If the purpose of school is to learn, why do we censor educational material? By removing parts of our history, knowledge, or real world experiences, students receive a distorted perception of educational subjects. The fact that society is trying to keep children pure for as long as possible is destroying advancement within society since that information supports not only academic knowledge, but knowledge regarding everyday life as well. Hiding the truth does not stop the tragic and graphic situations that occur everyday. I completely understand the necessity of basic rules regarding general disorder, however I do not think it is essential to prevent critical thinking as children transition into the real world. How are children supposed to be expected to understand independence, and how to think for themselves if their entire lives were filtered and spoon fed to them? Avoidance and censorship within schools promotes ignorance. For example, restrainment of teaching about the history of slavery in America, result in children to grow without understanding the struggle of acceptance that people of color face, or the significance of rallies and marches for black rights in current society. Or the watered down sex education prevents practically any knowledge that would be useful in modern day life. Currently, majority of what is taught in sex education is abstinence. Although beneficial knowledge, it is unrealistic to expect every child to follow that recommendation; especially
Education seems to be the only socially acceptable way to lower the world’s endlessly growing population. Other methods, such as financial incentives, have been debated but without any real seriousness to come up with working programs that won’t take advantage of people. Although it is important to see that these methods as opportunities to educate are becoming harder to come by. Education is only obtainable in places where there is some level of affluence and an established governmental foundation proficient of enforcing such a program. Ironically, the regions that are meant to be targeted are usually in a state that is inaccessible, impoverished, and economically fragile. So, since education is limited, and can only reach so far, other methods must be taken into consideration. An individual example of this would be to tax families that have more than two children. A business example would be to receive incentives such as tax cuts for installing solar panels on buildings.
First, before I start I would like to say, many of these ideas and examples are from a video made by a man named Dave who did a similar project to this. I watched a video about how many schools and school systems are teaching things that don't need to be taught, and I started to question if some of the things we are learning in school are really necessary. With a job like an accountant or someone in a doctor's office, when will we ever have to use information about Andrew Carnegie? There are many things we are learning in school that we will most likely not need to know for a future career. There are many things we could learn instead of those things that could actually be useful for a job a student might want. I think it's just a waste of time to learn them and all these things are simply useless information. Sure it depends on what field you want to go into for example if you want to be a math teacher you will probably have to learn this stuff but we could still learn things that don't involve what job we have. For example, instead of reading a bunch of Edgar Allen Poe and his writing we could be learning how to get a job or how to vote. Why did we dissect frogs last year? Was it really useful to us? Did we learn anything that we will actually need in the real world? Personally, I don't think so. Just think of how much time you were in school learning things that you never used or never will use. Now imagine what else you could have done with all of that wasted time. With
Today’s education systems are deeply flawed. Schools attempt to conform the way students think, which then limits creativity and student’s ability to think for themselves. Schools are falling away from the true focus of education by replacing effective teaching with irrelevant assignments, only to overwork and severely stress the students. Since many students are focusing more on homework than real-life, they are losing precious time to explore passions and learn important life lessons. Schools today are not preparing students to be lifelong learners and successful participants in the real world at an adequate level.
Throughout my educational years, I have always had a competitive mindset due to soccer which I believe has played a role in my struggles with literacy. I always had to be the first person in my class to finish my assignments. Whether it was a test, a quiz, or just a daily assignment, I was always the first to finish. By doing this, it caused me to rush through my assignments and not give the time and effort needed to do it right or even figure out if I really liked a book or story. This was most prevalent in my english classes. English was never my strongest subject. I found that I had not been particularly passionate about reading or writing, so the papers I produced were never at their full potential. I would rush through those assignments even faster, making sure I would not have to endure the pain of reading and writing for any longer time than I had to. I would much rather have been outside playing soccer with my teammates.
Experience and Education Empowering To be empowered is to be more confident in, and more aware of oneself. To be empowered is to have a more complete understanding of what one must accomplish in order to live more fully. It is to grow in self-knowledge. It is to grow in self-awareness.
“ Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid” ( Einstein). Grading students based on subjects that they struggle in is like judging a fish based on its ability to climb a tree: completely unfair. The American school system has turned a blind eye to the millions of different personalities and talents that a student body has to offer. Since the establishment of the American high school, students have been forced to be scheduled in courses that they are not only struggling in, but are also forced to take classes that they find entirely uninteresting. The American high school has failed many students who are not academically inclined, and in order to establish success for everyone, the education system must be reconstructed to include hands on experiences and functional skill instruction.
The essence of being well educated is foremost the biggest issue in this world today in order to succeed as much as you can in society. “The difficulty understanding societal issues lowers the level of community involvement and civic participation” (Green, & Riddell, 2007). In a household worrying about the economic adversity is big when it comes to one being illiterate, particularly when that person is the main supplier. One cause is generational spread of literacy. What this is saying is, “Children have a higher chance of being illiterate if brought up in a household of parents who are as well illiterate.” These families usually don’t have a greater supply of materials in the home related to school, because it isn’t something important to the family. These are the parents who feel that their children can make it just the same way as they did without the proper education. Parents cannot educate the children, due to not knowing what to teach them because they didn’t get any schooling. Maybe these same people didn’t get any teaching from their own parents. Being in the education field myself, I know that we as parents should be our child’s first teacher. Growing up with parents who are educated, shows children how to succeed in this world. In the classroom, teachers lack the training to effectively teach a foster child. To be able to promote educational stability for the child, it is paramount that the teacher is in communication with the foster parents. In an article by National Center Brief, the authors list the appropriate responsibilities of a teacher when caring for a foster child (7,8). The list includes having monthly meetings with the child’s foster parents, caseworkers, and principal to catch each other up on how the child is doing and how they can better plan the child’s educational future. One of the ways teachers can better aid children in the foster care system is by looking at their educational assessment prior to being in foster care.
Throughout the last 50 decades or so, the world has advanced beyond our imaginations. With new technology being created every day, our minds never cease to disappoint us. However, although we have advanced in our industry, the school system in many developed countries have stayed static. The education systems we currently have were built with the intention of being useful during the industrial age. For a few countries, that stretches as far back as the 18th century. Yes, there have been small alterations made throughout the years but the principal idea of our education system has not changed for a mere 200 years. So, what is that goal exactly? To produce future factory workers.
The education system has been established in order for all members of the communities to receive a fair and equal education opportunity. However, there are many variables that take place and all students receive the same opportunities. The students who live in poor areas tend to struggle more in school because it carries on to the school grounds. Those schools seem to have more difficulty keeping students engaged and on track. For some reason, the students at a low performing school are usually minorities and the school environment is not considered a place for them to thrive. Many teachers may find it difficult to teach in those schools because there is a lot of chaos at times. Therefore, keeping competent teachers is not always possible and that negatively affects the students education as well. Trying to close the gap between low performing schools and those that do well is not an easy task. The effort of school administrators to bring programs to help low performing schools and educating those families who’s children are affected is important because it can help enhance their opportunity to succeed educationally.
What is the goal of the United States’ K-12 education system in the 21st century? While it may be worded in a variety of ways, it is well known that the main goal is essentially to equip our students with the skills necessary to succeed on their own after K-12 education. However, many of today’s high school graduates are not experiencing the achievement of this goal. In order for success after K-12 education to happen the students must possess the intrinsic motivation for overcoming obstacles, and the confidence in their ability to do so. With much of education involving a right and wrong answer it is easy for students to feel like they can either succeed or fail. In contrast, education through the arts with a design thinking approach allows students to have a learning experience where the best solution to a problem is not given to them, but rather found by them throughout the design process. This process gives students the opportunity to learn from their mistakes, gain confidence in their ideas, and develop a motivation that comes from within. Thus, through design thinking pedagogy and the integration of the arts with other disciplines, as seen in STEAM curriculums, educators are able to facilitate this type of learning experience and therefore better equip students with the tools for success.
Ever since I can remember I’ve never been the best test taker. The subject I’ve struggled the most in for all of my life has been math. In junior high, especially seventh grade I didn’t have the greatest teacher in the world. That was definitely the year I had the most trouble, so when high school came around and our test scores were the deciding factor on whether we graduate or not I knew I had a lot of work to do.
There is no doubt that elementary school plays a big role in a child’s education. But how does that differ from students of different socioeconomic status? “Middle-class children gain advantages, including potential benefits in the world of work, from the experience of concerted cultivation” (Lareau 1). the lower class starts their academic career unequally compared to middle and upper class. Teachers need to realize that the student plays a role in their education as they do, students are not just passive recipients of knowledge. Whether its help-seeking or after school programs that don’t work, lower-class students in elementary school start their education off with unequal footing. School programs try to fix some of these inequalities
In a democratic education system, there is a balance of authority between the state, the parents, the individual, and the educators. While each group has their own claim to power over the education of children, there is still the question of who should have the most. This question often comes down to the state or the parents because they are the most complicated and influential. The primary goal of democratic education is to equip children with the knowledge and moral character needed to find success and contentment in life and society. Therefore, when education focuses on this goal, the state should have more power than the parents. The state must have more authority over education because they will equip children with the skills needed
Philosophers dating back to Socrates have grappled with what is critical thinking, Socrates questioned the importance of looking for evidence by close examination and reasoning. Basic concepts of analysing making assumptions and its implications of what is said and what is done. St Thomas Aquinas a theologian during the Middle Ages in the Sumna Theologica wrote about heightening awareness and the power of reasoning that we have a need for reasoned thought that knowledge was given by God. In the 17th and 18th Century brought about revolution thinking and thinkers like Sir Isaac Newton which enforced earlier thinkers of gathering evidence for sound reasoning thought.
