of children seeking emergency medical care for sports concussions incurred while playing competitive athletics has more than doubled. In 2015, 11 high school football players died from head related injuries. According to “The game’s tragic toll” written by Kalyn Kahler and Dan Greene eight deaths happened in game during regular play and 3 deaths happened outside of game time. Eleven deaths may not seem like a lot in a year but numbers start to add up though years. This is enough information to definitely prove that it is a bad idea to still play these sports. Is it really worth it to risk your life over something that otherwise would only take up about fifteen percent of your life otherwise? Unlikely, yet these sports are still played every single day. The medical effects have recently caught media attention appearing on fox news and has spread rapidly. Nobody is saying anything good about them which is what needs to happen in order to protect people from being hurt. Many athletes receive concussions then still return to the sport again! A “second impact syndrome” is a situation in which an individual sustains a second concussion previous to full recovery according to “concussion / mild tbi”. A second brain injury, or cumulative concussions can be more dangerous than the original. A concussion victim, Anne Frank says
