Encouraging Creativity Servant leaders encourage the members of their team to show creativity by creating a safe work environment. Hallowell (2011) noted when team members know they can risk failure without the threat of repercussion, they are free to engage deeply and dream big ideas for growth and change. An effective way for leaders to engage their employees in creative thought is to lead them through the “Cycle of Excellence” (Hallowell, 2011). The “Cycle of Excellence” (Hallowell, 2011) has five steps that allow employees to bring peak performance to their jobs. “Creativity, innovation, and ingenuity are essential to solving many of the challenges facing the world today” (Daniels & Peters, 2013, p. 4). When employees are relaxed and happy, they can engage in creative activities that will enhance the overall productivity of the workplace. One of the best ways to encourage employees to continue to grow is to recognize their efforts and accomplishments. “Recognition – validation and praise of what’s positive – is one of the key ingredients in helping people to shine” (Hallowell, 2011, p. 161). It is important to recognize people’s efforts, as well as, their accomplishments in order to encourage employees to have a growth mindset. “People with a growth mindset believe that failure is changeable and success can be cultivated through one’s efforts” (Nass & Yen, 2012, p. 39).
