The Importance Of Education

Decent Essays

I believe school is exceedingly important. In Mark Mathabane’s story Kaffir Boy it states, “I want you to go to school, because I believe that an education is the key you need to open up a new world and a new life for yourself, a world and life different from that of either your father’s or mine,” (78). This quotation is important to me because, I believe an education is key and you can change your whole life by having an education. An education will help you learn necessary skills for life. I am reluctant in everything I pursue. Another fear I have, is being judged by other people. I always check twice about what I do. In Mathabane’s story Kaffir Boy it states, “ A more compelling argument for going to school, however, was the vivid recollection of all that humiliation and pain my mother had gone though to get me the papers and the birth certificate so I could enroll in school,” (75). Women were also considered to be below men, now women are making their way up to be equal. Women were also considered property, now women have rights, and they don’t have to be slaves to their husbands. In Mark Mathabane’s story his father is involved in the old thinking. He thinks women are property, should not work, and women do not need school. Mathabane’s mother is involved with the new way of thinking. She thinks women have rights, education is good and will open up doors for a new life, and that women can work. Old thinking can effect girls a lot in pursuing a career or having a family.
