Disobedience is a virtue When disobedience occurs, society feels threatened, but only a few have the heart and courage to encourage it. Oscar Wilde’s claim is that “disobedience is a valuable human trait and that it promotes social progress.” Wilde is right because disobedience can improve a situation or help with social issues. Throughout the history of the United States, many rebellions have occurred. Shay’s rebellion was led by Captain Daniel Shays and many other farmers. This rebellion took place in Massachusetts and lasted a half year. Shay’s rebellion was caused by debt, after the American Revolution the United States found themselves lacking money and with a massive amount of debt. On August 14, 2016 Kaepernick decided not to stand for the national anthem before the game and went unnoticed. Social media bashed him, but he didn’t take it to heart he spoke to social media and stated "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color." The next week he did it again this time with a teammate, the hate on him continued but he wouldn’t stop. Later he was joined by athletes around the world. Megan Rapinoe, Arian Foster, Kenny Stills to name a few all joined the movement that is known as “black lives matter”. Holding your hand over your heart during the national anthem is considered a civic duty of every single American. Kaepernick and the rest of the athletes that joined him showed a great amount of courage, they disobeyed for the greater cause and impacted society in a good way. In conclusion, disobeying can be for the greater good and to establish something better. No matter what year it is disobeying something will be heard and if it’s better for society we will listen and attempt to improve the situation; therefore speaking up vocally and physically can have a tremendous impact on
The author exemplifies the ways that disobedience helps the society and its contribution to furthering the human race but notes on the fact that blind obedience may eventually account for the end of civilization.
Human beings possess several virtues that differentiate them from other creatures and can use them in ways that represent their perceptions of social order. Surprisingly, Oscar Wilde believes that disobedience is an original virtue of every human and that it is responsible for progress and development. While Wilde’s claim is not entirely accurate, it is largely valid as evidenced by the recent events across the world, including the US, that have led to positive outcomes in spite of being termed and perceived as acts of disobedience.
This quote sparks interest due to disobedience often containing a negative connotation. However, in this quote disobedience is honorable, and to be called disobedient is a compliment. According to Wilde, disobedience is beneficial and without it social progress could not be made. Without disobedience, society is unable to change or improve from past mistakes. Without rebellion or disobedience, what will promote people to act on their injustices? Rebellion and disobedience are beneficial in promoting social progress. Through it, citizens are able to bring issues and injustices they want acknowledged to the forefront. Through these ways, they try to make the world a better place for everyone and to bring people to the realization as to why the issues that they face are at fault and that they should be restored.
Irish author, Oscar Wilde, claims that disobedience and rebellion are valuable human traits and promotes social progress. I agree with his Jr. because disobedience has gotten everybody places. Our history is made up of disobedience, all pivoting points are because of rebellions and disobedience. Disobedience is what allowed me and my friends of color to go to the same school as my white friends. Disobedience is what will allow me to vote in the next presidential election.
Throughout the history of the United States, plentiful of rebellions have occurred. In Massachusetts, Captain Daniel Shays led Shay’s rebellion with many other farmers. Dept ignited Shay’s rebellion; after the American Revolution the United States found themselves lacking money and with a massive amount of debt. Once the rebellion stopped leaders of the country gathered in what's known as the constitutional convention; they spoke on improving their problems of a weak central government. When it was all settled and done, the rebellion made the leaders of our nation rewrite the constitution improving our central government.
The United States Constitution grants citizens the right to peacefully protest and petition the government; however, some people believe that civil disobedience should be expunged from the list of rights people have. I believe this would go against the notion of the United States being the "home of the free", freedom is only freedom when there are no restrictions. Yes, civil disobedience does case complications between the people and the government, but wasn't the government made " for the people, but the people"? Do they not have the right to live under laws they approve of?
From the time we are children and throughout the duration of our lives, we are told to abide by certain sets of rules. In most situations this is a perfectly acceptable expectation; speed limits, remaining quiet in libraries, and waiting until the age of twenty-one to drink are all reasonable things to ask of people. After all, these rules and laws are put in place to ensure a peaceful and safe society. However, when these rules begin to infringe upon the rights of certain groups, some citizens turn to civil disobedience as a form of protest. While some may argue that civil disobedience is nothing more than a violation of the law, it has also proven to have a positive impact on society, in more ways than one. Used by Mahatma Gandhi and Martin
It goes without saying that there have been many problems which have plagued societies since the dawn of time. Many nations try to settle social issues with wars or unjust laws that devastate thousands. However, civil disobedience is a much more effective way to get people’s points across. Civil disobedience peacefully protests unjust laws and principles while accepting the consequences. As Henry David Thoreau stated, “Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty.” Great figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr embraced Thoreau’s words to make their societies better, and Americans today have used the principle as well. All show that peaceful resistance to unjust laws positively impact a free
Civil disobedience is one of our nation’s most important tools for change, and to promote a free society. Every new movement to change a law in our society can be seen as ‘un American’ or ‘radical’ at first, but even America’s free society was founded on seemingly ‘crazy’ ideas of revolution and fighting back against what was unjust. Since the Enlightenment, throughout history, people have sought change in order to make society equal for everyone, even in other countries for different reasons. Civil disobedience gets people’s attention, and forces the issue into the media spotlight, an effective way to get people to care about whatever change needs to take place. Even today, society is still moving towards change with civil disobedience, making the world better for everyone.
Civil disobedience is a way for individuals to come together in an attempt to make a change for the greater good. It’s a way for society to gradually progress peacefully. Without Martin Luther King Junior or Rosa Park’s act of civil disobedience, African Americans may still be enslaved. Without civil disobedience we would be complacent, if everyone followed along with the rules all of the time without any protest then no progress could be made. If people followed orders all of the time then we might end up in a situation like the Holocaust. The Germans obeyed Hitler’s every order which led to the wrongful death of millions of people.
Rebellion is a blessing to some humans or the downfalls to others with no neutral side to this topic. Oscar Wilde claims that a human trait that is common in many of us is disobedience. While disobedience is usually a heinous trait, it's not always the case. As Benjamin Franklin once stated, “Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God.” As a mortal, one has the liberty to disobey against tyrants who we believe are in the wrong as well as fighting for our freedom.
In my experience and opinion civil disobedience has positive and very important effect on our laws. Without civil disobedience and protest a free society isn't really free. Throughout history civil disobedience has overturned unjust laws, changed the way we see civil rights and has started both national and international conversations that have changed the course of history.
Civil disobedience has been an act throughout history making a change to further advance life. From the times of King Nebuchadnezzar to the recent leaks of Edward Snowden, it displays the consequences of civil disobedience. Even though civil disobedience can sometimes lead to negative consequences, the favorable desire of a better life is reached.
Throughout history there have been many rebellions against injustice and inequality that will later have an impact in the future because of the progress they produced. Through disobedience, man conveys dignity and high moral standards. With this unique human characteristic, stepping stones to a better future will be walked on.
Rules are meant to be broken. Is this true? For Thoreau, Gandhi, and King, it is true, for they all had reasons to break the rules and laws of the government. Each speaker kindled a movement that resisted injustice, and sparked change forever, through the use of logos, ethos, and pathos, the most powerful persuasive techniques. These three techniques are called the rhetorical triangle because they work so well together. Logic, ethics, and emotions are all accounted for when these devices are used correctly, which is evident in each author’s speech to push change in society through peaceful resistance. Thoreau, Gandhi, and King, speakers from different times, enforce the belief that civil disobedience is a valuable trait to promote social progress through uniting their audiences and revealing the injustices that need to be fixed.
